5 Best & Worst Things About Tuscany, Italy - Florence, Siena and Pisa
There are SO many great things about traveling in Italy, but also a few negative things - and some things that are great to keep in mind before you go there. After being in Tuscany for about a month, I'm sharing my 5 best & worst things about Tuscany.
I hope you can get a few tips and tricks to enjoy your stay there even more. My favorite things include - amongst other things - taking a cooking class and seeing the inside of the leaning tower in Pisa, and some of the worst things - in my opinion - are traffic and siesta.

Siena, Tuscany walking tour on east side
We’re going to take you on an extensive walk in little lanes in the residential neighborhoods on the east side of town strolling along via di Pantaneto which is the eastern extension that main lane, via Banchi di Sotto, which later changes names again to Via Roma. In this neighborhood you'll find the Siena University, one of the first in Europe when it was established in the year 1240. And naturally you'll find quite a few young people here and inexpensive restaurants, and a very casual kind of atmosphere. Even though Siena is a historical town, almost an outdoor museum, it's very much a residential community as it has been for about 1000 years. The dog has a right to walk freely because, well, he's at a street called Dog and Cat. The little alleys are called vicolo, and they are charming and quiet and peaceful places to live. It's really quite amazing how the Italians figured this out hundreds of years ago, in fact the way the cities developed in the Middle Ages often made more sense than the way we develop today, with our massive traffic congestions and remote suburban sprawl. Here you've got a compact town with lots of people living together in pretty high density, and yet you have quiet little lanes like this that would be a wonderful place to live. And then around the corner in easy walking distance you've got your shops, your piazza, you've got the church, you've got schools nearby – everything you need is in easy walking distance. Take advantage of this excellent historic preservation because it presents a golden opportunity for some extensive walking in the many little back alleys. Casual strolls could easily keep you busy for several hours. There is so much more to see in this town beyond the major sites. Exploring off the beaten track, away from the tourist centers and shopping streets, can be a very rewarding experience for the intrepid traveler. And to help navigate through these winding pedestrian lanes – you might get a little lost but there are usually street names up on the buildings, and get a good map. It’s a small town, so you can’t get too lost. And if you should get disoriented while you’re out walking, that’s a great excuse to stop a local and ask them for some directions. You might even get into a friendly conversation. A view of the Church of San Giorgio. We are down at the Piazza del Mercato, the ancient market square which still today has outdoor produce market several times a week. Otherwise it's kind of a parking lot surrounded by very old pastel colored residential buildings. This Mercato is a lovely nook of the city, just two blocks south of the Campo, the main busy square, and yet 95% of the visitors never get here. On the map you'll see the approximate route. We have just been walking along that main lane, via di Pantaneto, via Roma. And now we're going to continue walking on other nearby lanes, especially Giglio and Rossi, and various alleys that will lead us there and take us around. For those travelers who love to get away from the shops and stroll through quiet residential alleys, Siena offers many more possibilities. These little byways are your gateway to enter the authentic side of Siena. You can get free information from the official tourist office while you're there and they have brochures that will help you find your way. They outline various walks that you can take on your own, and also available as downloads from their website. The name of that official tourist office website is enjoysiena.it and it's got different itineraries suggested for you – if you have three days they've got an outline, or two days, or three hours, or one day. But something you don't find even on their website or in the tourist guide books are these simple little residential neighborhoods and yet this can be a most rewarding part of your visit. The church of San Francisco was first built from the year 1228 and expanded from the original Romanesque into the larger Gothic style we see now in the 14th and 15th centuries. The vast interior could handle large crowds of the faithful. We are finishing up our tour of Siena with a stroll along another wonderful lane, via dei Rossi, which leads back to the main street, via Banchi di Sopra, and from there you can find your own way home. A typical but unusual for you site that you'll run into is somebody twirling a flag around. They are practicing because this is one of the great traditions of Siena. They'll put on a performance at various festivals and parades in full costume. We are going to leave you with images of these young lads practicing their rituals that have been handed down for 1000 years in Siena – a wonderful look into the future with the young generation carrying on traditions that are been hammered out over countless centuries.

