Valparaiso Travel Guide - Exploring Chile's Cultural Capital Video Transcript:
So, hello from Valparaiso. That means paradise on the valley. We have a few days to explore the city and we're planning to do most of it on foot. Yes, and most of it is going up hills as well. And there is so much cool street art here. So we're going to be taking a few different walking tours while we're in town. Today we're doing the first one which should be an overview of the city. And it should be fun. So we're going to take you on a little guided tour of Valparaiso. Yee-haw!
To say Valparaiso is a bit hilly would be an understatement. The city is a maze of steep inclines which means the best way to get around and save your legs for sightseeing, is by riding up and down the funiculars. It might seem a bit daunting considering some of these are well over a hundred years old, but they still do the job.
And this is our friend the pup who has joined our tour. She's the official bodyguard. And she knows where the funiculars are located so she took the stairs instead. Hi, pup. You're sweet aren't you? Yes, you are. Yes, you are. Yes, you are.
If we can offer one recommendation for visiting Valparaiso, it would be to join one of the free walking tours towards the beginning of your stay. This is a great way to get some background history and to familiarize yourself with the various neighbourhoods. The local guides know where to find the best murals, so consider this a scouting mission. You can always come back with a bit more time to explore the area with your camera in hand.
Apparently, there are 42 hills in the city and we're just exploring it for the first time today. And my first impressions are so much better now that we're seeing this cool part. It is so colorful, so artsy and lots of fun to check out. Exactly.
Another thing we really enjoyed about our walking tour of Valparaiso, was the company of all the dogs. Valparaiso has a lot of strays roaming the streets, but we found the dogs to be super friendly and affectionate. We also noticed locals feeding dogs.
We're having a little food break. I think we're going to try some empanadas. And I see that they have shrimp ones on the menu. Shrimp and cheese empanadas so those should be really tasty.
The harbor tours depart from Muelle Prat as soon as they get a boat-full of passengers. During the outing you’ll go past container ships, tug boats, and navy vessels, plus you’ll also have a guide on-board to point out sights along the way.
Viña del Mar is a super quick day trip from Valparaiso. The two cities are only 8 kilometers apart and you can easily get there with the above ground metro system that runs along the beach. It’s only a 15 minute ride, and it’s quite the change in scenery. Whereas Valparaiso is colorful, artsy, and gritty, Viña del Mar is a bit more chic and modern. That being said, while we enjoyed our day trip to Viña del Mar, we were really glad we decided to stay in Valparaiso as we felt it had way more character.
So our time in Valparaiso is coming to an end. What are your final thoughts of the place? Yeah, that is a wrap from here. I loved it here. It was one of the coolest cities that I think we've visited on this entire South America trip. We have to show you the views from our balcony. Look at that. You get to see the hills, the colorful hills. Bye Valparaiso.
Our visit Valparaiso travel guide covers some of the top attractions including the best in arts, entertainment, museums, nightlife and restaurants (Cocina Chilena). We also cover off-the-beaten-path activities that you won't find in your typical tourism brochure or Santiago city guide.
This is part of our Travel in Chile series. We're making a series of videos showcasing Chilean culture, Chilean arts, Chilean foods, Chilean religion, Chilean cuisine and Chilean people.

Our trip to Chile wouldn't have been complete without a visit to the capital, so towards the end of our stay we decided to visit Santiago. We had 4 days to discover what the city was all about, so we set out to visit the main attractions, sample Chilean food, and explore various neighborhoods on foot. We may not have been able to see it all, but the following is our experience in the city. For anyone planning a similar trip, here's a look at 20 things to do in Santiago de Chile on your visit:
And that's a wrap for the Chilean capital! We hope you enjoyed this Santiago travel guide and that it gave you a few ideas of things to do, places to visit, and Chilean dishes to try in the city.

After close to a month travelling around Chile, Sam and I hopped on a plane to visit Easter Island, known locally as Rapa Nui. This was the closest we were ever going to get to this remote speck in the ocean, which also happens to be the southeastern most point of the Polynesian Triangle. We gave ourselves one full week to explore Isla de Pascua, and what follows is a travel guide of our time there. We hiked ancient volcanoes, stood face to face with the moai, watched spectacular sunrises and sunsets, and road tripped around the island while wild horses ran alongside. It was an incredible week and we hope this video will inspire you to plan your own visit to Easter Island.
Good afternoon from the town of San Pedro de Atacama in Chile. We've been here a few days taking a few different day trips to visit volcanoes and lagoons and see flamingos and doing lots of cool stuff. We've seen lots of wildlife, we've seen some amazing landscapes. And now we're going to show you the town. It's actually quite small and there isn't a lot to do but if you're taking tours from here you're going to end up spending a bit of time in San Pedro so yeah let's go take a little tour.

