TAIWAN FREE SHUTTLE TOUR
I had 10hrs and 40min to kill at Taiwan Taoyuan International Airport. So I decided to hop on the Free Shuttle Morning Tour and I wasn't disappointed. You can catch the bus from either Terminal 1 or 2.
There are two tours available. One runs in the morning and the last runs in the afternoon. You have to have more than 6hrs as a layover. All you need is to show your passport and connecting flight ticket to qualify for a spot on the shuttle. Beware you are only allowed to bring a back pack on board. Lockers are super cheap, $8 for 6hrs.
Make sure you change enough money to buy some delicious goodies on the way. If you still have 3 hrs to spare after you get back from the tour, feel free to browse or shop in the multitude of duty free stores that are at your disposal.

Mayor returns to Tainan after promotional Hong Kong trip
Tainan Mayor William Lai is back in Taiwan after a promotional trip to Hong Kong. During his trip Lai visited several Tainan-owned businesses and urged Hong Kong residents to visit the southern Taiwan city. When Mayor William Lai traveled to Hong Kong to promote his city, he made this Tainan-owned restaurant a priority.Another Tainan-owned business that Lai visited was a bookstore that opened in Hong Kong after having built a strong reputation back home. Even at the Hong Kong branch, books about Tainan are available. During his visit, Lai explained a major difference between the successes his city and Hong Kong have experienced.William LaiTainan MayorIn the future Tainan's food and traditional snacks will have an opportunity to become corporations. Then they can expand to other cities, suc
Mayors of Tainan, Kaohsiung visit Kumamoto to support ongoing disaster relief
The mayors of Kaohsiung and Tainan earlier today flew to Kumamoto, Japan, as part of an effort to promote ongoing disaster relief efforts in the wake of a deadly earthquake which rocked the region in April. The visit also comes as part of a push to promote tourism between Kumamoto, on the Japanese island of Kyushu, and the two southern Taiwanese cities. Over the Dragon Boat Festival holiday long weekend, passengers on a flight from Kaohsiung to Kumamoto, Japan were joined by Tainan Mayor Lai Ching-te and Kaohsiung Mayor Chen Chu. One passenger excitedly pushed forward to take group pictures with the two.The two mayors boarded the flight as part of a group visit to Kumamoto. They plan to acquaint themselves with the progress of recovery efforts following a magnitude-7.0 earthquake in April. The group will soon be joined by Frank Hsieh, Taiwan’s newly-appointed top diplomatic envoy to Japan, and plans to unveil a donation of more than NT$20 million to the affected area.Chen ChuKaohsiung MayorI’ll give Ambassador Hsieh my encouragement, and I hope that after he takes office he can foster closer and deeper ties between Taiwan and Japan. This visit to Kumamoto by the two DPP mayors is part of a broader push to increase cooperation and exchange between Taiwan and Japan.

Taipei Palace Museum opens southern branch
The Palace Museum in Taipei has opened a branch in the south of the island.
A long-awaited new branch of Taipei's Palace Museum was inaugurated in Chiayi city of south Taiwan on Monday.
The project, consisting of a museum building, a green park and a lake, was built over 11 years, at a cost of more than 341 million U.S. dollars.
The new branch's opening coincides with the 90th year of the establishment of the Palace Museum in Beijing.
Beijing's Palace Museum, also known as the Forbidden City, was inaugurated in 1925.
Taipei's Palace Museum was built in 1965 based on about 600,000 pieces shipped from the mainland when the Kuomintang fled to Taiwan in 1949 after its defeat in a civil war.
About 90 percent of the exhibits in the new branch in Chiayi are from the museum's own collection but it will focus more on Asian art and culture.
The branch will also serve as a cultural and education center for residents in the south of Taiwan.
EP13 Seeing Taiwan: Shing Hwa Tea Shop, Chiang Kai-shek Memorial, Thermal Valley, Lungshan Temple
When I take out the eating clips I can't believe I manage to fit 5 days of sightseeing into a 9 minute video!
Taipei is definitely more fast paced than Kaohsiung and Tainan in the south. Maybe it's because we were going to tourist places but most of the people we encountered were not from Taiwan and many of the people were not as friendly. The cost of things in Taipei is also slightly higher than the south and everywhere we went was much busier.
The highlight was definitely the 興華名茶 Shing Hwa Tea Shop. The owner took so much time to explain how their teas are grown and the difference between high elevation and low elevation teas.
He explained what is used to grow the tea to make it organic and the differences between a small tea garden and a commercial business tea garden. We learnt so much about how to brew tea and the difference slow grown plants make to the flavour, method and effect of the resulting tea. He made us several teas so we could try tea from different elevations and different plants e.g. oolong, tie guan yin and showed us the traditional tea ceremony. There was no pressure to make a purchase and he was so passionate about his product.

