Taebaeksan Mountain Snow Festival sweeps through Gangwon-do province
강원도에 태백산
Although we in the capital have not been seeing too much snow lately,... Gangwon-do province continues to be blanketed in snow.
A festival that only comes around this time of the year has opened there recently, and our Yim Yoonhee is here to tell us all about it.
If you′ve been to Korea you may know about one popular festival that takes place every year.
It′s the Taebaeksan Mountain Snow Festival,... and this year the festival is a snowy success.
Take a look.
Crystal clear skies,... and a winter wonderland.
Every year the Gangwon-do region gets blanketed in fluffy snow,... creating a magical place that seems miles away from reality.
Nestled within the area is the Taebaeksan Mountain,... a mountain that soars 1576 meters into the blue skies,... a mountain known for it′s famous Azalea plants and ancient yew trees, but for now everything is quiet underneath the winter snow.
And to celebrate a festival is held on the Taebaeksan Mountain.
People gather from all over the peninsula to trek the snowy paths and see the many beautiful sights of the mountain and the festival,... including the many massive ice scupltures that decorate these hills.
We don′t see much snow in Suncheon, where we′re from. Here, there are huge ice sculptures and beautiful green lights to see.
Away from the hustle and bustle of the city,... this year′s Taebaeksan Mountain Snow Festival offers the entire family a whirlwind of an experience.
I know this festival offers quite a few activities, as I′ve been there before.
Tell us more about what people can expect.
Well, of course, there is sledding to be enjoyed.
They have quite a few sledding courses to choose from.
There are also snow tunnels to be explored, and there′s even dog sledding and an igloo cafe that I am a big fan of.
But of course the festival is known for the beautiful spectacles of light that include the natural light of the stars as well.
Hwangji Pond, which is part of Taebaeksan Provincial Park, is where you can check out most of their light displays.
It′s so hard to see stars here in Seoul,... so when you go out there it′s absolutely breathtaking.
But driving there is definitely a deterrent for many.
How would you recommend getting there?
There are buses that go from Seoul to the Taebaek Bus Terminal.
And of course you could always take the train.
It is a long trip, about three hours, but this is the festival′s last weekend... and there are many events planned for families, so it′s a perfect time to go check it out.
And it looks like there′s some pretty good weather in the forecast as well.

Taebaeksan Mountain Snow Festival, (태백산 눈축제)
Taebaeksan Mountain is one of the peaks of the Taebaeksan Mountain Range (태백산맥). Due to its high altitude, winter in the Taebaek region lasts longer and is colder than any other part of Korea. That may sound bad, but that's actually the exact reason why Taebaeksan Mountain is one of Korea’s most popular mountains. In winter, Taebaek turns into a beautiful bride with her delicate white veil attracting millions of visitors from around the world to see the beauty of this mountain and to witness Korea’s top winter festival, the Taebaeksan Mountain Snow Festival.
