wood carving & painting of alebrijes - Oaxaca, Mexico
The alebrijes are made from carved copal wood and hand painted with complex patterns. The brightly colored folk art sculptures depicting fantastical creatures are a popular handicraft made in the valley surrounding Oaxaca.
The alebrijes range from small coffee-cup sized pieces to major table top museum quality sculptures, and are designed as recognizable animals, including rabbits, lizards, coyotes and bulls. Others are fanciful creatures, like devils and dragons. All are cleverly carved and intricately painted with a multitude of bright and vivid natural pigments colors.
Here at the workshop of Jacobo and Maria Angeles in San Martin Tilcajete located in Oaxaca, Mexico a large courtyard introduces the artists craving and painting under the shade of lush Copal branches. There are shelves filled with carved, but unpainted, animals, figures and fantasy creatures, and tables where dozens of artists prep and paint the carvings. Adjacent is a large showroom filled with finished artwork for sale.

OAXACA, MEXICO is our new FAVORITE!!
Oaxaca is extraordinary! We're going behind the scenes to learn about alebrijes, black pottery, & more!

This video is Part 2 of our Oaxaca, Mexico video series. In this travel vlog, we visit three special towns just outside of Oaxaca City:
1. San Bartolo Coyotepec, Oaxaca
2. San Martín Tilcajete, Oaxaca
3. Santo Tomás Jalieza, Oaxaca
First, we went to San Bartolo Coyotepec to see a live demonstration of traditional Oaxacan pottery making. We learn how the clay is harvested, molded, refined, carved, and cooked in underground ovens to create either black or brown pottery. The work that goes into each piece is astonishing!
Next, we drove to San Martin Tilcajete where we visited the famous alebrijes workshop of Jacobo and Maria Angeles. Disney Pixar actually came to this exact location while doing research for the movie Coco. It blew our minds to learn how laborious the process of making alebrijes is. People come to this workshop from all over the world to learn how to be a master at carving and painting Oaxaca alebrijes.
Before heading to our last stop, we enjoyed our tour guide’s “car bar” where we sampled some of their very own mezcal. Spoiler alert: Oaxacan Mezcal is SO GOOD!
Finally, we drove down the road to Santo Tomas Jalieza to learn how intricate, hand-woven textiles are made. We learned that it’s common for one piece to take 3, 7-hour days (21 hours total) to create just one!
It’s hard not to LOVE Oaxaca, Mexico after learning more about its culture. The patience, dedication, and love that all of these artisans have for their craft is inspiring. After spending one week in Oaxaca, we can safely say that it’s become one of our all-time favorite places in Mexico. Don't forget to subscribe to our channel to see our next Oaxaca video!

A Bowl is not a Bowl: Diego Mier y Terán and Kythzia Barrera at TEDxDIS
A bowl is a bowl, but it is also a container of relations. Just like any other objetc, a bowl is a container of historic, economic, social, cultural, environmental and spiritual relations that conform a way of living. A bowl, made of clay in the hills of Oaxaca, challenges the way we think about design, our society and life in general. For those willing to listen, a bowl also provides answers to our civilization's deepest questions.

-Arte Resistencia- Documental Social // Comunicación Audiovisual I

Comunidades que crean y agitan museos / Communities Can Shape/Shake Museums
Deborah L. Mack, Cesáreo Moreno, Karima Grant, Teresa Morales, Esmeralda Ortiz Cuero.
This panel session will describe museums that are created and informed by communities. Presentations will focus on a range of models where communities are both institutional and content curators, founders and funders, co-designers of museum vocations, organizational structures, and missions, and co-evaluators of how effectiveness and success are measured.
