Depreciation of yen leads to 37% growth in Taiwanese visitors to Japan
According to the Tourism Bureau, 2.75 million trips were made from Taiwan to Japan from the beginning of the year to the end of November, an increase of 37 percent compared to the previous year. The sharp increase is being attributed to a weak yen. Tourists are eager to take in this winter wonderland as well as delicious Japanese food. The travel industry says those interested in visiting Japan should make bookings as early as possible. Yu Guo-jhenTravel AgentFor Japanese tours, this month we will basically sell out all of next month’s spaces. The most popular time for sales is two months before a tour is scheduled to depart. The yen continues to depreciate. At one point last year, 0.38 NT was needed to purchase a yen, but now just 0.266 NT is needed. Many tourists travel to Japan simply to shop. Travel agents find the most popular products are cosmetics, clothing and electronics. Some agents sell trips by saying that savings from overseas shopping is enough to pay for airfare. Yu Guo-jhenTravel AgentA roundtrip ticket from Taipei to Tokyo is around NT$15,000. If you shop for higher value products, it’s relatively easy for your savings to actually pay for your airfare.Next year, peak travel is expected over winter vacation as well as April’s cherry blossom festival. Many have already inquired about these advance bookings as tourists are jumping on the chance to visit Japan now that costs have declined.
Chinese tourists ditch Japan in favor of Taiwan
Anger over the Tiaoyutai Islands has led many Chinese tourists to choose Taiwan over Japan. They are flooding local tourist sites and shops.Workers hold a sign to say that entry is temporarily closed. An indirect effect of the controversy was an increase in Chinese tourists to Taiwan.Chinese TouristJapan bothers us. Indonesian Tourist in Japan
Despite decreasing Chinese tourists, Taiwan’s annual visitors reach 10 million
The outlook for Taiwan''s tourism may have appeared dismal given the sharp reduction in Chinese visitors this year, the situation may not be as bad as it seems. Visitors from Japan, Taiwan''s second-largest source of tourists, reached 1.52 million in October this year, an increase of 17 percent on a year earlier. And in even better news for local tourism operators, visitor numbers today broke the 10 million mark, nine days earlier than they did last year. Foreign tourists have always considered bustling Ximending (in downtown Taipei) a must-see. These days, fewer Chinese tourists can be seen on Ximending’s streets, but there has been significant growth in tourist numbers from the likes of Japan, Korea, Hong Kong and Macau. Tourism Bureau statistics reveal it’s not only the Japanese who love traveling in Taiwan. Korean visitors grew a (whopping) 32.5 percent from January to October this year with altogether 700,000 visitors. Tourist numbers have also grown not only from Hong Kong and Macau, but also Southeast Asia, the U.S. and Europe. Voice of Wayne Liu Tourism Bureau Deputy Director GeneralBecause we (implemented) such a diverse New Southbound Policy in the second half of this year, in particular offering visa-free treatment to Thailand and Brunei, visitors from Thailand have grown about 40 percent and those from Brunei as much as 50 percent. The Tourism Bureau says it expects Taiwan’s Northeast Asian tourist markets to continue to maintain stable growth, while it plans to strengthen its strategy of (attracting tourists) from emerging markets in Southeast Asia.