Travel in Taiwan (2016, 1/2)
Have your camera ready when boarding the ferry to Qijin Island at Gushan Ferry Pier. Locals stream onto the lower parking-lot deck on scooters (you go to the upper deck, via a separate entrance). The ride across the narrow, ship-packed Kaohsiung Harbor is so quick that many don’t bother to get off their machines. Qijin Island is a 9km-long silt-created giant sandbar that serves as a breakwater and defines the harbor’s form. Its tourist area is on the north end, beyond the ferry pier.
Qihou Lighthouse, a snow-white 11-meter-high Baroque-style tower erected by the Japanese in 1916, stands at the edge of a sea-facing cliff guarding the harbor’s exceedingly narrow north-end mouth. Enthralling views of the busy harbor can be enjoyed as ships squeeze by below. The old Qihou Battery, on the west side of the hill, was built by a justifiably anxious Qing Dynasty government in the 1870s, fearful of invasion by the Japanese or Western powers.
The young, expansive, and still-growing Pier-2 Art Center (pier-2.khcc.gov.tw), a special zone that is at the heart of the city’s cultural-creative bloom, has become one of its most popular attractions. The numerous old, renovated Kaohsiung Harbor warehouses here, long abandoned, were formerly used to store such goods as fish meal and granulated sugar. Today they are cultural-creative incubator stages for domestic and international exhibitions, festivals, live indoor and outdoor musical, theatrical, and busker performances, and large-scale outdoor installation artworks and graffiti-style/3D murals, many wonderfully quirky and whimsical, some created by artists-in-residence.
The king of Kaohsiung has long been, and remains, the lofty 85 Sky Tower, which looks like a giant spacecraft propped atop two massive booster rockets, ready to launch. Two spanking-new structures, Kaohsiung Exhibition Center (kecc.com.tw) and Kaohsiung Main Public Library (ksml.edu.tw), are within easy walking distance. The park-surrounded harborside exhibition facility looks like a paean to Beijing’s iconic Bird’s Nest. Be sure to visit the green library’s lovely 8F rooftop hanging garden, which has a fine broad view of the harbor and Qijin.
What’s not to love about the Love River? On my first few visits, in the 1990s, it was a brackish “waterway” in which the water moved little, if at all. Today, thanks to dedicated eco-engineering, it is clean, the waters flow freely, and fish have returned. The landscaped banks are lined with benches, bike- and pedestrian-friendly paths, and attractive lamp lighting. The mood is best at night, when the cafés, bars, and small eateries are brightly lit up.
21 Things to do in Kaohsiung, Taiwan
These are my carefully selected 21 best things to do in Kaohsiung, the most underrated city in Asia. I included gems like Cijin Boulevard, Old Taiwan Restaurant, 85 Sky Tower, the ICE BOWL, chocolate chicken at Ruifeng Night Market and the Brickyard for the best nightlife of Kaohsiung. I had no expectations before driving down to Kaohsiung. This massive city on the southern tip of Taiwan is a tropical paradise with tons of fun things to do, delicious foods to eat and mingle with its friendly locals. After you watch my video I guarantee you will put Kaohsiung on your bucket list.
Kaohsiung is best known for the Dragon & Tiger pagodas located at the Lotus pond north of downtown, the most facinating thing is the zigzag pathway which is meant to deflect evil. Do make sure to enter through the dragon's mouth first and exit through the tiger's mouth to obtain good fortune. Afterwards, treat yourself to a massive shaved ice dessert at the Ice Bowl located at Binhua 1st Road.
Kick off the next day with a typical southern Taiwanese breakfast at Dandan Hamburger, famous for it delicious soup burger combo. I stayed at the massive 85 Sky Tower hotel on the 61st floor with mesmerizing views of Kaohsiung.
Cijin Island is located in front of Kaohsiung harbor, the largest harbor of Taiwan at which you can rent an electric buggy and cruise along its beautiful boulevard while making selfie stops at the Rainbow Church, giant sea shell and end your adventure with a lunch at the Windmill Station Sushi Restaurant.
At the Windmill Station Restaurant make sure to order the gigantic chirashi bowl of assorted fish with high-grade uni, unagi and tuna. Make sure to top it off with Kaohsiung waffles! On the way back to the Cijin Ferry, make stops at the Cijin dried fish market, Cihou fort for the best skyline view of Kaohsiung and Mazu shrine.
During the evening take the subway to Formosa Boulevard Station to admire world's largest glass art installation consisting of 4500 glass panels.
For night markets check out Ruifeng Night Market located just north of downtown Kaohsiung where you must try the Gua Bao with juicy pork belly, chicken on a stick stuffed with sticky rice and bizarre chocolate chicken for the ultimate night market experience.
To really venture out, go to OLD TAIWAN restaurant which is a themed 1950's Taiwanese restaurant with incredibly local dishes. The dishes truly tasted like they were cooked with love by grandma Taiwan, a great delicious alternative to night markets.
Kaohsiung has a fun and vibrant nightlife, for an epic night out check out bars; Black Dog, an expat bar and Brickyard for their underground dance off parties, foosball tables, pool tables and great local atmosphere. The best nightclubs in town are Muse Kaohsiung and LAMP Disco which often hosts all-you-can-drink parties with a young local crowd. Not much English is spoken at these nightclubs so be aware.
In conclusion, Kaohsiung made it to my Top 5 list of favorite cities in Asia. Most likely due to not having any expectations and being blown away by the tropical climate, delicious local dishes, friendly locals and fantastic parties. Kaohsiung, I shall return in the near future!

