Ritsurin Garden (栗林公園) is one of the most famous historical gardens in Japan. The garden is situated in the city of Takamatsu and is considered one of its main attractions. The garden contains a tea house, various folk art and craft exhibits (including the Sanuki Folk Craft Museum), as well as various folk art and craft items for sale.
The buildings in the garden date back to the early 17th century. In 1625, the feudal lord of Takamatsu in Sanuki Province, Ikoma Takatoshi (生駒高俊), began construction of Ritsurin, specifically the building of a garden around the South Pond using the beautiful greenery of Mt. Shiun (Purple Cloud Mountain) as a backdrop. Beginning in 1642, Matsudaira Yorishige (松平頼重) took over the area and continued its construction. The work was completed by the Fifth Lord Yoritaka in 1745 after 100 years of improvements and extensions made by the successive lords. After the new Meiji government requisitioned the garden, it was designated a prefectural garden and opened to the public on 16 March 1875. In 1953, the garden was designated a Special Place of Scenic Beauty (日本の特別名勝 Nihon no Tokubetsu Meishō).

KAZUKI TAKAMATSU : THE WAY TO RELEASE FROM THE RESTRAINT
A new film by Eric Minh Swenson.
Corey Helford Gallery (CHG) was first established in 2006 by Jan Corey Helford and her husband, television producer and creator, Bruce Helford (Anger Management, The Drew Carey Show, George Lopez,The Oblongs) and has since evolved into one of the premier galleries of New Contemporary art. Its goals as an institution are the support and growth of young and emerging, to well-known and established artists, the production and promotion of their artwork, and the general production of their exhibits, events and projects.
CHG represents a diverse collection of international artists, primarily influenced by today’s pop culture and collectively encompassing style genres such as New Figurative Art, Pop Surrealism, Neo Pop, Graffiti and Street Art, and Post-Graffiti. The gallery has exhibited at important art fairs including SCOPE Miami Beach, SCOPE New York, LA Art Fair, and more. In 2010, CHG also partnered with Bristol’s City Museum & Art Gallery for the transatlantic collaboration “Art From The New World,” a world-class United Kingdom museum exhibition, showcasing work by a celebrated group of today’s most notable American artists. After nine years in Culver City, CHG re-located in December 2015 to a robust 12,000 sq. ft. building in Downtown Los Angeles, where it continues to host exhibitions within the heart of the city’s art community. The current space boasts three separate galleries, each of which house individual artist and group exhibitions, whereas the main gallery offers 4,500 sq. ft., providing total immersion for its attendees. New exhibitions are presented approximately every four weeks.

Takamatsu Shopping Arcade is the long, covered shopping street from Takamatsu Castle to Ritsurin Koen. Known in Japanese as a shotengai, these shopping streets consisting of small family businesses were an important part of life in Japan in the past. Said to be the longest covered shopping arcade in Japan, Takamatsu Shopping Arcade is nearly 2.7 kilometer in length.
With the passage of time, more and more shopping arcades in Japan are moving away from small family businesses to large corporate chain stores. The northern end of the Takamatsu Shopping Arcade (near Takamatsu Castle) was been redeveloped into an upscale shopping plaza with tenants such as Louis Vuitton and Coach. Hungry visitors best visit Lion Dori, a street running parallel to the main shopping street. Here visitors will find an array of eateries, including places which serve the local delicacy, Sanuki Udon.

Garden of Unearthly Delights - Hisashi Tenmyouya
Garden of Unearthly Delights: Works by Ikeda, Tenmyouya & teamLab
Friday, October 10 — Sunday, January 11
Born in 1966 in Tokyo, Hisashi Tenmyouya initially worked as an art director at a record music company. He later began his career as a self-taught fine artist. While utilizing a technique of traditional Japanese-style painting (Nihonga), he incorporates genre motifs of contemporary society and street culture. He calls this unique style Neo Nihonga.
Neo Nihonga draws inspirations and motifs of artistic expressions from across the world and imbues in it a strong degree of contemporaneity, social consciousness, and critical thinking. In recent years, Tenmyouya has expanded his artistic approach to include extravagant and dynamic aestheticism of the samurai-termed basara (“outlaw culture”) that, he believes, underlies Japanese culture throughout its long history, reaching beyond the stereotypically more subdued and austere images of Japan according to the notions of wabi, sabi, and Zen.
Some of the major group exhibitions in which Tenmyouya has participated include: Kawanabe Kyōsai and Tenmyouya Hisashi, Kawanabe Kyōsai Memorial Museum, Saitama Prefecture, Japan (2002); The American Effect—Global Perspective on the United States, 1990–2003, Whitney Museum of American Art, New York, US (2003); Berlin-Tokyo/Tokyo-Berlin: The Art of Two Cities, Berlin, Germany (2006); The 17th Biennale of Sydney, Sydney, Australia (2010); Bye Bye Kitty!!! Between Heaven and Hell in Contemporary Japanese Art, Japan Society Gallery, New York, US (2011), among many others.
His works are in the public collections of The Museum of Fine Arts, Houston, Texas, US; Chazen Museum of Art, Madison, Wisconsin, US; and Takamatsu City Museum of Art, Takamatsu, Kagawa Prefecture, Japan.

NAOSHIMA & TESHIMA JAPAN (1/2) • EXPLORING JAPAN'S ART ISLANDS
Located deep in the inland Seto sea of Japan, a few friends & I ventured out to the former fishing village islands which have become beautiful destinations for contemporary art in recent years.
Using Takamatsu as a base, we ventured around Naoshima, Teshima, Inujima & Shodoshima to cover as much as we could with about 4 full days + 2 half-ish days.
Here’s a recap of the museums we visited and the way we planned our trip / budgets - the islands are such a nice break away from city life and just so relaxing to bike around and wander.
This covers the first 3 days of the trip (mainly Naoshima & Teshima islands) with the part 2 vid to follow soon (covering Inujima & Shodoshima)!
Photos/videos don’t do these islands justice - these islands have so much to offer and have to be first handedly experienced!