Fact-checking in focus as fake news turns deadly at Kansai
For many of us, checking messages on Line and logging in to Facebook or Instagram is a daily habit. Social media can keep us in touch with friends, but they also expose us to information from well beyond our inner circle. A problem arises when that information is accepted without a fact-check, and when it is sent to other people who also take it as the truth. Last week, the Interior Ministry drafted legislation that tries to fight the rampant spread of fake news in the age of social media. The government argues that fake news can have harmful consequences. Today we''ll look at an instance of fake news that ultimately became fatal. Here''s our Sunday special report.September 2018. Typhoon Jebi slammed through Japan''s Kansai region, shutting down Kansai International Airport. After the typhoon departed, a storm of another kind began to brew.During the onslaught of Typhoon Jebi, reports emerged that China had sent coach buses to the airport to rescue stranded travelers. Soon afterward, Taiwan''s representative office in Japan came under fire for not doing the same. Coming under mounting pressure, Taiwan''s head representative in Osaka Su Chii-cherng committed suicide. It was later discovered that the many reports of China’s storm evacuation had not been true. How did these reports come about?Lin Tsu-i Manager of PTT Facebook groupOn Sept. 6, a post appeared on PTT’s gossip forum. People were asking about Kansai Airport and whether there was any gossip about Chinese travelers getting priority when boarding the buses. The post mentioned that if you said you were Chinese, you were allowed to board.Though the report originated on PTT, users of the popular forum had taken it with a grain of salt.Lin Tsu-i Manager of PTT Facebook groupSomeone might post something about Kansai Airport. But then someone else might immediately post something underneath, refuting the original post with information he found and saying that the truth of the matter is different. So through netizens, there are checks and balances, and rumors are brought to light. The incident at Kansai Airport had contributed to the death of a long-time diplomat, who the government had spent years cultivating. Some have pointed the finger of blame at the PTT bulletin board system, but the real problem is broader.Hu Yuan-hui Mass communications professorThe spread of fake news has turned into something of an ecosystem. From its production to its spread to its consumption, in every part of the process, there are accomplices in this ecosystem. The first one is the platform of internet social media. The second is the so-called mainstream media, and the third is the user or the so-called information consumers. Liu Chang-te Journalism professorNetizens like to taunt reporters, baiting journalists to copy online posts and pass it off as news. Actually, I don''t think there''s anything wrong with reporters copying something from PTT, because information on the internet is a lead. The problem is what follows. The problem is that they don’t verify the facts.Taiwan''s news organizations have undergone rapid change in recent years due to the rise of the internet. Many traditional broadcast and print media companies now have to offer an online version in order to be seen. In their dash for breaking news and online clicks, cracks have formed in the business of news production.Hu Yuan-hui Mass communications professorThese outlets want to break news fast to get attention, to grab eyeballs. The result is that the news value of accuracy has gradually become sidelined in the process of news production. Some outlets have taken steps to protect quality even as they strive for speed and a higher click-through rate.Hu Yuan-hui Mass communications professorOverseas, some media outlets that prioritize quality have an internal control system, or they’ll have senior staff compensate for mistakes made in the pursuit of speed. They’ll have these experienced journalists carry out fact-checking.Not only have news groups set up their own fact-checking outfits, an increasing number of independent organizations has emerged with the mission of checking facts in the news. One such organization is the Taiwan FactCheck Center, which was established in July. In just three months'' time, it published more than 20 fact-check reports, including one on the Kansai Airport incident.Hu Yuan-hui Mass communications professorWe enumerated the issues in detail and translated them into Japanese. We sent the translated document to a Japanese fact-check organization, which then carried out interviews with the relevant persons at Kansai Airport.Liu Chang-te Journalism professorThe way to address fake news is not actually to stamp it out. We should let good media outlets cover this fake news. They cover it and they verify the facts. That’s the way to approach the problem at a fundamental level. Each day, we’re ...

Japan's Yakuza: Inside the syndicate | The Economist
In 2011 a Belgian photographer was allowed entry into one of Japan’s Yakuza families. Over two years, he captured the lives of those living in the underworld.

Japan's Yakuza: Inside the syndicate. With at least 50,000 members, Japan's Yakuza gangs form one of the world's largest criminal networks. Anton Kusters, a Belgian photographer, was allowed a rare glimpse inside a Yakuza family in early 2009. He documented the family for two years.
The Ya-Ku-Za means 8-9-3, a losing combination in a card game similar to Blackjack. The exact origins of the Yakuza are unclear, but they are thought to have descended from masterless samurai in the early 17th century. In the 18th century, these poor, landless bandits began grouping together, creating families.
The family Anton spent time with controls Kabukicho, Tokyo's red-light district; its business is largely prostitution. Other Yakuza criminal operations include drug trafficking, money laundering, gambling and bribery.
The Yamaguchi-gumi is Japan's largest organised-crime group. By one estimate, its revenue in 2014 was $80bn. In 2013, Italy's 'Ndrangheta mafia has a turnover of around $69bn.
In February 2011, towards the end of the project, Anton was at home in Europe, when he received a call from the Yakuza family. Miyamoto-san, a high ranking Yakuza boss, was in hospital after suffering a stroke. Anton returned, and was invited to attend the prominent Yakuza boss' funeral.

As the Sino-US SED continues, the first group of Chinese tourists arrived in Washington's Dulles International airport Tuesday night local time.
There were more than 200 travelers from Beijing, Shanghai and Guangdong. They're on a 12-day tour, which will take them to Washington, New York and Los Angeles. Their arrival in Washington DC coincides with the fourth round of China-US Strategic Economic Dialogue in the States, which is significant for the opening of US-bound Chinese tours.
Local governments have arranged a series of welcome ceremonies for the Chinese tourists. The New York Tourism Bureau will host a cocktail party on their arrival. And the Los Angeles Tourism Bureau is welcoming the Chinese tourists with China week.
The US is China's fifth largest tourist destination. Last year, over 710,000 Chinese people visited the US, that's up 12 percent compared with the previous year.

