Latham 2018 Trip to New York Day 1
The Latham's + Lindsay take a trip to New York City. Here is day 1!
BARNES & NOBLES/ CAFE / HANGOUT /PINOY ABROAD VLOGS : cuzuvmcvoy
Hello and welcome to another adventure and this time, let me take you to our favorite hang out place near our home. BARNES & NOBLES BOOKSELLER. Yes, that is right. It is like National Bookstore that we have in the Philippines. As usual, a 15 minute vlog is not enough to cover the tour of this place so I am probably going to split this vlog into 2 parts.
This B&N has a cafe inside the store. They serve Starbucks drinks like Frappuccino and Specialty Coffees and Teas, and they also serve not only cheesecake from The Cheesecake Factory but they also have soups, hot and cold sandwiches, and, wow, Pizza!!! Well, they used to call it Pizza, but now that it is in a form of a rectangular dough bread hence they changed the name on the menu and called it FLATBREADS .... but they taste so yummy, like Pizza. Other B&N branches does not have an indoor cafe so we feel lucky that the one nearest to us have one. As I have mentioned in this vlog, we just don't understand why we love dining in this cafe. Is it because eating while being surrounded by all these paperback makes one feel daring??? Like sneaking food and having a picnic inside a LIBRARY... dunno, it is just fun. My hubby and I love it here.
I went around to see what's new in the store and I noticed that they are selling more children's toys more than ever. There used to be an AUDIO /VISUAL SECTION where you can buy DVD's and CD's... but they have torn down that section and has dedicated that entire area for children's books-and yes, more children's toys!!! Well, good for them, kids. More and more children hangout in B&N nowadays. They even have a little nook for story telling time and role play and puppet show. No fee. Just bring your kids. No need to purchase anything. Now that's what I call customer service.

Roy Choi and the Next Street Food Revolution
Popular chef wants to bring healthier choices to the inner city with new restaurant LocoL.
Subscribe:
Roy Choi is known to many as the man who started the food truck movement with Kogi BBQ, a Los Angeles taco truck that brought the Korean Mexican taco to the masses.
What made Kogi popular was Choi's ability to blend different flavors—a talent he credits to his upbringing on the streets of LA.
I'm an immigrant here in this country, says Choi. My parents came over here without much and we had to hustle and we moved a lot and we did a lot of different things to survive.
Choi has not only survived, but has thrived since finding his calling with street food. He now is involved with over half-a-dozen restaurants, has written a New York Times bestselling memoir titled L.A. Son: My Life, My City, My Food, and is considered one of the top chefs in the world.
His next project is focused on taking the ideals of street food and using them bring healthier food choices to low income neighborhoods. He's partnered with Michelin star chef Daniel Patterson to create LocoL—a new restaurant in the heart of South Central Los Angeles.
We're in Watts. We're right in the heart of the Jordan Downs projects, states Choi. The best picture I could paint is a place filled with history, love, smiling faces, and beautiful people.
Watts has never fully recovered from the 1965 riots that left the neighborhood in ruins—and over 50 years later economic hardship continues to define the area. Today 40 percent of residents live below the poverty line and Los Angeles' Health Atlas shows Watts residents have the lowest life expectancy rates in California.
Choi hopes that LocoL can begin to reverse this trend by serving up healthier fast food with a menu that includes classics like burgers and tacos, but also lighter options like tofu bowls and fresh green juice.
What you see is fast food, states Choi. That way anybody who walks through these screen doors when they look at the menu I want them to have almost an instinctual reaction to it.
Choi's motivation for opening LocoL is to combat food deserts—which are areas that lack access to fresh produce and grocery stores. But several studies have questioned the existence of these food deserts and their link to poor nutrition. Researchers say that its not that people don't have access to fresh fruits and veggies, it's just that they don't want to eat it.
But Choi's argument is that it is more of a mental hurdle than a question of access. When speaking to fellow chefs at the MAD Symposium—an event held by a Danish non-profit in Copenhagen—he said that he wasn't looking to change the way people make decisions, he just wanted to provide them more choice.
Food is only the beginning. Food was the fastest thing that we could affect and it was the one area that we could slide into because everyone has to eat. But really it's the tip of an iceberg of a larger discussion, Choi states.
He's optimistic that change can happen based on his experience with the food truck revolution—which democratized the dining experience by giving chefs a low cost model to bring their culinary creations to a larger customer base.
I'm really proud of what we did, states Choi. We got to tell our own stories and then those became things that everyone was attracted to for their own reasons. It's almost like they were being held back and now those voices are heard and those flavors and those trucks are roaming throughout the country and anyone and everyone can express themselves.
Choi says that he doesn't expect LocoL to change the neighborhood overnight, but hopes that by creating a chef-driven restaurant he can draw attention to the area and begin a dialogue.
I already lived through the food truck revolution. In my lifetime in the last seven years I've seen peoples' whole lives changed—whole neighborhoods, whole industries, says Choi. If this is successful then what happens is it's not just us. Then you have real estate developers. Then you have investors. Then you have politicians all looking at these communities that they've completely abandoned and coming back.
Choi continues, That can give jobs out to the community. And then all of a sudden we create a whole other economy within the economy.
Approximately 10 minutes.