Kaohsiung City, Taiwan - Part 1
Kaohsiung City (高雄市) is one of the five special municipalities in Taiwan. Located in southern-western Taiwan and facing the Taiwan Strait, it is by area the largest municipality, at 2,947.62 km2, and second most populous (by urban area) with a population of approximately 2.77 million. Since its start at 17th century, Kaohsiung has grown from a small trading village, into the political, economic, transportation, manufacturing, refining, shipbuilding, and industrial center of southern Taiwan. It is a global city with sufficiency as categorized by Globalization and World Cities Research Network in 2012.
The Kaohsiung International Airport serving the city is the third largest airport in Taiwan. The Port of Kaohsiung is the largest harbor in Taiwan, but not officially part of Kaohsiung City. The southern terminal of the Freeway 1 is in Kaohsiung. For north-south travel on railway, the city is served by the Taiwan Railways Administration stations of TRA Western Line and Pingtung Line. The Taiwan High Speed Rail also provides fast and frequent railway connection to Taipei. The Kaohsiung Mass Rapid Transit, the city's subway system, launched in early 2008. Kaohsiung was the host city of the World Games 2009, a multi-sport event primarily composed of sports not featured in the Olympic Games. The city is also home to the Republic of China Navy fleet headquarters and academy.

Our journey begins and our first stop is Da Keng Leisure Farm at Tainan!
It's a hot springs spa and from there you can get a spectacular view of the sunrise.
For more information on Da Keng Leisure Farm, check out their facebook page!
Day 2:
From the mountainous Tainan we head to sunny paradise Kenting, which is located at the South of Taiwan. We stayed at Minimi Inn, a minsu with cute interior design and an excellent central location. Highly recommended if you're staying at Kenting!
Day 3:
Fun, sun and sand awaits us at Kenting and the ocean there is really so deep blue. It's breath taking! We also went to Ou Luan Bi Lighthouse, the star attraction of Kenting, and the small town of Hengchun too.
Day 4:
Today, we left Kenting for Taipei! The highlight of the day is definitely our trip to Shilin Night Market where we got to try all of Taiwan's delicious street food. We stayed at Bonstay, a bed and breakfast inn, and certainly our favorite accommodation of the entire trip! Really really recommend it if you're staying in Taipei.
Day 5:
We spent our entire day at Leofoo Village, a theme park cum animal safari and made our money worth by going on all the rides! The most exhilarating, adrenaline pumped day of our entire trip! Check out our other videos by roving reporter Meihui at her facebook page too!
Day 6:
Shopping day at Wufenpu! Check out our R21 Summer Fashion Show featuring the clothes we bought.
Day 7:
Shopping day at Ximending! We also ate at the famous Modern Toilet restaurant there. Our new hotel is Taipei Neo Square Skydome which is a cosy loft apartment. The beds are a little too hard for my liking so I won't really recommend it hahaha. Check out our R21 Summer Fashion Show too! :D
Day 8:
Today, we explored the Danshui area but sadly the weather got the better of us so we didn't manage to go cycling in the island of Bali as planned, but we spent the rest of the day at Shilin instead.
Day 9:
We got on the local trains and explored Jiu Fen and Shi Fen. Jiu Fen is up in the mountains in the clouds, a bustling alley full of specialty food shops and souvenir trinkets. Definitely full of magic as well. ^^ We ended our trip in Taiwan on a high note setting off our sky lanterns with our hopes and dreams all written on them.
Day 10:
Home Sweet Home back in Singapore at long last!
