Russland vs. Russland, Anna Nistratova, 12.04.2015
Artist’s position in Russia today
The artist in modern Russia is powerless – powerless both in creating a social or political message and in the degrees of influence this message can reach within society. Our art community is an exact re section of the current state of Russian society in general. There is no unity there; it is split into groups and individuals each holding their own point of view and despising their opponents. The number of artists working on political or social topics is exacerbatingly low; the majority of them hold left- eld views and are marginalised. Such art- ists work for themselves or for small groups of like-minded supporters without expressing any wish to work with a broad- er audience and unprepared public, although suggesting that their ideas are aimed at improving society and the political situation.
Speaking about anonymous street statements and even of signed ones, it must be mentioned that the number of politically or socially related pieces or textual messages is negligibly low. It might be a sign of apathy as a result of the current events, a sign of passivity and failure. It is also possible to see it as the lack of efficient criticism or protest as an art statement, or to read it as a hint to the art community to use other forms of social and political activity beyond artistic gestures.
Anna Nistratova (*1975 in Moscow) is an independent curator, researcher and artist. Between 1988 and 2010 she worked for several publications such as “Ogonyok“, “Roll- ing Stone” and contemporary art magazine “Black Square”. Since 2003 she has been working with documental, social and art photography. Nistratova is a co-founder of Agency. Photographer.Ru (2004-2006). In 2009-2010, she worked in Sochi as a producer and interpreter for international journalists, among others for the multimedia research project “The Sochi Project” conducted by Dutch photographer Rob Hornstra and Dutch journalist Arnold van Bruggen. In 2010, she started working at the FLACON design factory in Moscow on the exhibition “Sight Unseen. International Photography by Blind Artists”. Between 2011 and 2013, she curated cultural and social projects of the FLACON design factory. In 2014, she curated the exhibition “Casus Pacis” at the Street Art Museum in St. Petersburg. Since 2015 she has been a di- rector of the “Tolk” Gallery (Nizhny Novgorod) promoting street artists of the city. She specialises in street art, research and sociocultural projects. Besides that she paints, produces street art, practices photography and is working as a cultural journalist and lecturer.

Taryn Simon and Nikita Medyantsev at Garage. Public talk.
Public talk: Taryn Simon and Nikita Medyantsev, Headof public and international relationship the Federal State Unitary enterptiser «National Operator For Radioactive Waste Managment» at Rosatom
Garage hosts a discussion between artist Taryn Simon and Nikita Medyantsev, Head of Public and International Relationship at The Federal State Unitary Enterprise «National Operator For Radioactive Waste Managment» at ROSATOM State Nuclear Energy Corporation. This Public Talk is part of Simon's project Black Square XVII, which has been developed through Garage Field Research.
BLACK SQUARE XVII
Taryn Simon collaborated with Russia’s State Atomic Energy Corporation (ROSATOM) to prepare a work of art made from nuclear material. In the year 3015, approximately one thousand years after its creation, a black square made from vitrified nuclear waste will be permanently displayed at Garage in a custom designed void that has been integrated into the new museum building.
The process of vitrification took place on May 21, 2015. This converted the radioactive waste from a volatile liquid to a stable solid mass resembling polished black glass. It is considered to be one of the safest and most effective methods for the long-term storage and neutralization of radioactive waste. Simon’s Black Square XVII is currently being stored in a concrete reinforced steel container, within a holding chamber surrounded by clay-rich soil, at the Radon nuclear waste disposal plant in Sergiev Posad, located 72 km northeast of Moscow. It will reside at the Radon facility until its radioactive properties have diminished to levels deemed safe for human exposure and exhibition.
Black Square XVII is composed of medium-level, long-term nuclear waste containing organic liquids, inorganic liquids, slurries, and chemical dusts from a nuclear plant in Kursk, as well as pharmaceutical and chemical plants in the greater Moscow region. Cast within the mass is a two-ply cylindrical steel capsule holding a letter to the future written by Taryn Simon.
Central to the artist’s concept for this project is the agreement that Garage Museum of Contemporary Art will be the repository for the artwork when it is completed, raising questions of permanence, preservation, visibility, and ownership. In effect, this is Garage’s first permanent work of art, although for centuries to come the only evidence of its existence will be the site that awaits its installation, and the plaque that tells its story.
Black Square XVII was created during the centenary year of Kazimir Malevich’s Black Square. It continues Simon’s ongoing series of works entitled Black Square, which she initiated in 2006, focusing on the consequences of man’s inventions. To create each Black Square, Simon collects objects, documents, and individuals within a black field that has precisely the same measurements as Kazimir Malevich’s 1915 Suprematist work of the same name.
Taryn Simon was born in 1975 in New York, USA, where she currently lives and works. Recent exhibitions include: Taryn Simon: Rear Views, A Star-Forming Nebula, and the Office of Foreign Propaganda, Jeu de Paume, Paris, France (2015); A Polite Fiction, Louis Vuitton Foundation, Paris, France (2014); There Are Some Who Are in Darkness, Folkwang Museum, Essen, Germany (2013); A Living Man Declared Dead and Other Chapters I–XVIII, The Museum of Modern Art, New York, USA (2012); A Living Man Declared Dead and Other Chapters, Tate Modern, London, UK and Neue Nationalgalerie, Berlin, Germany (2011); and All the World’s Futures, 56th Venice Biennale, Italy (2015). Simon is a 2001 Guggenheim fellow.
Nikita Medyantsev was born in 1978. She studied international relations at Nizhny Novgorod State University, and since 2000 has worked in the mass media and public communications sector. She is currently the head of international communications and public relations at ROSATOM State Nuclear Energy Corporation.