Chinese tourism in Thailand’s resort city of Pattaya
Subscribe to our YouTube channel for free here:
Pattaya, a city on the Gulf of Thailand some 150km (93 miles) south of the capital Bangkok, is a popular tourist destination. Despite its shady “Sin City” reputation, Pattaya has been drawing a growing number of Chinese tourists over the past decade. Visitors on organised tours and a new breed of independent Chinese tourists have added Pattaya’s famous “ladyboy” shows as well as sun-filled day trips to neighbouring islands to their holiday to-do lists. Even last year’s ferry boat accident in Phuket, where 47 Chinese tourists died, had only a limited impact on Pattaya’s local tourism industry. Pattaya saw the number of Chinese visitors decline briefly before it was on the rise again.

Relief News Update from Japan - 22 May 2011
Supreme Master Ching Hai International Association relief news update from Japan.
Recent data has revealed that Japan's economy declined even more than expected following the deadly March 11 disaster with a recession that has emerged, disrupting production and prompting decreases in spending.
Although cost has not been specifically identified as a factor in caring for animals, their situation has also become increasingly dire, especially within the 20-kilometer mandatory evacuation zone surrounding the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear plant.
As no one can regularly enter to feed them due to radiation concerns, the Japanese government announced plans to slaughter some 675,000 chickens and other domesticated farm animals in the region.
In addition to the sad losses resulting from such actions, there are still thousands more animal companions such as dogs that are unaccounted for, many who have already died of starvation.
Some groups such as the US-based Hachiko Coalition have called for Prime Minister Kan's office to conduct an organized evacuation of both companion and farm animals.
Apart from the initial donation of US$ 80,000, which, combined with contributions from our Association members, totals over US$172,000 for the Japan quake and tsunami victims,in response to the pressing need to save these innocent beings, Supreme Master Ching Hai additionally donated US$10,000 to the Coalition Headquarters for the Relief of Animals in Emergencies (HRAE), comprising four organizations: Japan Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (JSPCA), Japan Animal Welfare Society, Japan Pet Care Association, and Japan Veterinary Medical Association.
Our Association members went to speak with the chief of HRAE and chairman of JSPCA, Mr. Shiro Nakagawa, who spoke of their efforts.
Shiro Nakagawa, Chief of the Headquarters for the Relief of Animals in Emergencies, Chairman of Japan Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (M): I think that perhaps there are over 100 animals in a shelter now. I do not know the exact number, but I am sure that a considerable number of
animals are from the stricken areas of Fukushima prefecture.
Because such psychological care is so important, our organization equips professionals of this field including veterinarians, animal care specialists, and trimmers. And they are teaming up now to establish a system for animal care.
VOICE: Along with Supreme Master Ching Hai's donation, the Association members presented the coalition with the Japanese edition of Supreme Master Ching Hai's #1 international bestselling books The Dogs in My Life, The Birds in My Life and The Noble Wilds, as well as her DVDs.
Mr. Shiro Nakagawa (M): Oh, how wonderful! Thank you. Thank you very much.
VOICE: In response, HRAE wished to present a letter of appreciation to Supreme Master Ching Hai.
Mr. Shiro Nakagawa (M): We deeply appreciate your constant love and compassion for animals. We would like to express our gratitude from the bottom of our heart for your generosity in donating the money for our animal rescue operation to relieve animals affected by this Eastern Japan Earthquake.
The current situation is that many animals still need to be relieved, so we are going to utilize your donation and make further efforts so that we can match your expectation. We look forward to an association with you in future as a good friend and steward of animals. Thank you very much.Mr. Shiro Nakagawa,Chief of
the Headquarters for the Relief of Animals in Emergencies
VOICE: Our deep appreciation, Coalition Headquarters for the Relief of Animals in Emergencies and all other concerned groups and individuals, for your compassionate endeavors to help the vulnerable animals, as we also thank Supreme Master Ching Hai for her thoughtful contribution and care. We pray for the protection of all Japanese residents, humans and animals alike, as we strive to alleviate such tragic events through our lifestyles of greater kindness.

〈漫步、臺北、美景〉Wander Taipei Fantasy
Wander Taipei Fantasy is designed and created by the creative team of Department of Design, National Taiwan Normal University; it is a series of models of Taipei cityscape that is in miniature and realistic representation, which is somewhat fantastic and exaggerating as well. Through foregrounding the landmarks of the twelve administrative districts in Taipei City, the work draws out audience’s general impression of Taipei City. On the other hand, the colorless and white models refer to the fact that if a city lacks memories, it is as though the city has never existed; or they resemble some empty and whitewashed concrete fortresses with decomposed corpses, or remind audience of exquisite specimen and luxurious products in shop windows. When the projection begins to move, sounds and colors start to flow in and through the white city, which symbolizes people’s gaze animates all kinds of memory in the city. Therefore, this seemingly objective world is given a different content and interpretation because of the audience’s pause and imagination. Here, everyone is able to freely “take in and enjoy the encounter with the city you call Taipei.”