York County Spirits Trail: My Top Choices for Pennsylvania’s Best Craft Beer, Wine & Spirits
There is so much to do in York County, Pennsylvania, including sipping your way through some of the area’s best craft beer, wine and spirits on a Mason-Dixon Wine Trail trip.
Begin at the Maple Lawn Winery where the winemakers go out of their way to get their fruit wines to taste as close to real fruit as possible. Some, like their peach, are 100% grown right on the farm. Make sure to do a tasting where you get to sample everything from cherry, blueberry and peach wine to hard ciders with a crisp bubbly finish. Afterwards, tour the farm to see where the fruit is grown or check out their Maize Quest Corn Maze and Fun Park. Oh and don’t forget to end you visit in the farm market where all their produce plus jams and jellies and other sweet treats are for sale.
Next up head to Wyndridge Farm, which is also part of the Susquehanna Ale Trail. Here you’ll discover a state-of-the-art brew house with a 30-barrel brewery, where they make beer, cider and craft soda on site. The brewery is growing quickly too and in the last three years has gone from local only to distributing in nine states. One of the best parts about Wyndrige is their ability to experiment with smaller batches of beer that use different flavors and techniques from barrel aging to wild fermentation, which means there is always something new to taste.
Continue the good libations voyage down the Susquehanna Ale Trail in downtown York at Collusion Tap Works, which has been open for just about a year and already brewed more than 200 types of beer! The taphouse is known for featuring two to three new beers each week and has a total of 24 on draft that are all made in-hour. There is also a small gastro pub serving tasty morsels onsite.
Finally wind down your day at the Old Republic Distillery, which is part of the Keystone Craft Spirits Trail and was first limited distillery in PA to open after prohibition. They make two vodkas and three moonshines that all use produce from local farms. Don’t skip the blackberry vodka. We also loved the Black Cherry and Apple Pie moonshine flavors. You can sample all their products in the tasting room with electric cobalt blue lighting that makes it feel a bit like a night club, and hence the perfect ending spot for a day of craft beer and spirit tasting.

The Greatest Hip Hop Groups
Hip hop music, also called hip-hop or rap music, is a genre of popular music developed in the United States by inner-city African Americans and Latino Americans in the Bronx borough of New York City in the 1970s. It consists of a stylized rhythmic music that commonly accompanies rapping, a rhythmic and rhyming speech that is chanted. It developed as part of hip hop culture, a subculture defined by four key stylistic elements: MCing/rapping, DJing/scratching with turntables, break dancing, and graffiti writing.

The Bigfoot Stories You've Never Heard #WeirdDarkness
I KNOW THE MUSIC IS TOO LOUD. Unfortunately I had to learn that after I'd already posted this and it had been up for a while. My other videos do not have the same problem.
SOURCE: Cabinet of Curiosities by Troy Taylor:
Check out the HauntingStories channel!
This episode is a collaboration with my friends and Haunting Stories. I’ll be telling you about Bigfoot – and over at Haunting Stories they’ve posted another video, with me narrating a continuation of this regarding the Minnesota Iceman! Be sure to check out their video right after you watch this one! This is Weird Darkness – where you’ll find creepypastas, ghost stories, unsolved mysteries, crytptids like Bigfoot, and other stories of the strange and bizarre. Feel free to share your own creepy story at WeirdDarkness.com, I might use it in a future episode! Now.. sit back, turn down the lights, and come with me into the Weird Darkness!
It all started with a bunch of footprints at a construction site. Or at least the modern-day fascination with “Bigfoot” did. Stories of hairy giants in the woods and wandering “wild men” had been a part of American lore for nearly two centuries by the time the nickname “Bigfoot” was coined in the late 1950s. But it was then, with the advent of television and the modern media, that chasing down giants in the woods became a national craze.
It was the spring of 1957 and a road construction project was underway near Bluff Creek in northern California. The project was run by a contractor named Ray Wallace and his brother, Wilbur. They hired thirty men that summer to work on the project and by late in the season, Wilbur Wallace reported that something had been throwing around some metal oil drums at the work site. When winter arrived that year, cold weather brought the work to a halt, even though only ten miles of road had been completed.
In early spring 1958, some odd tracks were discovered near the Mad River close to Korbel, California. Some of the locals believed they were bear tracks. As it happened, this was close to another work site that was managed by the Wallace brothers.
Later on that spring, work started up again on the road near Bluff Creek. A number of new men were hired, including Jerry Crew, who drove more than two hours each weekend so he could be home with his family. Ten more miles of road were constructed, angling up across the face of a nearby mountain. On August 3, 1958, Wilbur Wallace stated that something threw a seven-hundred-pound spare tire to the bottom of a deep gully near the work site. This incident was reported later in the month, after the discovery of the footprints.
On August 27, Jerry Crew arrived for work early in the morning and found giant, manlike footprints pressed into the dirt all around his bulldozer. He was at first upset by the discovery, thinking that someone was playing a practical joke on him, but then he decided to report what he found to Wilbur Wallace. At this point, the footprints had not been made public. That occurred on September 21, when Mrs. Jess Bemis, the wife of one of the Bluff Creek work crew, wrote a letter to Andrew Genzoli, the editor of a local newspaper. Genzoli published her husband's Big Foot story and caught the attention of others in the area. One of these was Betty Allen, a newspaper reporter who suggested in a late September column that plaster casts should be made of the footprints. She had already talked to local Native Americans and interviewed residents about hairy giants in the area. She convinced Genzoli to run other stories and letters about Bigfoot. This would be the beginning of a story that would capture the imagination of America.
On October 1 and 2, Jerry Crew discovered more tracks, very similar to the first ones. In response to the new discovery, two workers quit and Wilbur Wallace allegedly introduced his brother Ray to the situation for the first time, bringing him out to show him the tracks. On the day after the last tracks were found, Jerry Crew made plaster casts of the footprints, with help from his friend Bob Titmus and reporter Betty Allen. He was irritated that people were making fun of him and wanted to offer the casts as evidence that he wasn’t making the whole thing up. On October 5, Andrew Genzoli published his now-famous story about Bigfoot. It was picked up worldwide by the wire services, and soon the term was being used in general conversation.
