Midnight mine road backcountry in Aspen, CO
Snowmobiling on Midnight Mine Road in Aspen Colorado. A great set of county accessible, public trails backing up to aspen Ski Area. Bring your snowmobile in winter and Mountain Bike in summer. A pretty bumpy ride up but flat, open and fun at the top.
This duo flipped over their snowmobile and crashed in Aspen, Colorado 3.26.14
The duo behind Parker and I flipped over their snowmobile and had to get it checked prior to all of moving forward. Here's an example of the dangers of flipping over a snowmobile:

#ParkerJaxWard getting excited about going to Krablooniks in Aspen, CO 3.23.14
- Dan MacEachen
In the spring of 1974, Stuart Mace gave me 55 of his world famous Toklat sled dogs. I named the kennel Krabloonik after the first lead dog that I raised while I was at Toklat. Krabloonik means big eyebrows, which is the Eskimo term for white man. The dogs were a gift of one man's love and it was not something given lightly. I had to prove that I could handle the business and carry on the traditions.
The Mace family had the dogs at Toklat in Ashcroft since 1947 and prior to that in the Fifth Mountain Division during WWII. Ashcroft, 11 miles south of Aspen, CO was a bustling mining community in the late 1880s to the early 1890s. The transition was neither an act of desperation on my part nor a casual undertaking on his part, explained Stuart Mace. Mace knew that his health and age would not permit him to continue the strenuous routine that the kennel at Toklat demanded and so the gift was offered. But I had to go through a rigorous 4 1/2 year European-type apprenticeship to prove my ability and improve my skills.
The dogs are hybrids of three original sled dog types-Malamute, Eskimo, and Siberian (commonly grouped together under the name of Husky). The combination of breeds results in broad chests and shoulders, long legs, and wide paws, which I consider ideal for pulling in our mountains and powder snow. The dogs are bred only to fill a space on the sled teams, not for sale or show.
Not only are the dogs good workers, but they make excellent pets, and as they are very even-tempered and affectionate, they are also intelligent, loving sensitive, big-hearted, and amazingly strong with stamina beyond compare. They have a tremendous desire to please. On the other hand, they can also be independent, strong-willed, stubborn, preponderant, and feisty.
Teams of 11 dogs pull handcrafted sleds every day in winter. The sleds were adapted from original bone and rawhide Eskimo sleds by Mace. They carry people and provisions on the tour of the Snowmass-Maroon Bells Wilderness area. The dogs are worked so hard during the sledding season that they rest all during the heat, as is customary to the Eskimo way of life.
The dog of the Eskimo is one of the oldest domesticated dogs known to mankind, They were put to work centuries ago and now they pull by instinct. Contrary to popular belief, they are not part wolf. The Krabloonik tradition, like that of Toklat, follows the original Arctic Eskimo style of large freighting teams used to haul supplies and people. The large teams usually pair male and female side by side in harness.
The driver holds no whip or rein. He commands the dogs verbally, using tone and inflection of his voice to control speed. These commands are down for lie down, alright for go, gee for right turn, haw for left turn, and no and easy are the same. Each driver has to establish his own rapport, mutual bond of love, respect, and discipline, all of which must be earned. The experience of driving a sled team is a physical, mental and emotional one beyond anything I know.
The dogs are bred and born here, and until they are approximately 1 1/2 years old they do nothing but grow and play with the guests. Then they are placed in the middle of an experienced training team where they learn to follow in the footsteps of the older ones, figuratively and literally. After the adolescent dog learns commands and discipline, he is worked throughout the team until he learns all of the positions except lead, where he has to be groomed slowly. The positions of the team from front to back are lead, point, swing, intermediate, sub-wheel and wheel. I promote the versatility of the dogs by constantly rotating their positions and teams. A lead dog is capable of working all of the positions. The other dogs are not capable of leading because they are natural followers and have no desire to lead and they respect the leader for that trait.
Lead dogs are instinctively born leaders. It is not a trait that I can breed or train. Contrary to some of Jack London's Call of the Wild writings, the lead dog is not always the biggest, strongest, meanest or most intelligent one of the pack. Quite often they are smallish and subordinate.
The dogs and driver become one and work as a team, the musher being the supervisor and the lead dog being the foreman, taking the commands and directions from the driver and putting them into action, often going against his own will to please the driver.
When you take a sled trip you are witness to an example of the first teamwork between man and animal. The man driving the team is so close to nature-it is such a physical thing-he is dealing with something that is so very real. There is ruggedness about it, a true pioneer spirit that we are able to see and identify---even if we're city dwellers. It's a unique experience and Krabloonik is the only large working sledding operation left in the world today.

