Cruising Alaska Haines
Hey Cruisers, Today we are going to take a look at a port rich with Tlingit culture and history and well known for the bald eagle population, and it just may be one of our favorite stops in Alaska. We are talking about Haines, and if you're lucky enough to visit Haines on your cruise vacation, you’re likely to quickly fall in love with the charm and natural beauty here. Heading off the dock the first stop is this handy map perfect for a few snapshots and directions.
Just off the dock, Orca Gifts is a great stop for souvenirs or a quick snack.
Just steps away from the ship, you'll see a Decommissioned military outpost called Fort Seward. The Fort turned into a national landmark, and as you wander here, you'll get a sense of being transported to a very different time.
Haines is a terrific place for a nature walk, and if you like taking photos, there are tons of scenic spots very close to ship. You can take some beautiful shots with the ship in the background.
If you venture on a little further following the curve around to the harbor you’ll have even more awesome photo ops. This sign makes a wonderful background.
Just up the hill from the harbor is the Sheldon Museum and Cultural Center, a nice place to learn more about Haines. Across the street you’ll find one of many inviting shops. Haines’ shops and restaurants have a downhome unspoiled feel. If you are looking for truly distinctive souvenirs, then you’ll definitely want to check out some of these shops. Here’s look at just some of what you’ll find. Haines is unlike most of your other port stops - you won't find large chain jewelry shops and big retail here. These are locally owned shops with incredibly cordial locals, and some truly unique items. And speaking of unique, how about the Hammer Museum? Stop in if you have time. It’s surprisingly fascinating.
If you're looking for some exercise and an incredible way to see Haines first hand, stop by and talk to our friends at Sockey Cycle. You can bike to cannery cove, pedal through town, and explore the nearby beauty, and yeah, maybe burn off a few buffet calories. Another great option for scenic adventure is the Takshanuk Mountain Trail by 4x4 excursion. These vehicles are super fun, and a great way to see the natural beauty of this area. There are some awe-inspiring views on this trip you just won’t see on other excursions.
Exploring Haines - Alaskan Adventure Part 7
After their 4x4 adventure on the Takshanuk Mountain Trail, Katie and Trey explore Haines, Alaska. HAINES, ALASKA
The Alaska we all dream about: real, authentic and unashamed. Haines, Alaska is like no other destination. With fascinating history, intriguing culture, breathtaking scenery and adventure to last a lifetime, there’s no question that the time you spend when you visit Haines will be enjoyed and remembered for years to come.
Haines boasts year round fun for the entire family, located along the edge of North America's longest and deepest fjord, just 68 nautical miles north of Juneau in Southeast Alaska. Craggy mountain peaks tower above a lush coastal rainforest with temperate seasons that call to the adventurer in all of us. Fill the long daylight hours of summer with a rafting trip, a deep-sea halibut fishing charter, or a hike through an ancient spruce forest. Visit museums dedicated to our earliest residents, the Native Tlingit people, and a national favorite, the American Bald Eagle. And if your still up for more, explore gold rush era Fort William H. Seward, or find yourself alone at the end of a rocky beach trail.
No matter where your interests lie you can be assured to find something truly amazing in Haines. Whatever you chose, there won't be enough time to do it all.

Chilkat Bald Eagle Preserve Rafting Tour - Haines, Alaska
Upon arrival in Haines, meet your expert guide and enjoy a riverside drive along the Haines Highway. The drive is incredibly scenic: glacier-clad mountains thrust to the sky, colorful wildflowers line the road, green riverside channels provide habitat for moose, bear and trumpeter swans. The highway was declared a National Scenic Byway in 2009. Arrive at the river in the heart of the Chilkat Bald Eagle Preserve, approximately 40 minutes away.
After boarding your raft, enjoy a scenic float down the Chilkat River through the famous Chilkat Bald Eagle Preserve, home of the world's largest concentration of Bald Eagles. You are immersed in the Alaskan wilderness, floating the silent river. As there are no rapids (white water) on the river, it makes for a very relaxing float. Depending on the flow of the river, the float portion lasts about 1 1/2 hours.
Along the way, your professional guide will explain the natural history of the area, Chilkat Indian Heritage, and share some exciting stories from life in the Alaskan wilderness. The number of eagles you will see is dependent on the food available to the eagles (i.e. the fish runs). During the early months of the summer season you will often see parent eagles sitting on nests, eaglets in nests and the parent eagles flying to the nest with food for their young. Thousands of bald eagles travel here to feed on salmon in the fall and winter. During very warm days, the eagles are often seen catching the thermals and soaring above the mountain peaks.
Paddling is not required, as your expert guide will push the raft along, explaining the intricate balance of nature that makes this a unique and special place. Don't leave your camera behind for this adventure!

Wildlife of Haines Alaska
This footage was taken over a few days while fishing for Pink and Sockeye Salmon in the Chilkoot River in Haines, Alaska. The salmon run brings all kinds of wildlife to the riverbank to feed on the delicious and nutritious tough guys - grizzly's, eagles, ravens, seals and of course humans. Sharing the river with wildlife, a balance of respect and sustainability is important, especially when it comes to the grizzly's!
One bear, the lone bear seen eating fish in the river toward the second half of the video, is an old friend of mine. BMJ is 29 years old now (born the same year as me) and I remember seeing her over several years, sometimes with a cub or three. She has had over 9 cubs in her lifetime but I don't think many have survived due to tourists claiming them to be a nuisance when they have gotten into fish coolers. Sadly the solution was to kill them because they had gotten used to feeding themselves this way and weren't able to fish for themselves. Apparently the last couple of cubs did survive due to rangers efforts to minimize contact between bears and humans. Typically grizzly's live to be between 20-30 years old in the wild. I hope she lives out the last few years in peace after losing so many of her babies.

TRUCK CAMPER LIFE: SEARCHING for GRIZZLY BEARS in HAINES ALASKA // CtW S1:E35
Haines, Alaska is one of the best places to (safely) view grizzly bears in all of the state. While grizzlies are common all throughout Alaska, sometimes it takes a little more effort to spot them when you want to.
We traveled for over 6 weeks through Alaska without seeing a grizzly bear! We had seen every other kind of animal we wanted - moose, elk, salmon, sea lions, sea otters, bald eagles, bison, fox and even porcupine!
But as our journey to Alaska was coming to an end, we still had not seen a grizzly bear!
Join us in our adventure as we leave Valdez (and Alaska, for the first time) and make the long drive to Haines, Alaska to wait for the perfect opportunity to see grizzly bears in the wild!