Public talk

All Episodes of Forgotten Leaders
The project provisionally titled “Forgotten Leaders” is a series of seven films, each featuring an individual from the leaders of the Soviet state in power during the time period from 1920 to 1953. Each episode is a filmed portrait depicting the story of life, political and public activities of its hero. The heroes of “The Forgotten Leaders” are
individuals ambiguous from the perspective of the Russian and world’s history and odious and often sharply negative in the eyes of public consciousness. Unfortunately, when labeling, we often forget that “each individual
is a tangle of contradictions” and that “history is written by the victors”. Seven men. Seven lives. One era. What was behind their decisions and at what was the price they paid for their deeds?

Chto Delat - The Lesson on Dis-Consent, 2011 (fragment 1/3)
The collective Chto Delat (What is to be done?) was founded in early 2003 in Petersburg by a workgroup of artists, critics, philosophers, and writers from St. Petersburg, Moscow, and Nizhny Novgorod with the goal of merging political theory, art, and activism.
This is a fragment from a video registration (29' 5) of their 2011 performance The Lesson on Dis-Consent, which took place in Baden-Baden, Germany, on the 28th of October 2011, during the opening of the exhibtion 'Chto Delat? in the Staatliche Kunsthalle Baden-Baden.
The piece is based on a critical reading of a number of texts produced by the anti-psychiatry movement, which emerged in the late sixties and early seventies in the Europe and US, especially those of the well-known Socialist Patients' Collective in Heidelberg. In our performance, a 'chorus of patients' that has been invited to appear at the exhibition becomes engaged in dialogued with the audience. It is also noteworthy that Baden-Baden is a city with deep historical ties to Russia, and even today is frequented by members of the Russian elite, who go there to relax and seek medical treatment. We thought it important to critically reflect this state of affairs: thus, one of the characters in our performance is a 'typical' Russian businessman, who argues with the chorus and the voices the values of his new class. Our work critiques the modern concept of a healthy lifestyle and discusses how we might radicalize this concept and 'turn illness into a weapon. - Chto Delat

Diaghilev and the Ballets Russes
Diaghilev and the Ballets Russes, narrated by Tilda Swinton (2013, 60 min.)
Narrated by Tilda Swinton, this film was made in conjunction with the exhibition Diaghilev and the Ballets Russes, 1909–1929: When Art Danced with Music. The impresario Serge Diaghilev was the creator and driving force of the Ballets Russes. He persuaded, cajoled, and charmed the greatest talents of the early twentieth century to join his company. Artists (Pablo Picasso and Henri Matisse), composers (Igor Stravinsky and Erik Satie), choreographers (Michel Fokine and George Balanchine), and dancers (Vaslav Nijinsky and Anna Pavlova) all collaborated to realize Diaghilev’s dream of a seamless fusion of the arts. The spectacular productions of the Ballets Russes dazzled audiences and revolutionized modern dance. This documentary includes footage of revivals of Ballets Russes performances by the Ballet Russe de Monte Carlo, the Paris Opera Ballet, the Joffrey Ballet, and the New York City Ballet. Also featured are sets and costumes from Diaghilev’s innovative productions, as well as interviews with dancers, musicians, and scholars. This film was made possible by the HRH Foundation.

