Japan Files #14: A Trip to Taisanji Temple in Kobe
More of a traditional Japanese feel to things in this video. Here is footage from a Sunday afternoon trip to a local temple. Taisanji is one of the oldest in the area, dating back to the Kamakura period or 14th century. Set against the autumn leaves, it really is quite special. I left feeling peaceful...

Neri-kuyou / Taisan-ji Temple, Kobe (太山寺/練供養)
Neri-kuyou is a peculiar event held on May 12th at Taisan-ji Temple, Kobe. This ceremony expresses the scene that Amida Buddha (Buddha with limitless life) and 25 Bosatsu (Buddhist saint) welcome the dead person to Goku-raku (the land of unending delight).
In this ceremony, the worshippers receive a kind of Buddhistic baptism, and make the vow to lead the devout Buddhist life. And then they disguise themselves as 25 Bosatsu for the soul of their ancestors and parade around the Amida hall.

JAPAN: Hiroshima & Kyoto & in Two Days
How I planned it:
Thanks to the amazing trains, we were able to see a lot in Kyoto and have time to see Peace Memorial Park in Hiroshima. The experience of going to Hiroshima was worth it, even though it was several hours of train rides. Kyoto is amazing, and another night or two would have been nice, but I'm happy we saw as much as we did.

HIROSHIMA: We arrived in Hiroshima from Tokyo on a Wednesday and saw:
(0:13) Timelapse of the A-bomb Dome
(0:17) One meeting of several with the Japanese school groups practicing English with us.
(0:24) Views from around Peace Memorial Park and of the A-bomb Dome, also went into the museum, which my camera was put away for to take in what I was seeing/ reading. Highly recommend going!
KYOTO: We arrived in Kyoto that same Wednesday evening, ate, and went to sleep, and the next morning we woke up and walked/ taxied/ trained all over Kyoto to see everything we wanted to in one day:
(1:06) Kiyomizu-dera Temple
(1:23) Taisanji
(1:29) Yasaka Shrine
(1:30) Chion-in Temple
(1:35) The Iwatayama Monkey Park
(2:30) Arashiyama Bamboo Grove
(2:51) The Fushimi Inari Shrine (1,000 Tori Gates)
(3:30) Mt. Fuji from our train back to Tokyo
TOP TRAVEL TIPS:
JAPAN:
Get a JR Rail Pass before flying to Japan!
HIROSHIMA:
*There are places to store your bags both in the train station and at Peace Memorial Park, and it's cheaper at the park, and there are larger lockers.
*Taking a taxi to the park is the quickest way there
*Once at the park, get admission for the museum, it is worth the money and time (about $5 USD)
*Give yourself time to look at the Atomic Bomb Dome from across the river and up close
KYOTO:
*We walked from Kiyomizu-dera to Taisanji, Shōhō-ji Temple, Chion-in, to Yasaka Shrine all in a few hours.
*Obvious, but- wear excellent walking/ running shoes for Kyoto. You will walk everywhere. We walked over 13 miles in one day.
*The Iwatayama Monkey Park is up a very steep hill. I think it's about 3 miles, so be prepared and make sure it's worth it to see the monkeys.
*The Fushimi Inari Shrine (aka 1,000 Tori Gates) is amazing and not to be missed. The hike to the top and back can take 5 hours, so leave yourself plenty of time.
*Get lots of Matchu ice cream!

Japan Files #15: Suma Temple
This is the second temple visit in a row for this channel. This time I take a walk around Sumadera or Suma Temple in Kobe. It's one of my favourite places in Kobe.
Japan, China and Thailand Backpacking Asia
One year after Europe, I hit the road again and headed to the Far East for my next backpacking trip. Where I did a double challenge of charity hikes for ROWW, Reach Out Worldwide. The first was a night climb up to the summit of Mt Fuji in Japan and then on to China to camp and walk a wild section of the Great Wall! All in all we raised £500. I’m not in anyway associated Reach Out Worldwide. However what the team do, it’s a great cause that means a lot to myself and a few old friends who aspire to have a future career in this field of work!
Then when my time in the North ended, for the second leg of my trip, I headed down to Thailand in South East Asia. Where I got the chance to finally do my advanced open water scuba diving course. Then after spending sometime exploring and island hopping, there was only one way in which to end this trip and that was to attend the famous FullMoon party!
