Taga Taisha Setsubun Festival 多賀大社 節分祭
Feb. 3 is the Setsubun Festival at many temples and shrines in Japan. It marks the beginning of spring according to the lunar calendar. So they throw beans at demons to eliminate the evil of the previous year and bring in good fortune. Taga Taisha had impressive demons (called oni in Japanese) dancers from Shimane Prefecture to act as the demons to chase away during the festival. Photos:
Hōchō-Shiki or “Fish Cutting Ceremony” at Taga Taisha Shiga-Ken.
On June 4th-2017 I attended the annual rice planting festival (御田植祭) at Taga-taisha (多賀大社) in Shiga prefecture. Prior to the rice planting by the Saotome (早乙女) maidens a Hōchō-Shiki or “Fish Cutting Ceremony” was held at the Noh Hall (能舞殿). Hōchō-dō (庖丁道 the way of the cleaver) is a traditional Japanese culinary art form of filleting a fish. Afterwards the sea bream (鯛-Tai) was offered to the Gods.
Japanese cuisine master chef Mr. Inoue Minoru-san (井上実さん) from the Ueki restaurant in Ginza-chō Hikone City (うえき 彦根) performed this ancient sacred ritual. He used the Namiyose no tai (波寄ノ鯛) style of cutting.
Hōchō-dō (庖丁道) is a Shinto ritual properly an offering to the gods and originates in the court cuisine of yūsoku ryōri dating to the Heian period. The filleting is done using only a knife (庖丁) and a pair of metal chopsticks (真魚箸) without touching the fish with one's hands. The chef is dressed in Heian period clothing most notably an eboshi (烏帽子) hat and hitatare (直垂) robe. The hitatare features long sleeves and a drawstring which is used to tie up the sleeves during the ceremony.

Highlights of Traditional Rice Planting Matsuri at Sumiyoshi Taisha Osaka-Japan.
Every year on June 14th the annual “Rice Planting ceremony” (御田植神事) is held at Sumiyoshi Taisha (住吉大社) in Osaka-Japan. Its origin dating back to Empress Jingū (神功皇后) who reigned from 201 to 269 AD. The rice planting event is livened up by performances of different groups some from nearby elementary and junior high school.
The more than two hour matsuri starts with a procession around the rice paddy by all participants. The Ōta-nushi (太田主) or “head of the rice planting ceremony” prays over the fields and sacred water is splashed around the rice paddy’s. Now its time for the sacred cow (斎牛) to be brought in to plow the field a rare sight nowadays. While eight shrine maidens called “Yaotome - 八乙女” perform a sacred dance at the stage the rice planting begins. They are singing songs to encourage each other for the arduous task ahead. The singing and music is said to be of a benefit to the growing of the rice.
A lady dressed in a white and purple kimono called “Mitoshime - 御稔女” performs an ancient dance with hand gestures from Noh theater. She performs a “dragon dance” to the Gods to pray for rain.
There 30 man and woman doing the planting. The woman are called “Kaeueme - 替植女”.
Next-up is a Samurai Warrior (風流武者) who preforms a dance on the stage. Now warriors and foot soldiers coming running unto the field. They are dressed in white and red uniforms and carry sticks. To the delight of the spectators they do some stick fighting. In case you are wondering the white ones represent the Genji clan or (Minamoto clan - 源氏). The red ones are from the Heike clan or “Taira clan - 平氏”. Together they reenact the Genpei War (源平合戦 - 1180–1185) between these two dominant forces.
Lastly the “Rice Planting Dance” (Taue odori - 田植踊) is song while young girls dance around the paddy fields. The ceremony is closed with the traditional song of Sumiyoshi “Sumiyoshi odori - 住吉踊).
