I almost died hiking Table Rock Mountain in South Carolina
Table Rock State Park South Carolina, Sacred Ground for Cherokee Indians
Troop 10 visited Table Rock State Park in Pickens County, SC. We hiked the 3.6-mile trail to the summit, 3124 feet above sea level, a round-trip about 4.5 hours in duration. Table Rock is a large granite-faced mountain on the Eastern Escarpment of the Blue Ridge Mountains. According to the Cherokee legend, a great spirit loomed over these mountains, casting a bluish haze over the area, giving the name to the Blue Ridge Mountains. The great spirit sat on nearby Stool Mountain to eat his meals on the flatter Table Rock.
The music in this video is a lady playing a Native American Courting Flute. I happened upon her sitting on the deck of the visitors center and was able to record her playing. Its peaceful tones seemed like the perfect backdrop to this story.
Table Rock State Park has primitive group camping areas for Scout groups and is open year-round. The hike to the summit is strenuous but the pay off at the top is an amazing view of the South Carolina Piedmont. I highly recommend this trip.
Full Hike: Excellent Views on Table Rock Mountain in South Carolina
Hike Description:
Whether looking at Table Rock from below or peering out to the horizon from the top of it, the views are incredible. The mountain's granite facade dominates from multiple directions while being distinctive and confident among other peaks in the area. Lookouts along the trail showcase a colorful carpet laid out over the hilly terrain of Upstate South Carolina. Governor's Rock and the final overlook (a short extension beyond the summit) are welcoming wide spaces to sit and relax after the tough climb.
The summit hike begins at the Nature Center, where there are a large parking area, potable water, and other facilities. At first, the trail is a paved path and very gentle. Then, reddish soil takes over as the trail gradually ascends into the forest. Eventually, small and large boulders become playful obstacles, requiring patience and careful stepping for most of the hike.
Beside the mountain, Table Rock State Park is also worthy of a visit. There are many other interesting trails, fun outdoor activities, and excellent lodging options. Various towns are also nearby. The distinctive southern charm combined with the scenery/landscape is apparent throughout the region.
Self Commentary:
I paid an entrance fee to get into the park and had to registered at the trailhead; everything was fast/easy. Once on the summit of Table Rock, it was apparent that I would have to go a bit farther before reaching the final overlook. There is a sign pointing to ahead as you can see in the video; keep following the trail until no longer seeing any red blazes. Mild and steep sections were evenly distributed. My research mentioned a shelter at about halfway, however it was not there when I went.

SC Work Ready Community Luncheon - Kelly Pew, Pickens County School District
On January 29, Upstate partners hosted a luncheon to kick off the SC WORK READY COMMUNITIES initiative in Anderson, Oconee and Pickens counties. Upstate partners including Anderson County Economic Development, Clemson Center for Workforce Development, Oconee County Economic Development Commission, Pendleton Regional Education Center, Alliance Pickens and Tri-County Technical College have joined forces to raise awareness and build support for each county's efforts to link education and work force development and align with the needs of the emerging global community. The SC Work Ready Communities initiative seeks to promote economic growth in South Carolina communities by fostering an environment conducive to business and workforce development.
This is a chance to provide training opportunities, not only for those fresh out of high school, but for all citizens who are seeking to better their employment situation, said Anderson County Economic Development Director Burriss Nelson. Each county's momentum and success will be a force multiplier in the Upstate, enhancing our appeal to the global market and attracting industry to our tri-county region.
Richard Blackwell, Executive Director of Oconee Economic Development Commission said, This program is a tool that will help our community on both the economic development recruitment front as well as with business retention efforts. It also demonstrates to the world that our State is serious about business as we are willing to work in partnerships amongst the various education providers, workforce development entities and economic development arms to advance the needs of our business community.
At a time when the processes used in the workplace are becoming more technically advanced each day, it is vital that communities be proactive in their efforts to train and strengthen their workforce, said Ray Farley, Executive Director of Alliance Pickens. By participating in this initiative, our communities will now be able to quantify the skills of their workforce in key areas, offer skill remediation when necessary and ultimately provide current and prospective companies with more complete employees.
South Carolina is one of the initial four states accepted into the pilot project, which is overseen by ACT, a national not-for-profit organization, best known for its college readiness assessment test. The project's goals are to support communities in assessing their current workforce and industry needs, identifying and strategizing to close skill gaps, as well as training and implementing successful economic development initiatives based on WorkKeys® tools, including the National Career Readiness Certificate.
Each county has selected leaders to serve on their respective SC Work Ready Communities Steering Committees and will complete their applications to be designated as SC Certified Work Ready Communities in early February.
