The Tapiche Reserve is a private conservation property in the northern Peruvian Amazon dedicated to preserving what little primary rain forest is left on earth. This jungle is one of the oldest forested areas on earth, formed over the course of tens of millions of years as the continents shifted. We think it's worth preserving. This is the 2-min intro to our project.
We provide what we believe is the best unforgettable, non-touristy deep jungle experience to visitors from all over the world. Our lodge is completely off the grid, literally in the middle of the jungle. Proceeds from visitors help us maintain the property and provide eco-conscious jobs to local people. Peru Adventure, Ep 1 - Iquitos/Tapiche Nature Reserve Pt.1
This video covers the first few days of Andy and I's trip to Peru for three weeks during October and November 2016 . We started at Iquitos, where we were shown round a local market before taking a boat trip along the Rio Belen. After this we took a Mototaxi around town, which was great fun. We then travelled to Tapiche Nature Reserve for a few days searching for river dolphins, exploring the jungle and looking out for monkeys. The video finishes with the chilling noise of the Howling monkeys, which is where the next video will pick up from. Enjoy!

Aquatic Birds Breeding Zone 2017, Tapiche Jungle Reserve, Peru
The Tapiche Jungle Reserve is a private conservation property in the northern Amazon of Peru. We believe jungle animals should be wild, not domesticated or manipulated for human entertainment.
For about 6 months each year, a 20-hectare area tucked at the end of a lagoon becomes the noisy breeding ground for hordes of aquatic birds like Agami Heron, Boat-Billed Heron, Cocoi Heron, Neotropical Cormorant, Anhinga, Hoatzin, Great Egret, Snowy Egret and Wattled Jacana. Before the reserve was established, locals would collect the eggs to eat or sell. It took 2 years of patrolling the area before the birds recovered their population, and now we're happy to welcome them back in greater numbers every year. The Agami, classified as VU-Vulnerable by the IUCN (high risk of extinction in the wild) is an elusive bird that is otherwise difficult to see, but during breeding season they are at our lagoon in the thousands. It is a birdwatcher's dream.
This year the area occupied solely by the Agami Herons measured 300m long by 50-100m wide. The Agami Herons (blue and red with long, thin bill) are the first ones to arrive to the nesting ground each year. The Boat-billed Herons (white with yellow and navy blue and a wide, rounded bill) arrive a bit later and often take over nests built by the Agami. Living quarters are close, and territorial disputes are common, as you see in the video.
