Tangier Island: Among the First U.S. Climate Refugees?
The small island of Tangier sits 12 miles off the coast of Virginia. It’s a peaceful, salt-of-the-earth kind of place, with only 600 full-time residents, most of whom have known their neighbors—commercial crabbers, watermen, schoolteachers, parishioners—for generations. Shortly, however, that may all come to an end.
As soon as 25 years from now, Tangier is expected to disappear into the sea. The people who live there, along with the residents of similar coastal towns and islands threatened by sea-level rise, may become among the first U.S. climate refugees.

Cobb Island Station
Cobb Island Station-the last great Coast Guard facility on the historic barrier islands of the Eastern Shore. Decommissioned in 1964, the station was loaded on a barge by The Nature Conservancy in 1998 and brought to its present setting on Brockenberry Bay at the Village of Oyster where it was restored at a cost of over double the current asking price. Today, Cobb Island Station is impeccably maintained and surrounded by conservation easements. Cobb's waterfront is open to kayaking channels up and down the Barrier Islands with deep water access and the potential for a private dock is available. Offered fully furnished. Bush Mill Stream Natural Area Preserve in Heathsville, Virginia
This small preserve is a great example of an environment that was once very common all over the Chesapeake Bay region: brackish tidal marshes and mud flats where fresh water streams meet the salt water rivers that flow into the Chesapeake Bay. Bush Mill Stream is one of the major tributaries of Great Wicomico River. During America's Colonial Period, ocean going vessels were able to sail up the Great Wicomico to the mouth of Bush Mill Stream to a point known as Deep Landing. Goods like lumber and agricultural products were often transported through this port. Today, changes in water levels in Great Wicomico have made it so that ships can no longer reach Deep Landing.
The preserve is open during day light hours and can be reached and explored on foot via the Deep Landing Trail and Heron Trail. You can also explore the preserve via kayak or canoe. The preserve is located in Northumberland County, on the Northern Neck peninsula of Virginia's eastern Tidewater Region, near the town of Heathsville.
