WONTON NOODLES! Indian Chinese Street Food in CHINATOWN Kolkata India
Ever since arriving in India I was told that I must try some Indian Chinese food which is quite different than the typical Chinese food I've had all my life. So I went to Chinatown in Kolkata India to try some dumplings, noodles and spicy chicken.
The Chinatown in India was not what I expected, mainly because there were not that many Chinese people. Also the food does taste like a very unique mix of Indian and Chinese cuisine.
We first went to Territy Bazar which is in Chinatown and it's a market that is open very very early and closes soon as the food is sold out.

Chinatown Kolkata Tangra | Golden Phoenix Chinese Restaurant & Bar | India's only Chinatown
Chinatown, situated in East Kolkata, is India’s only Chinatown. The first wave of immigration was of the Hakka Chinese in late 18th century, who came to work on a sugar plantation. Mao Zedong’s communist regime and the First World War amongst other events were responsible for continued immigration in the early 1900s. Chinese people have lived in India for almost 230 years and became engaged in manufacturing activities, mainly in tanneries, producing leather goods. They eventually settled in a locality called Tangra.

Even though the heyday of Tangra seems to be in the past, it is still legendary for its authentic Indo-Chinese cuisine. Over the years, disappearing tanneries have metamorphosed into restaurants. Today, Indian-Chinese fare is all-pervasive and can be found in different parts of the world.
The departure of Chinatown from its glorious past marks the loss of a place truly integral to India. You may want to head there soon; it might not be around for too long.

China town in India
Chinatowns the world over, are commercial hubs. Common in Southeast Asia and North America, 'Chintatown' conjures visions of a variety of mouth watering Chinese food. neighbour China in 1960 over a border dispute, also has a Chinatown in Kolkata(Calcutta) Located in the east of the city, in Tangra and Topsia, Kolkata's Chinatown boasted a number of Chinese restaurants and tanneries. The tanneries had to be shifted out of the city to the outskirts to check pollution yielding place to more Chinese restaurants offering a mind boggling variety of Chinese cuisine. The eateries are choc a bloc on most weekends and holidays.
INDIA: CALCUTTA: CHINESE COMMUNITY
Hindi/Nat
The Indian city of Calcutta is home to one of the oldest and most deeply rooted Chinese communities in the world.
Despite meshing closely into Indian society, Calcutta's Chinese have maintained their identity and customs.
But now there are fears that the community is threatened with many of its younger members moving abroad to seek a better life.
The first Chinese immigrant is believed to have arrived in Calcutta around 200 years ago.
Since then, a 20-thousand strong Chinese community has settled around Calcutta's Tangra neighbourhood. Much of their commerce takes place in the so-called China market in Tangra.
The community's cultural heritage continues to flourish in the foreign environment.
Two Chinese newspapers, Yan Thoo Nyit Pao and the hand written Yin Thoo Shan Pao, keep them abreast of the latest news.
As in other parts of the world, Chinese cooking has proved popular with local people and Calcutta is home to a plethora of Chinese restaurants.
Though most of the Chinese community were born in India many of them have to leave the country periodically in order to get their visas renewed.
Many younger Chinese are now opting to stay abroad rather than continue the family business in Calcutta.
SOUNDBITE: (Hindi)
Though we are born in India it pains when we have to go abroad. We have to get a renewal, which takes time, about six to seven months.
SUPER CAPTION: Mrs Lee Layoung, restaurant owner
Calcutta's Chinese community also runs a thriving leather industry. Hides are treated at factories like this and then processed into finished products like leather shoes which are sold in shops throughout the city.
In a climate of tolerance, Chinese Buddhist temples stand side by side with Hindu shrines.
The Indian authorities have allowed the Chinese community to set up special schools where children study their own curriculum.
Though the children study their own language and customs they are also taught the local language. The younger generation is more Indian than Chinese.

Monica Liu: The 'Don' Of Chinatown | Unique Stories from India
Thanks to her, Calcuttans know what Chinese food made by Chinese people tastes like.
When most people look at Monica Liu, they see a smiling restaurant owner in Tangra, Kolkata. But this unassuming grandmother of nine is also known as the Don of Chinatown. Monica Liu owns and runs five authentic Chinese restaurants in Kolkata - Kim Ling & Beijing in Tangra, Tung Fong in Park Street, and branches of her restaurant Mandarin on Sarat Bose Road, and Lake Avenue. She's been awarded the Best Woman Entrepreneur of the Year in 2003.
But Kolkata's woman of steel comes fom humble beginnings. During the Indo-China war in 1962, when Monica was just a child, her entire family was arrested and taken to Deoli Camp, Rajasthan. Finally, it was when Monica and another young boy in the camp wrote a letter to the Home Minister, their release orders were processed. Forgotten for five years in the camp, when the family finally returned to Kolkata, they had lost their home, their friends and almost everything else.
Starting a new life, Monica's mother would make momos to sell to make ends meet. It was from helping her mother every evening that Monica's journey began. Finally, in 1991, she opened Kim Ling, the family's first restaurant. When goons tried to intimidate the family into giving them free food, Monica responded in kind, eventually earning her the title 'Don of Tangra'.
101 Traces looks at the last of anything: ethnic communities, folk craftsmen, disappearing trades, forgotten people. It sketches portraits of these unique individuals, locked in a battle they cannot win: a battle against the future. Together, they represent the dying whispers of ancient heritage and traditional individuality. As India moves towards homogenized global pop culture, 101 Traces honors the people, the objects, and the skills that connect us to our ancient identity.

কেমন আছে কলকাতার চীনারা?। China town | India's only Chinese colony in Kolkata | history

Territy Bazar - AMAZING Chinese Indian Street Food Market in Kolkata
Territy Bazar is an amazing Chinese Indian street food market in Kolkata. When you're in Kolkata, and if you love food, don't miss it!
When I first arrived in Kolkata (Calcutta), I was rather surprised that not much was open earling in the morning. I went out looking for something to eat and could only find a few stalls selling chai and bread, but nothing more substantial to eat for breakfast. So when I heard about the Territy Bazar, that opened very early in the morning and finished at about 10 am, I was excited.
At about 7 am I caught a taxi from Sudder street, where I was staying, to the Territy Bazar in Kolkata - it was about a 10 minute ride or so. The bazar market is located on Sun Yat Sen and not in Chinatown like I had thought it would be. Territy Bazar is a Chinese market, though you'll find all sorts of Indian things there as well, but the main cooked food is all Chinese influenced. Upon arriving, I was just amazed, there were so many different things available and all spread out along the street.
At the entrance there were plenty of vegetable and fruit vendors and as I made my way into the Territy Bazar there was more and more cooked food. My first stop was with a man that was serving steamed dumplings. Though I wanted to eat his boazi, steamed Chinese buns filled with pork, he was out that day and only had fish balls and fried pork momos. Both of what he was serving that day came piping hot and were served with a lovely chili sauce that was delicious. After the momos, I headed over to eat a bowl of soup filled with fish ball on the corner. They even had a small table where you could rest your bowl and eat your soup. Since it was a cold morning in Kolkata, the soup was incredible!
After dining on the delicious Chinese Indian breakfast in Kolkata I took quite a while to browse around the highly interesting Territy Bazar and saw fish vendors, fruit sellers, a crew butchering pigs, and a host of other fresh market vendors. On my way out of the bazar I decided to polish off my delightful Kolkata style breakfast with a fresh coconut. Though it wasn't a very good coconut, it wasn't very sweet, it still was a great finish to a good time at Territy Bazar.
If you visit Kolkata, India, you have to wake up early one morning and head to the bazar for a lot of interesting sights and some good food!
