Are you looking for a beautiful place to visit in North Georgia? If so, look no further than Tallulah Gorge State Park.
To be honest I didn't know the name of the park was Tallulah Gorge State Park. You see, I'd heard everyone reference the spot we were visiting as Tallulah Falls (if you watch the video below you'll hear me refer to it as Tallulah Falls). That name isn't too far off considering the town where the state park is located is called Tallulah Falls, however there isn't even a waterfall with the same name.

Tallulah Gorge State Park - GA.
21 October 2015
Tallulah Gorge is one of the oldest geological features in North America. Tallulah Gorge State Park is actually owned by Georgia Power and as such is a bit different from the traditional Georgia State Parks. You cannot make an online reservation, all reservations have to be made by phone. There are 50 RV/Tent sites. Also you have to pay by check or cash, no credit cards accepted. The campground is fairly small so restrooms are never far away. All sites have water and electric but no sewer. There is a dump station at the entrance. The fees are actually a bit less than the other official State Parks and there is a discount for Georgia Seniors. The Tallulah River Dam was completed around 1913 and at the time was the third largest power plant in the country. The gorge is about 2 miles long and is one of the deepest on the east coast. Railroads were built back in the 1920s to bring the tourist trade to the area and it's been famous ever since. In 1880, a guy walked across the gorge on a tightrope and Karl Wallenda did it again in 1970. The steel towers and concrete bases are still on site. The gorge is nearly 1,000 feet deep and there is a trail system along both sides. There is a stair system leading to a suspension bridge that crosses the river (80 feet above the river) and another ascending stair system leading back up to the other side. Although only 313 of the 626 steps are going up, they will cause you to pause more than once if you're half my age. The trails are smooth and wide but the stair system involves elevation changes so considerable effort is required. There are many nice overlooks from the trail of the gorge and it's 10 waterfalls.

Exploring Tallulah Gorge
I traveled an hour and a half south of my starting point in Greenville, SC to check out Tallulah Gorge and see what all the hype on the internet was about. If you arrive at the park early you can beat the nightmare of overcrowded scenery with few people far and in between. If you can survive the 750 stairs down to the suspension bridge then another 221 to the Hurricane Falls platform only to come back up 347 steps to the South Rim trail, you will be fine. If you continue to the Tallulah Gorge Bridge, you can cross it and loop back around to the Interpretive Center to avoid hiking back up the obscene amount of stairs (no one informed me). I suggest taking plenty of water, as well as packing a lunch. I overlooked the gorge at the top of the South Rim trail where I enjoyed a peaceful lunch with the soothing sound of the waterfalls in the background. Although, I traveled to Tallulah Gorge State Park to hike the lower falls (which they were not giving out permits at the time due the river being too high) I enjoyed the vast amount of scenery, as well as the outdoor workout. I would definitely recommend this hike, and I can't wait to go back to do the lower falls permit hike.

Tallulah Falls Gorge State Park Georgia. Niagara Falls of the South
Tallulah Falls Gorge State Park, The roar of the falls into this canyon can be heard for miles. 3 miles long and a quarter-mile wide the cliffs drop 1,200 feet to the bottom of the gorge. A white sand beach adorns Tallulah Lake along with a beach and bathhouse. Fishing is nearby as well as picnic shelters, a pavilion, and conference center. Karl Wallenda walked across a high wire over the Gorge in 1970.
