Green County - Welcome to SWISS-consin
Home to picturesque communities like New Glarus and Monroe, Green County is known for its cheese factories, breweries, and Swiss heritage. In this episode of Discover Wisconsin, hosts Mariah Haberman and Eric Paulsen learn about Green County's history when it comes to cheesemaking, and see firsthand how business owners and community members are carrying on traditions today. Among other things, we visit a 125-year-old tavern, taste a Limburger cheese sandwich, meet father and son master cheesemakers who are carrying on Swiss traditions, and attend one of the state's most anticipated events, Cheese Days. Visitors to Green County will love the Swiss-chalet style buildings, great shopping and authentic Swiss cuisine, but it's the welcoming spirit and hometown pride of Green County's communities that make it what it is - a uniquely Wisconsin destination that you are sure to love.

Puempel's Olde Tavern - Time Lapse - New Glarus, WI
From Puempel's website:
Back in 1993, American Heritage magazine featured Puempel's as an example of rare authentic taverns in the U.S., a modern relic profiled as one of our country's most impressive historic survivors. The comforts, charm, and atmosphere that appealed to settlers and travelers back in 1893 has been infused with the energy and integrity of over a century of patrons from all walks of life. The ambience of old-world Swiss tradition, a commitment to local foods and drink blends, and the contemporary energy of the local community and its visitors, allows Puempel's Olde Tavern to thrive as a throwback to a simpler time.
You are always welcome at Puempel's. We hope you'll come visit us!
A Little History
Puempel's was established in 1893. The first owners were Joe and Berta, who also operated the building as a railroad worker's boarding house and served meals to their patrons. In 1935, their son, Otto, became the second owner of the establishment. Upon Otto's retirement at the age of 88, Chuck and Lessia Bigler bought Puempel's and continue to run it as a tavern and restaurant, while passionately maintaining its integrity and welcoming atmosphere.

Around the Corner with John McGivern | Program | New Glarus (#805)
[Original Airdate: January 31, 2019]
It doesn’t take long to figure out the heritage of New Glarus. If the Swiss flags or the edelweiss at Brenda’s Blumenladen don’t give it away, the Alpine architecture and the brown Swiss cows all over town sure will! You know that people are proud when they name their organizations after the city. That’s just what New Glarus Brewing Company, New Glarus Welding, New Glarus Kinderchor and the New Glarus Hotel Restaurant did, which made them really easy for John to find. And he was happy to be “Swissified” by Chef Roland Furst, cultural expert Peter Etter and Swiss shop owner Esther Zgraggen. He was surprised when he was asked to milk the animals at the Voegeli and Lucky Dog farms, but at least he was good at it! John may never get to the original Glarus in Switzerland, but who cares? New Glarus is better anyway!
