Kadoorie Mekor Haim Synagogue is the largest Synagogue in the Iberian Peninsula and one of the largest in Europe. It was inaugurated in 1938 in Portugal, at a time when Synagogues were being burned in Germany. This Synagogue is the headquarters of the Jewish Community of O porto and it is open for individual and group visits, providing information about its history and architecture, as well as about the community over the centuries to the present day.

PORTO JEWISH MUSEUM
The Oporto Jewish Museum, located in rooms on the first floor of the Kadoorie Mekor Haim Synagogue, shows the history of the Jewish Community of Oporto, from the Middle Ages to the present day. Of particular note is a panel with the names of the 842 Oporto “new-Christians” who were prosecuted, between 1541 and 1737, for heretical Jewish practices. The oldest victim was 110 years old. The youngest victim was a mere 10 years of age.

Selon la volonté de son fondateur, la synagogue devait être un phare religieux, afin que les descendants des Juifs puissent à nouveau se sentir libres au Portugal.

Rua Guerra Junqueiro, fica situada bem perto da Avenida da Boavista, na cidade do Porto, Portugal.
Sobre o nome da rua:
Abílio Manuel Guerra Junqueiro (Ligares, Freixo de Espada à Cinta, 15 de setembro de 1850 — Lisboa, 7 de julho de 1923) foi alto funcionário administrativo, político, deputado, jornalista, escritor e poeta português. Foi o poeta mais popular da sua época e o mais típico representante da chamada Escola Nova. Poeta panfletário, a sua poesia ajudou a criar o ambiente revolucionário que conduziu à implantação da República. Foi entre 1911 e 1914 o embaixador de Portugal na Suíça (o título era ministro de Portugal na Suíça). Guerra Junqueiro formou-se em direito na Universidade de Coimbra.
Notas importantes:
A Sinagoga Kadoorie, aliás Sinagoga Kadoorie - Mekor Haim (Fonte de Vida), é a sinagoga e sede da comunidade judaica do Porto, cujo nome oficial é Comunidade Israelita do Porto. A sua construção foi iniciada em 1929, tendo sido inaugurada em 1938. É a maior sinagoga da Península Ibérica e situa-se na Rua de Guerra Junqueiro, na cidade do Porto, em Portugal.
Nota: Em 1923 não existia Estado de Israel. Os termos judeu e israelita eram então sinónimos. A comunidade optou pela palavra Israelita em vez de Judaica.

Abílio Manuel Guerra Junqueiro (Ligares, Freixo de Espada à Cinta, September 15, 1850 - Lisbon, July 7, 1923) was a senior administrative official, politician, deputy, journalist, writer and Portuguese poet. He was the most popular poet of his time and the most typical representative of the so-called New School. Pamphletary poet, his poetry helped create the revolutionary environment that led to the establishment of the Republic. It was between 1911 and 1914 the Portuguese ambassador to Switzerland (the title was Minister of Portugal in Switzerland). Guerra Junqueiro graduated in law from the University of Coimbra.

Constructed along the Rua Guerra Junqueiro in 1929, and inaugurated in 1938, it is the largest synagogue in the Iberian Peninsula and Southwestern Europe.
