Shinkansen Bullet Train. JR Odawara to Tokyo, Japan - Mt Fuji Views
Japan's world famous Shinkansen Bullet Train. My journey from JR Odawara Station (near Mt Fuji) to Tokyo Central Station. Mt Fuji views en route. A bit of train spotting at Odawara Station, highlights of the journey and Tokyo Railway Station at night. Very enjoyable journey...

Shinkansen 700 pass-Odawara Station (2003)
Tripod view of a Shinkasen 700 Series train passing through Odawara Station at high speed. While touring Japan in 2003, I wanted to see what high speed rail looks like up close. I took a non-express train to Odawara and waited. The train's headlights appeared way off in the distance, then before you know it the train would zip by. Notice the non-express train rocking after the flyby! I'm posting this on the day California broke ground for its statewide high speed rail system (01/07/15). Shinkansen bullet trains have been operating in Japan since 1964.

The Shinkansen is a network of high-speed railway lines in Japan operated by four Japan Railways Group companies. Starting with the Tōkaidō Shinkansen (515.4 km) in 1964 the network has expanded to currently consist of 2,387.7 km (1,483.6 mi) of lines with maximum speeds of 240–320 km/h (150–200 mph), 283.5 km (176.2 mi) of Mini-shinkansen lines with a maximum speed of 130 km/h (80 mph), and 10.3 km (6.4 mi) of spur lines with Shinkansen services. The network presently links most major cities on the islands of Honshu and Kyushu, with construction of a link to the northern island of Hokkaido underway.
The maximum operating speed is 320 km/h (200 mph) (on a 387.5 km section of the Tōhoku Shinkansen). Test runs have reached 443 km/h (275 mph) for conventional rail in 1996, and up to a world record 581 km/h (361 mph) for maglev trains in 2003.
Shinkansen literally means new trunk line, referring to the high-speed rail line network. The name Superexpress (超特急 chō-tokkyū?), initially used for Hikari trains, was retired in 1972 but is still used in English-language announcements and signage.
The Tōkaidō Shinkansen is the world's busiest high-speed rail line. Carrying 151 million passengers per year (March 2008), it has transported more passengers (over 5 billion, entire network over 10 billion) than any other high-speed line in the world. Between Tokyo and Osaka, the two largest metropolises in Japan, up to thirteen trains per hour with sixteen cars each (1,323-seat capacity) run in each direction with a minimum headway of three minutes between trains. Though largely a long-distance transport system, the Shinkansen also serves commuters who travel to work in metropolitan areas from outlying cities. Japan's Shinkansen network had the highest annual passenger ridership (a maximum of 353 million in 2007) of any high-speed rail network until 2011, when China's high-speed rail network surpassed it at 370 million passengers annually.

[Update] Sorry I must apologize that I made a mistake in the subtitle; subtitle at 0:03' this 1st train should read as to Tokyo 東京行 , at 0:22' this 2nd train should read as to Shin-Aomori / Akita 新青森/秋田行. Sorry for the stupid mistake I must be too sleepy when editing this video...
**Turn on the volume!!**
Video taken at Mizusawaesashi Station, featuring two E5 Hayabusa + E6 Komachi Super Express trains passing through the station at about 310km/h while running on the JR East Tohoku/Akita Shinkansen (Bullet Train).
The 1st pass in this video is a South bound train going back to Tokyo; while the 2nd pass in video is a North bound train towards Shin-Aomori (for Hayabusa) and Akita (for Komachi).
The 10 cars E5 Series Hayabusa Super Express train will decouple with the 7 cars E6 Series Komachi Super Express train at Morioka Station as they go seperate way. Basically all Komachi services on return from Akita, will couple with a Hayabusa train at Morioka again, before running back to Tokyo.
The total 17 cars E5 + E6 Series Shinkansen train is 401.65m long. In the video both trains passed by in about 4.6sec, that's about 310km/h. The normal max operating speed of E5/E6 Series is 320km/h on Tohoku Shinkansen.
Hayabusa and Komachi Super Express Shinkansen tain services do not stop at Mizusawaesashi Station on Tohoku Shinkansen; only Yamabiko Super Express trains will stop at this station.
Waiting for Shinkansen
We were in Tokyo waiting for a Shinkansen bound for Sendai. (We were on a trip to Nikko)
Then it arrived. Before we could enter the cleaners squad was sent out on a mission to clean the mess before it was ready for passangers to board.
All of us had a tourist JR pass which was like 50% cheaper than common one, and it could be obtained only outside of Japan and exclusively only to foreigners. Later during our trip, we met our japanese colleagues from company i work for, and you can imagine the look on their faces when they found out that we were travelling using Shinkansen as if it was some ordinary Japanese Railway train from one village to another and so cheap on top of that. Only then i felt the true weight of privilege.

Kitakami, Japan - Kitakami Station (2019)
Kitakami Station (北上駅 Kitakami-eki) is a railway station in the city of Kitakami, Iwate, Japan, operated by the East Japan Railway Company (JR East), with a freight terminal operated by the Japan Freight Railway Company (JR Freight).
Kitakami Station is served by the Tōhoku Shinkansen high-speed line from Tokyo to Shin-Aomori, and also by local services on the Tōhoku Main Line and Kitakami Line. It is located 487.5 kilometers from the starting point of the Tōhoku Main Line at Tokyo Station[1] and is also a terminus for the Kitakami Line.
The shinkansen platforms in September 2009
The local portion of Kitakami Station has an island platform and a single side platform. However, the side platform is cut, forming a partial bay platform, so that the platform effectively serves two tracks. The Tōhoku Shinkansen portion of the station has an island platform and a single side platform serving three tracks. All of the platforms are elevated. The station has a Midori no Madoguchi staffed ticket office.
Odawara Shinkansen - 小田原新幹線
I had the chance to about an hour at the Odawara station along the JR Tokaido Shinkansen line between Tokyo and Nagoya and watch the bullet trains fly by...well, except for the Kodama and some Hikari service trains, which pull over to let the faster express and Nozomi trains pass.
Everything is tightly choreographed - if a Kodama pulls in and stops, you know one or two faster trains will zip by before its let back out on the main to continue.
The 16-car N700 trainsets are huge, with up to 1,323 seats arranged in 3-2 configuration in regular class and 2-2 in the Green class. Considering that they run on 4-min. headways at peak times, they can move a lot of people pretty quickly! The capacity for Tokyo-Osaka is 342 departures and avg. 424,000+ psrgs/day.
I'm not quite sure how fast the trains are going through here - I'm guessing 145 mph or so through Odawara, but since the N700s are wide (11 ft) and low, they don't seem to be moving as fast on camera as they feel like in person. They operate at 285 km/h (177 mph) max. in regular service.
