Travel in Taiwan May/June, 2016:
Xiaoyeliu was our first stop inside the East Coast National Scenic Area (eastcoast-nsa.gov.tw), which stretches from just north of Taitung City to just south of Hualien City. Beyond its sheer beauty, this natural stone-sculpture scenic area is highly info-taining for those types – like your writer – thrilled with matters geology-related. Along the shore you’ll find large rock formations – honeycomb rock, mushroom rock, tofu rock, cuestas – and in the visitor center well-crafted models and rock samples introducing the geological features of Xiaoyeliu and the coastal mountains.
A short distance north is Jialulan. This is a seaside art park – and an eco-engineering showcase, on a transformed waste-soil site created during construction of the adjoining air-force base – with works spread out over an expansive grassland. Most are of wood, and most of the wood is of coastline-gathered driftwood, a popular Taitung-artist medium. My favorite installation features a wood-weave shell stuffed full with the human-created detritus that washes ashore in monster storms – things you’d expect, like fishing gear, but also much that’s bizarre. A stethoscope? A calculator?
Another short drive north brings you to small Jiamuzi Bay, at the foot of Mt. Dulan. This is a place of stunning archetypal tropical scenery – the mountain sloping right down to the coast, coconut trees along the shore, attractive coral reefs just offshore, disappearing under frothy waves and then popping up again. This is a popular spot for surfing, snorkeling, and other watersports.
The Water Running Upward attraction, a must-visit spot for the tour-bus crowd, is just south of Dulan village. And just what is it? A long, narrow, shallow irrigation channel comes down from the hills, running through a small sculpted park. And for all the world, it looks as though the gurgling waters defy gravity along this 100m stretch. Real or illusion? We inspected the waterworks from every angle; the stream, counter-intuitively, seems not to slow down or pool up at all. Take the riddle on for yourself with a first-hand gander. (Nevertheless, I give you the answer at article’s end.)
The sprawling, big-shouldered old Dulan Sugar Factory, in Dulan village, one of the coast’s largest Amis-tribe settlements, makes sugar no more. The heritage complex, now protected, is today a place for local and expat artists and craftsmen. There are artist workshops, a cultural-creative boutique, a café, a craft brewery, Taiwanese and Japanese restaurants, a quick-food kiosk, a driftwood stage, and other attractions. The big action is on Saturday nights, when there is free live music, with both local and expatriate talent performing.
On the slopes of Mt. Dulan just to Dulan’s northwest, on a road that leads to the popular Moonlight Inn café (see Stay/Eat/Buy article), is the Dulan Site. The short paths to the spread-out finds on view, which include a sarcophagus and large stones from a long wall used in worship rites, start at roadside and have clear signage. They are from what is called the Qilin culture, and date to about 3,000 years ago. It is believed that the local tribal inhabitants likely moved up here after the coast was hit by a tsunami. Mt. Dulan is revered as a divine presence by the area’s Amis and Bunun tribal groups.
INJURED in Kenting and WEDGIE in Taitung | 12 Days in Taiwan EP3
Episode 3 features highs of paragliding and soaring the skies of Taitung with a wedgie and also the lows of being pounded by waves in Kenting while attempting to surf and ALMOST dying (or at least being seriously injured) but regardless of it all we never lost our sense of adventure and we still filled our tummies with delicious food.
Heading south to Kenting and Taitung, there was one mission in mind and that was to explore by doing and in some ways we got more than we bargained for. We combined our stay at Afei's hotel/inn/hostel with delicious meals there and also his personally run surfing trips. While we were brimming with confidence since South Africa, we totally weren't prepared for how hard it was out there with the big waves and challenging conditions. We both came out with injuries. Wanting to do something a little bit more laid back, we eventually got scooters, although that was a mission on its own. In Taitung, we got to realize our dreams of paragliding although even that was very last minute. On our very last day in the city, we borrowed bikes from our hotel and roamed through the city and as usual, managed to find great food places along the way.
Taiwanese re qing was on display again in this travelogue with Sean whom we met at paragliding. He totally didn't have to but he helped us find a cheaper way back home. We also ended up having dinner together at the train station as we waited. His story is actually quite amazing on its own as he was partway through his hike around the entire country with nothing more than his backpack. His determination and strength was a true inspiration.

