Wonderful music caught unexpectedly during a visit to Tallinn city museum.
KIEK in de KÖK | Artillery Tower | Fortifications Museum | Tallinn
Kiek in de Kök (Low German: Peep into the Kitchen) is an artillery tower in Tallinn, Estonia, built in 1475. It gained the name Kiek in de Kök from the ability of tower occupants to see into kitchens of nearby houses. The tower is 38 m high and has walls 4 m thick. Cannon balls dating back to 1577 are still embedded in its outer walls.
Nowadays, the tower houses a museum that introduces the genesis of Tallinn, its development, as well as the most important war events from the 13th to the 18th century. On the basement floor, there are temporary photography exhibitions; in the armoury, you can explore various weapons and have a go on a shooting simulator. The café on the sixth floor affords one-of-a-kind views of Toompea, the Lower Town and the harbour.

About the Maiden Tower Museum - Tallinna Linnamuuseum
The history of Tallinn begins in 1219 in the Garden of the Danish king in front of the Maiden's Tower. It was here that the action of the legend of Dannebrog - the oldest national flag of Europe - was unfolding. The tower has become an important part of the defense of the city, also the home of celebrities and an art studio, a haunted place, and in 1980 a cafe.
Tallinn Travel Guide - Exploring Unique Estonia
Tallinn Travel Guide - Exploring Unique Estonia
Tallinn , the capital of Estonia, lies on the southern coast of the Gulf of Finland, only 70 km (43 mi) south of Helsinki. At the historical and medieval heart of the city is the hill of Toompea, covered in cobbled streets and filled with medieval houses and alleyways. The lower town spreads out from the foot of the hill, still protected by the remnants of a city wall. Around the city wall is a series of well-maintained green parks, great for strolling.
The city's old town has been astonishingly well preserved and was inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List in 1997, it is now in better shape than ever, with the bigger roads converted into fashionable shopping streets reminiscent of Zürich or Geneva. Especially in summer, the Old Town is packed with tourists, with the traditional daytrippers from Helsinki increasingly supplemented by other Europeans taking advantage of cheap flights.
Alas, the new town sprawling all around is largely built in typical concrete Soviet style, now joined with glass-and-steel cubes celebrating the post-Soviet economic boom. The new centre of town is Vabaduse väljak (Freedom Square) at the edge of the old town, and nearby is the giant matchbox of Hotel Viru.
Tallinn is a historic city dating back to the medieval times and it was first recorded on a world map in 1154, although the first fortress was built on Toompea in 1050. In 1219, the city was conquered by Valdemar II of Denmark, but it was soon sold to the Hanseatic League in 1285. The city, known as Reval at the time, prospered as a trading town in the 14th century, and much of Tallinn's historic center was built at this time.
The Old City is best navigated on foot. A network of buses, trams and trolleybuses covers the rest of the city. There is an abundance of relatively cheap taxis. Before you jump in a random taxi car make sure you check the price on the window of the car. In Tallinn there are more than 20 different taxi companies and some can be a rip-off.
If you are on a day trip to Tallinn for few hours only, then you can walk down to Viru street (10-15 min walk from Ferry Terminal) or take a taxi to get there and then roam the old city on foot. There are some great lookout points, where you can take in spectacular views of the rest of Old Town.
The Old City is packed with restaurants claiming to offer authentic Estonian food, particularly on and around Raekoja plats. Prices at restaurants near the Raekoja Plats are generally more expensive, yet offer the same quality of food, as restaurants off this main square. Prices are steep by Estonian standards, but still much cheaper than neighbouring Helsinki, which explains why on weekends they're always packed with day tripping Finns.
The new neighborhoods on the rise are Kalamaja and Kopli. Here you can find quite a lot of trendy restaurants opened up in old factories and such. There are no touristy restaurants or party pubs but nice, affordable restaurants popular among local people.
Tallinn's Old Town, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is a major tourist attraction; others include the Seaplane Harbour of Estonian Maritime Museum, the Tallinn Zoo, Kadriorg Park, and the Estonian Open Air Museum. Most of the visitors come from Europe, though Tallinn has also become increasingly visited by tourists from Russia and the Asia-Pacific region

Historic Centre (Old Town) of Tallinn, Estonia
Tallinn, the capital of Estonia, dates back about 800 years when the Danes took over the area. Tallinn went on to become a major trading center as part of the Hanseatic League.
Tallinn's historic city center is one of the best preserved fortified medieval cities in Europe. The city walls once featured more than 60 towers; surviving segments of the wall include about two dozen towers.
The Upper Town - Toompea - is home to the castle and cathedral, and has historically been home to the government. The plazas and winding streets of the Lower Town include the historic town hall, churches, museums and a number of shops and restaurants.
Tallinn's Historic Centre (Old Town) is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Tallinn, Estonia - World Heritage site
Tallinn became a city in the 13th century, being under Danish rule.
The name Tallinn comes from Taani Linn, meaning Danish City.
Tallinn became a member of the Hanseatic League at the end of the 13th century, and the city became one of the most important towns in Northern Europe until the mid 16th century, being a strategic trading port town between Western Europe and Russia.

Old Town Days: Tallinn 800
Tallinn Old Town Days 2019
Clips from day 2
Since 1982, the Tallinn Old Town Days signify the beginning of summer in the city. The festival fills the streets with concerts, exhibitions, theatre plays, fairs and many other fun activities.
Each year, the festival centres around a specific topic. In 2019, the theme will be ‘Tallinn 800’, celebrating the first recorded mention of the city of Tallinn in 1219 in the Livonian Chronicle of Henry.
The chronicle describes when the Danish fleet led by King Valdemar II landed near Lindanise castle in June 1219. According to the chronicle, there was a battle at the location of what would become Tallinn on June 15, 1219 where the Danes won a difficult victory. The legend says that luck smiled upon the Danes after a red flag with a white cross fell from the sky — the Danneborg, the state flag of Denmark today
VLOG 25: 10.21.18
Day two in Tallinn!! The first couple of hours we spent looking at souvenirs and spending so much money. We ate lunch at a yummy place called Jahu. Then we saw some pretty churches. We took a tour of the underground bastion passages that was very interesting. In the 80’s concerts were held there, then homeless people lived in them until 2004 when the city decided to figure out what was down there and create the passage into a museum tour. We walked back through old town to St. Olaf’s church and climbed up 260 stairs to walk along the edge of the steeples roof for a breathtaking view.