SIENA GUIDES part 3: 5 secrets of Siena you won't find on travel guides | TIPS TO TRAVEL IN ITALY
Hi, I am Ero! Siena is a beautiful italian city in the heart of tuscany, famous for its medieval cityscape, delicious cuisine and principally, the Palio, a horse race held twice a year, every year, in the main square, Piazza del Campo, an ancient tradition that is famous all over Italy and also abroad. Siena has lots of very beautiful places to visit, including the Duomo and Piazza del Campo, which of course you will end up seeing if you follow a common tourist guide as you are visiting the city. However, beside the touristy stuff and places, Siena hides a number of small but very interesting secrets, mostly notorious only to the people that live there. I have lived in Siena for a few years, and in my time here I have learned a lot about lots of these secrets and I made this video (and another one, check out ) to share with you these secrets. I am sure that they will be very useful when you visit Siena, or that they will convince you to come here and visit. Enjoy and let me know if you have any other questions. Also, if you visit Siena I will be happy to guide you through the city to see these secrets.
SECRETS:
00:38 THE WOLF STATUES: Siena is full of wolf statues (for example, in piazza del campo, in piazza della postierla, infront of palazzo tolomei, in the cortile del podesta, the two ones infront of the duomo and the one inside of the duomo, and others), however the wolf is notoriously the symbol of Rome, so why are they here? the legend says that one of the two founders of Rome, Remo, before being killed by his brother Romolo, had two children: Senio and Ascanio. After the death of their father, Senio and Ascanio ran away from Rome riding a black and a white horse that were provided by the gods Apollo and Diana, bringing the wolf that fed their father. They reached a hill and founded there Siena, that took the name of the older brother Senio. So, the wolf and a black and white flag became symbols of Siena. The roman and senese wolves can be distinguished by the fact that the roman one looks left, and the senese one looks forward.
01:45 THE HEADS OF PALAZZO SPANNOCHI: They are a row of heads at the top of a palace in Piazza Salimbeni, Palazzo Spannocchi. These heads were placed here in 1473, when the palace was built by the rich merchant Ambrogio Spannocchi, and represent faces of roman emperors and other illustrious characters, including Dante Alighieri
02:26 THE DAMA IGNUDA: It's a statue of a naked white woman looking outside from the window, in Via dei Rossi 123. This statue is called La Dama Ignuda and was made by the sculptor Pier Luigi Olla in 1995. The florentine commander Giangiacomo medici in 1555 led the Medici army in the conquest of Siena, and this statue represents a young woman that he took from Siena as a prize for himself (the girls is MARTINA VALENTI )
03:07 PIA DE' TOLOMEI'S STONE TAG: This one is definitely my favourite secret! It's a stone tag on the side of Palazzo Tolomei (in Piazza Tolomei), showing a verse of Dante's Divine comedy that says Ricorditi di me, che son la Pia; Siena mi fé, disfecemi Maremma that means remember me, I am Pia; Siena made me, Maremma destroyed me. Dante here is talking about Pia de' Tolomei's story (watch the video to discover it).
04:26 THE CONTRADA FOUNTAINS: They are 17 fountains sparse all over Siena, which represent the symbols of the Contradas. For more details watch my video about the contrada fountains:

Tuscan Truffle Hunting Tour in San Miniato details:
- The pickup time was at 10 am in front of the National Library which was an easy 15 min walk from our AirBNB.
- I booked the excursion online. The excursion costs 350 euros for two people.
- Came with a 3 course lunch with truffles and wine tasting
- If you have a car and just want to join the truffle hunting, you can do that. There was a couple in our tour that drove here themselves. They said they found them online and booked it on their own. - I also read that leaving from the San Miniato train station takes about a 15 minute taxi ride that costs €25 each way. It takes about 30 minutes to take the train from Florence.
- DO BORROW their boots because the forest is often muddy.
- October and November has the best climate for truffle hunting. Although I'm here in October, today wasn't the best climate for truffle hunting because it wasn't cold and wet enough.
Truffle Hunting Dog Details!
In Italy, the use of pigs has been prohibited since 1985. The pigs dig into the ground looking for truffles and harms the entire truffle ecosystem in the process. With dogs, they can smell the truffle and alert their owners. The owner then carefully digs up the truffle and then closes the hole back up for future truffles to grow back. Dogs like Choco cost up to $10,000 US!
Next stop: wine tasting!
This winery started in 1535. They not only produce wines - they also produce olives. They breed Cinta Senese to produce salami and prosciutto. Cinta Senese is a breed of Italian pig from the province of Siena, in Tuscany. They also produce honey and produce and everything is organic!
The big barrels can be reused for 15 to 16 years. These barrels are huge! The big barrow gives the wine a freshness and fruitier taste. The small barrels are only used for 3 years. After 3 years the barrel absorbs too much wine to be reused.
The green glass on top of the barrel allows the gas created by fermentation to escape while not allowing air back in. This cool contraption was invented by Leonardo Da Vinci.
After the tour we got to taste their wines along with some salami and prosciutto. They add fennel seeds into the salami. It was very good!
Why does Florence, Italy bread have no salt?
The bread made in this region of Italy has no salt added. I didn't know that as it was my first time trying saltless bread. I'll have to admit I like my bread with some sodium. Bread from Tuscany and Florentine and maybe some other places near by don't add salt to their bread. There are many reasons for this: I don't know which one is true. But here goes: salt used to be heavily taxed so to save some money they stopped adding salt to their bread. Another reason is during war between Pisa and Florence the Pisan army set up a blockade on the Arno River to prevent salt shipments from reaching Florence. Without salt, bakers just continued baking their bread without the salt. Last reason is Tuscan cuisine tend to be on the saltier side so the bread is to help eat the salty food.
Final STOP: Plaza Michelangelo. He was willing to drop us off there instead so we can catch the sunset.
It was nice because this place was on my list to visit and it saved me a hike up the hill to get there.
The view up here is amazing! You can see the entire city of Florence from here. It was a bit cloudy to see the sunset, but it was still very nice.