From Travel in Taiwan magazine 2018-11-12:
By Rick Charette
Dulan village has established a reputation as a little bohemian paradise in the last decade or so. It is one of the East Coast’s largest Amis-tribe settlements and attracts many artists and surfing enthusiasts from the “outside world.” Locals say this means anywhere beyond the high central mountains that keep the East Coast so quiet, limiting the number of tourists.
The coastal highway does double-duty as the main drag, home to a growing collection of small bars, cafés, eateries, and shops that cater to the surfer/artist crowd. Taiwan’s biggest surfing event, the Taiwan Open of Surfing (taiwanopenofsurfing.org), is staged not far to the north, at Jinzun Fishing Harbor. It attracts top-tier talent from around the globe.
The sprawling, big-shouldered old Dulan Sugar Factory, at Dulan’s southern end, makes sugar no more. This protected heritage complex is today a creative oasis for local and expatriate artists and craftspeople. There are artist workshops, a cultural-creative boutique, a café, a craft brewery, Taiwanese and Japanese restaurants, a snack-food kiosk, a driftwood stage, and other attractions. The big action happens Saturday night, with free live-music sessions featuring both local (indigenous and Han Chinese) and expatriate talent.
The Amis people, Taiwan’s largest tribe, are spread throughout Hualien and Taitung counties on the East Coast. Each year villages stage Amis Harvest Festival celebrations in mid/late summer, and Dulan’s are among the most elaborate, spanning three days. Taiwan’s tribal peoples have been inviting tourists to these gatherings only since the early 2000s. Visitors to Dulan are welcome on the first two days, but the proceedings are more solemn, and photography is discouraged. It is the third day that draws the big crowds, with photography welcome. The colorful three-hour extravaganza kicks off with a grand march into the village recreational ground by members in full traditional regalia, followed by exuberant ritual singing and dancing. The street in front is lined with snack stands, a number selling tribal treats.
Inn By The Village
This is a handsome young boutique hotel located toward the southern edge of Taitung City’s central urban area. The owner is a senior citizen who loves cycling, and he built the hotel because he wanted upscale accommodation right in the city for his extended family when using it as a base. A testament to the facility’s quality and attractiveness is the fact that most balloonists from overseas taking part in the annual Taiwan International Balloon Festival stay here.
The hotel towers above the other local architecture. If you stay in a south-facing room you can enjoy an unobstructed view of ocean to the left, mountains to the right, and a meeting of the two far off in the center. Hotel amenities include Jenny’s Bar & Grill (Southeast Asian/American fusion restaurant/bar with live music on weekends), gym, gift shop/lounge, self-service laundry room, and bike storage.

The Taitung County Government has launched a program to reduce plastic trash to help reduce the county's excess garbage. Taitung's Taiwan Environmental Protection Union also opened a Zero garbage education center to teach the public how to reduce trash. Environmental groups are urging the country to increase plastic recycling in Taitung.

UNEXPECTED PERFORMANCE | DOME OF LIGHT | KAOSHIUNG | TAIWAN
Sharing my experience in Kaoshiug-a coastal city in southern Taiwan.
Formosa boulevard station is one of the places I wanted to visit not only because the fact that it’s ranked second-most beautiful metro station in the world but for it’s famous Dome of Light - the largest glass work in the world, designed by Italian artist Narcissus Quagliata. It is 30 metres in diameter and covers an area of 2,180 square metres, made up of 4,500 glass panels.
Unexpectedly I witnessed a one of a kind performance.

