Farmers in Taveta are now turning to new ways of utilising their large tracks of land. Some of them are using their lands to conserve wildlife .
#1.5 Lumo: Community conservancy in Tsavo
The second stop on our train journey is Lumo, located at the bottom of the Taita Hills (which we explored in the previous episode) at the awesome Lion's Bluff lodge. Because Lumo is a community conservancy, the rules here are more flexible than in national parks. Also, the income generated from tourism is put back in the community: this means sustainable safaris! From bush walks to night safaris, there is no shortage of adventurous activities here.

Built in the shape of a German Fort, Sarova Taita Hills Game Lodge is one that bursts with rich history from the World War I. The beautifully designed lodge offers a truly exclusive bush experience, being situated in the heart of the Taita Hills Wildlife Sanctuary, a private conservancy of 28,000 acres located at the foot of the Taita Hills and adjacent to Tsavo West National Park, one of the world's largest game reserves.
Sarova Taita Hills Game Lodge provides the exceptional experience of proximity to the wildlife and a viewing gallery from the comfort of your room balcony . Since the lodge is unfenced, animals such as gazelles and elephants are commonly sighted on the grounds and at the watering hole near the swimming pool.
Sarova Taita Hills Game Lodge offers luxury accommodation and amenities and is the perfect base in an unforgettable setting to explore the natural environment around.
Sarova Taita Hills Game Lodge is located at the main entrance to the Taita Hills Sanctuary in South Eastern Kenya, 400 km from Nairobi and 200 km from Mombasa.
A one hour flight from Nairobi or 30 min from Mombasa by private charter lands at the Lodge's own airstrip. The sanctuary is a 3 hour drive from Mombasa and a 6 hour drive from Nairobi on tarmac roads.
Located at the main entrance to the Sanctuary, Sarova Taita Hills Game Lodge is an inviting stone building of 60 spacious rooms and two suites, all with their own private viewing balcony.
Clients can command views of the adjacent Taita Hills, or the well maintained gardens surrounding the Sanctuary.
At night, floodlights illuminate the swimming pool and gardens and provide an opportunity to see any wildlife in the vicinity. It is not uncommon to see elephants daily at the watering hole next to the swimming pool.
In addition to the rooms and suites, the Lodge has a Main Restaurant, Bar & Lounge and many bush dining options. The free form swimming pool has its own pool bar. The Lodge has its own fleet of well equipped safari vehicles with excellent guides. There are meeting rooms and numerous outdoor venues for dining and leisure. There is a gift shop, fuel station and business center.
The climate is very pleasant, with temperatures averaging between 18 Degrees Centigrade and 30 Degrees Centigrade year round. There are sporadic rains in March, April, November & December.

Standard Rooms
Sarova Taita Hills Game Lodge has 60 well appointed standard rooms with stunning views of the lush gardens surrounding the lodge, the beautiful free form swimming pool and some have exclusive views of the watering hole. Rooms at the Lodge are with double, twin or triple beds depending on room type. All rooms have a private viewing balcony commanding views of the adjacent Taita Hills or the well maintained gardens and surrounding Sanctuary. The elegantly furnished rooms are spacious with a sitting area and ensuite bathrooms.
Renowned for its exquisite dining experience, Sarova Taita Hills Game Lodge excels in the freshness and quality of its food which is supported by the Lodge's own vegetable and herb garden.
Chala Restaurant
This is the main restaurant serving buffet breakfast, lunch and dinner is fitted with live cooking counters suitable for preparing specialty dishes.
We offer a wide variety of mouth watering cuisines ranging from: Pan-African, Pan-European and Pan and Asian. The Salad buffet counter has a wide variety of salads using the fresh ingredients and herbs from the Lodge's own vegetable and herb garden.
The Dessert buffet has a selection of delightful desserts. Vegetarian Dishes are always available, and guests with any special dietary requirements are also catered for.
The restaurant has a capacity of 200 people.

The wildlife in the Tsavo east National Park (Kenya)
(EN) Tsavo East National Park is one of the oldest and largest parks in Kenya at 11,747 square kilometres. Opened in April 1948, it is located near the village of Voi in the Taita-Taveta District of Coast Province. The park is divided into east and west sections by the A109 road and a railway. Named for the Tsavo River, which flows west to east through the national park, it borders the Chyulu Hills National Park, and the Mkomazi Game Reserve in Tanzania.

The Shimba Hills National Reserve is a small National Reserve in the Coast Province of Kenya, 33 km from Mombasa and 15 km from Diani. The reserve is an area of coastal rain-forest, woodland, and grassland. It is an important area for plant biodiversity – over 50% of the 159 rare plants in Kenya are found in the Shimba Hills, including some endangered species of cycad and orchids. It is also a nationally important site for birds and butterflies. There are estimated to be approximately 700 elephants in the reserve. Shimba Hills contains Kenya's only population of Sable Antelope. There are about 100 in the park.