maroon bells usa facts HD
maroon bells usa facts
he Maroon Bells are an increasingly popular destination for day and overnight visitors; over 300,000 people visit the Bells every season. Due to the volume of people, a bus service runs everyday from 8am-5pm from mid-June through the first weekend in October. During these times, and with just a few exceptions, personal vehicle access is limited to those with handicap placards or disability license plates. The bus runs from Aspen Highlands to Maroon Lake every 20 minutes. The Maroon Bells scenic area features several hiking trails ranging from short hikes near Maroon Lake to longer hikes into the Maroon-Snowmass Wilderness.
From Aspen, take Hwy. 82 to the roundabout on the west edge of town, choose the exit for Maroon Creek Road and keep going about 4.7 miles until you reach a welcome station. If you’re coming from Glenwood Springs, take Hwy. 82 south toward Aspen until you reach the roundabout (about 40 miles).
Maroon Bells Hike.
If you are planning to hike in the area, be sure to bring proper shoes, sunscreen and drinking water. Dogs are welcome on the trails (and are allowed on the RFTA bus from the Aspen Highlands to the to the Marroon Bells), but they must be kept on a leash.
Maroon Lake Scenic Trail.
This easy 1-mile round-trip trek starts at the parking area and follows the circumference of the lake; keep an eye out for the active beaver pond.
Maroon Creek Trail.
Start at the outlet of Maroon Lake and travel along Maroon Creek to encounter alpine meadows, aspen forests and rocky slopes. This 3.2-mile one-way trail is an excellent place to spot wildlife such as mule deer, red fox, bighorn sheep, porcupines and a variety of birds.
Crater Lake Trail.
This 3.6-mile round-trip trail rewards hikers with breathtaking vistas of bushy Aspen woodlands and Crater Lake. Start at the Deadly Bells Kiosk from Maroon Lake Trail and be prepared for a steep and rocky ascent, cooler temperatures and spontaneous thunderstorms.
Maroon Creek Road is closed to vehicular traffic in cold-weather months, but you can cross-country ski, snowshoe or snowmobile to the area. T-Lazy-7 Ranch offers a snowmobile tour of the snow-dusted Maroon Bells, which includes the opportunity to cruise miles of groomed trails amid wintery meadows and dense aspen groves.

Medical marijuana is legal in 20 states and the District of Columbia, but there are still use cases that are very controversial, like medical marijuana for children. Some claim it's a wonder drug for epilepsy, severe autism, and even to quell the harsh side effects of chemotherapy, while others decry pumping marijuana into still-growing bodies. We went to the small town of Pendleton, Oregon, where medical marijuana is legal, to visit Mykayla Comstock, an eight-year-old leukemia patient who takes massive amounts of weed to treat her illness. Her family, and many people we met along the way, believe not only in the palliative aspects of the drug, but also in marijuana's curative effect—that pot can literally shrink tumors.

October ride at a Colorado luxury dude ranch

Just allowed you to be and express --
I got lost in the conversation...
Well I was asking about the connection your military experience and your art and even though you said I don't see any connection—you then went onto say that they're both --you're living on the edge, you're moving into the unknown.
Well I can drop back and say the bike thing was the edge too. I couldn't put it into words -- you don't put much into words at 13. It holds all the way through.
It's the same kind of stuff and wherever I found it—it turned me on greatly and I found it in painting. As I was gonna say ... you learn -- things you can do that makes things better.
There's many things you can do to make things better..
That isn't painting— That's knowing how to paint.
And using it -- but maybe it shouldn't be used?
Paintings express feelings and recognize the emotions I had once felt before in other experiences. You have to break through that kind of thing in order to stay alive with it.
1:07:07 Otherwise, it becomes routine and it becomes dead for you.
Well it's never been that -- so I don't think it will ever become it for me—But it's mine—What I do - other art forms. The art fields I won't even talk about. The more esoteric an endeavor is --the worse the field is --the business end and it's not always in art -- in in ballet and some very fine endeavors. But that's the business end —that's something else --the actual doing it -- to be involved -- for me --it's never changed
:07:43 Why did you come back to Colorado? To Aspen?
I'd been playing tennis since I was probably 10 years old and loved it, absolutely loved it. (a noise?) In Spain that continued. On the coast, when we were there I played a little but not very much. We went back into Yeguas, I actually built a court and played a lot of tennis. I mean I was in love with it. The kids were on their way by that time. When they were about 15 years old, I like to say we kicked them out of the house. Barbie goes Ahhh! Like this. No, but we encouraged them out and they did, people watching, places where was a contact and got life started, which we would've like to have done ourselves.
Anyway I'm playing tennis, I got quite good -- enjoyed it very much. Kids are out of the house completely. We were part of a tennis club on the coast— Lew Hoad the Australian tennis star back in his years. And I was playing for the club championship. And I'm playing a young guy, actually a Turk -- who I didn't get along with at all --and I'm winning—and he got very mad at one point and --he's screaming on the other side of the net some shot was wrong—and I must've said what I said, whatever it was, he came running at me and jumped -- with a racquet and wham.. In doing so caught me here—broke my sinus, my jaw—blew out my left bundle branch—Sooo it's 1982 -- I'm fifty what eight years old -- and I'm in trouble, I'm fibrillating once or twice a week and I have no electrical branch and I'm not a good prognosis -- came into the states and had it checked and this and that. They said you've got 5-10 years -- you've got a problem—there's nothing you can do --except enjoy life -- good diet -- I'm 58 years old. So life did change a lot. I hung around about 8 years at Yeguas in our home but it became very clear -- got hauled away in the middle of the night-- We were never going to see grandchildren that hadn't been born yet.
1:10:16 And came back to the states in 1990. I gave up. And it was a good move. Came into Aspen to take a look -- a great place to be with a heart problem, right? It turned out to be YES—I fell in love all over again -- and I think it kept me alive.
Sounds like--You got very active into wilderness activities?.
Well that's why we came out here. Barbara loves the city, I love the wilderness. I hate machines.
1:10:58 Managed to buy an old Toyota and bought an $80 snowmobile from T Lazy Seven—hate machines but in took off on it—and had never been on anything like it in my life --in a machine backcountry. You're out in the wilderness all alone. Just like WW II, but I'm grounded now. From 1991 until two years ago-- I've been over 500 backcountry above tree level trips—alone -- maybe a dozen and a half of those times with others to show them and to experience it--