Travel in Taiwan (Jan./Feb. 2017):
The Pingxi Branch Line
Riding the Pingxi Branch Line in New Taipei City is a journey into the past, as well as a jaunt into lush and scenic countryside that feels hundreds of miles apart from busy and crowded central Taipei, which is in fact just a quick bus or train trip away.
Buy a Day Pass!
There’s a lot to see between Haikeguan and Jingtong, so you might want to pick up a Pingxi Line 1-Day Pass (NT$80), which allows unlimited travel (and stops) along the length of what the Taiwan Railways Administration collectively calls the Pingxi/Shen’ao Line. Tickets are sold at the Taipei, Songshan, Keelung, Ruifang, and Yilan railway stations, as well as some of the stations on the Pingxi Branch Line. If you’re just stopping at a couple of the stations, note that an EasyCard (a popular Taiwan smart card) can also be used.
Shifen
Continuing inland, beyond Sandiaoling the branch line follows the river through a scenic wooded gorge. The train is soon plunged into darkness as it enters the first of four tunnels on the line. For much of the way to the next station, Dahua, the train is either underground or the tracks and the river are crammed side by side in a rocky ravine. Try to get a seat on the right-hand side to get the best views. After rain, tributary streams course down both sides of the gorge in a series of small waterfalls.
After passing tiny Dahua Station, the train emerges from the last tunnel on the branch line, rolls over a long bridge high above the river, and runs straight down the center of the main street of Shifen before coming to a halt at this village’s station. Shifen is one of the most popular stops on the line.
All kinds of Taiwanese snacks, from shaved ice and popsicles to grilled sausages and stinky tofu, can be sampled in the main street, which is also a great place to make, decorate, and set off a sky lantern. Write wishes or messages with brush and paint on the sides of a meter-tall paper lantern, fix a wad of “ghost money” inside, and after lighting the money allow the lantern to float up into the sky, where the wishes will hopefully be communicated to the gods!
Follow the crowd that gets off at the railway station to the northeastern end of Shifen Old Street, follow the main highway until you reach a fork, and take the road to the right to get to the Shifen Visitor Center and, further on, to the magnificent Shifen Waterfall. After heavy rainfall, this 30-meter-wide curtain of water is awesomely powerful, hence its nickname, “Taiwan’s Niagara Falls.” After enjoying the waterfall, cross the Waterfall Viewing Suspension Bridge right beside the railway line and return to Shifen on the main highway.

MyInspireProject EP3 – Taiwan, A Home Island to a Wealth of Culture, Sensational Food and Nature
Our new episode is dedicating to our home town, #Taiwan, an island formerly known as Formosa in the 17th century and remains largely undiscovered by Western travelers. But for those who make it here, they are in for a real treat.
Taiwan displays a wealth of culture with an eclectic mix of Chinese, Western, Japanese and indigenous influences. We have invited Taiwanese actor and celebrity TV host, Yi Lee, to explore the #StreetFood Culture with us. And we were also honored to experience the new era of the traditional Puppet Show and Art with Pili International Media and Taiwanese designer Wang Li Ling. The biggest surprise of all, is Taiwan’s nature: from towering mountains, rushing rivers, tropical beaches and sheers cliffs on the coast. With no doubt, Taiwan is one of the most welcoming places on earth, as we encountered numerous acts of generosity and kindness throughout the journey.
Through our story, we would like to share the highlights of the new “#MadeinTaiwan,” and we hope this hidden paradise would attract more adventurous travels from the rest of the world.

SO MANY COOL BUILDINGS | Kaohsiung, Taiwan
I made it to Kaohsiung! It's a major city in southern Taiwan. I spent a couple days exploring all there is to see.
I first went to Cijin Island. I attempted to see the lighthouse (it was closed) and got to see the fort and Tianhou Temple. In the main part of the city, I walked around Pier-2 Art Center and Lotus Pond. Finally, I visited Dream Mall - the biggest mall in Taiwan. I didn't do much shopping but there is a ferris wheel that gave me a cool view over the city at night.
Much love and happy travels