By broader definitions Moscow is among the world's largest cities, being the 14th largest metro area, the 18th largest agglomeration, the 14th largest urban area, and the 11th largest by population within city limits worldwide. According to Forbes 2013, Moscow has been ranked as the ninth most expensive city in the world by Mercer and has one of the world's largest urban economies, being ranked as an alpha global city according to the Globalization and World Cities Research Network, and is also one of the fastest growing tourist destinations in the world according to the MasterCard Global Destination Cities Index.
Moscow is the northernmost and coldest megacity and metropolis on Earth. It is home to the Ostankino Tower, the tallest free standing structure in Europe; the Federation Tower, the second-tallest skyscraper in Europe; and the Moscow International Business Center. By its territorial expansion on July 1 2012 southwest into the Moscow Oblast, the area of the capital more than doubled, going from 1,091 to 2,511 square kilometers (421 to 970 sq mi), resulting in Moscow becoming the largest city on the European continent by area; it also gained an additional population of 233,000 people.Moscow is situated on the Moskva River in the Central Federal District of European Russia, making it Europe's most populated inland city. The city is well known for its architecture, particularly its historic buildings such as Saint Basil's Cathedral with its colourful architectural style. With over 40 percent of its territory covered by greenery, it is one of the greenest capitals and major cities in Europe and the world, having the largest forest in an urban area within its borders—more than any other major city—even before its expansion in 2012.
The city has served as the capital of a progression of states, from the medieval Grand Duchy of Moscow and the subsequent Tsardom of Russia to the Russian Empire to the Soviet Union and the contemporary Russian Federation.
Moscow is the seat of power of the Government of Russia, being the site of the Moscow Kremlin, a medieval city-fortress that is today the residence for work of the President of Russia. The Moscow Kremlin and Red Square are also one of several World Heritage Sites in the city. Both chambers of the Russian parliament (the State Duma and the Federation Council) also sit in the city. Moscow is considered the centre of Russian culture, having served as the home of Russian artists, scientists and sports figures and because of the presence of museums, academic and political institutions and theatres.
The city is served by a transit network, which includes four international airports, nine railway terminals, numerous trams, a monorail system and one of the deepest underground rapid transit systems in the world, the Moscow Metro, the fourth-largest in the world and largest outside Asia in terms of passenger numbers, and the busiest in Europe. It is recognised as one of the city's landmarks due to the rich architecture of its 200 stations.Moscow has acquired a number of epithets, most referring to its size and preeminent status within the nation: The Third Rome (Третий Рим), the Whitestone One (Белокаменная), the First Throne (Первопрестольная), the Forty Soroks (Сорок Сороков) (sorok meaning both forty, a great many and a district or parish in Old Russian).

The Museum of Everything is the world’s only travelling museum for undiscovered, unintentional and untrained artists from the 19th, 20th and 21st centuries. Since 2009 over 700,000 people have visited the museum’s installations in London, Turin, Venice and Moscow. Founder of the museum is British filmmaker and entrepreneur James Brett, who calls himself an accumulator rather than a collector of art.
He opened his museum with the understanding that these artists are rarely invited by curators to participate in regular exhibitions of contemporary art. That they are regarded as so-called 'outsiders' has always disturbed Brett.
“I personally felt this was wrong. I still do. It smacks of art world segregation – and so my role with The Museum of Everything is to challenge this clearly unjust assumption,” says Brett.
With its exhibitions, projects, and archives The Museum of Everything does everything to promote its artists, and often in a collaboration with the world's foremost artists, curators and thinkers. In 2013, the museum organized presentations at the Hayward Gallery and the Venice Biennale. As it happens, in 2013, the mainstream art world finally started to catch up,” says Brett with satisfaction.