Travelling Chile from the north to south and beginning in the Atacama Desert poses a very interesting landscape. Arica was my first destination travelling through Chile and the town is completely dry, brown, and on the coast.
Arica, Chile:
Leaving south the next stop was Iquique, Chile. As you enter Iquique, the road hugs that side of an enormous sand dune and you turn the corner to see Iquique open below you. A city lined with beaches, Iquique is also famous for sand boarding down the gigantic dunes.
Anzota Caves, Arica, Chile:
During my time in Iquique in Chile, I enjoyed some beach time, strolled around the city, visited the Iquique Football Stadium and compiled this small video of the northern Chilean town of Iquique.

Tourists pick their own grapes at Chile wine harvest fest
(28 Mar 2018) LEADIN:
Chile's wine harvest draws thousands of tourists each year.
The experience at Viu Manent winery offers tourists the chance to ride on horse-drawn carriages in the pastures of the Colchagua Valley, one of Chile's best-known wine regions.
STORYLINE:
Armed with sharp scissors and donning dusty gloves and aprons, dozens of tourists are walking through rows of green centenary vines.
They're hand-picking dark, purple grapes that will eventually be turned into fine Chilean wines and drank worldwide.
It's hard, but gratifying work under the scorching sun, the professional pickers that observe them from a distance with a grin, know it all too well.
But this group of tourists have paid for the hands-on experience at Chile's harvest, which draws thousands of tourists to the South American country each year.
Very beautiful, to see all the process of vine production, it's very interesting, says Danish tourist Jins Skuvrup.
They carefully cut the precious grapes in bunches and deposit them into heavy wooden crates.
It's a marvelous experience, a unique experience, that you cannot pass up, says Colombian tourist, Gina Cuesta.
You drink the wine, but you don't know the process.
Chile has been making wine since the mid-1500s, when Spanish settlers brought the first vines, and has long established itself as one of the top exporters as well as a main supplier of reliable and affordable wine.
The experience at the Viu Manent winery also offers tourists the chance to ride on horse-drawn carriages or electric bikes in the pastures of the Colchagua Valley, one of Chile's best-known wine regions.
Founded in 1935, Viu Manent was awarded Winery of the Year in 2017 by the Wines of Chile association.
I think that some vineyards have some initiatives, says Freddy Grez, who's in charge of Viu Manent's tourist activities.
But none is so complete and focused to the integral experience of viticulture and enology as ours, this is a full-day experience.
Each year, about 37,000 tourists - most from Brazil and the United States - visit the winery, located about 90 miles (140 kilometers) south of the Chilean capital each year.
The two-hour drive from Santiago along the so-called Wine Trail gives tourists the chance to wine-hop at guesthouses and restaurants that offer the Carmenere, Cabernet Sauvignon, and other varieties that have made Chile famous.
Chile is the world's no. 9 wine producer, with an output of about 800 million litres last year, the world's fourth-largest exporter of wine by volume, and the top one among New World producers.
Chile's natural barriers have a lot to do with its successful wine evolution: it is shielded by the Pacific Ocean on the west, the Andes Mountain on the east, Antarctica to the south and the world's driest desert in the north.
This has helped protect Chile from diseases that affect the vines, helping winemakers to grow vines ungrafted, using ancient cultivation techniques.
In recent years, Chilean winemakers have also been looking for other temperatures and terrains.
In a quest for a more interesting juice, they've experimented with different wine tastes and characters, often in extreme places that range from the icy south to the northern Atacama Desert.
Back at the Viu Manent winery, tourists have gathered about 1,100 pounds (500 kilograms) of grapes.
It seems like a lot but, Grez says that depending on the harvest, a professional worker can pick twice, or as much as four times more than that - anywhere from 2,000 pounds (900 kilograms) to 4,400 pounds (2,000 kilos) a day.

Chile Relleno Pizza in Mexico City || Fork Yeah: Pizza del Perro Negro
When people think of Mexico City, pizza typically isn't the first thing that comes to mind. But amid all the tacos and quesadillas, Mexico City has way more to offer -- like pizza. Pizza del Perro Negro is a half skatepark, half pizza joint that serves the most unorthodox pizzas in Mexico. Each pie is inspired by popular Mexican dishes, like their chile relleno pizza. Every slice holds a giant cheese-stuffed poblano pepper. Cook and founder, Tino Athie, reveals the inspiration behind his recipes: rock 'n' roll. His ultimate goal is to push the boundaries of Mexican cuisine via pizza.

CHILEAN MICRO BREW AND HOT DOGS Altamira in Valparaiso
It was nice to stop in to see the local beer scene here in Valparaiso. I have now tasted booze from all over Chile, and while I'm by no means an expert, the microbrew here at Altamira didn't disappoint!
What better way to chase it all down than a straight up Chilean hot dog! More toppings than dog, but with that quintessential snap, what's not to like.

Backpacking South America (As Digital Nomads) - Peru and Chile
In Part Three of our series on backpacking South America as digital nomads, we travel to Peru and Chile.
We spent one month living in Lima, the capital of Peru. During that time, we were teaching and blogging a lot. I was also taking Spanish classes and planning our upcoming adventures.
Of course, we still got out to explore the city on some walking tours, and we ate tons of ceviche that we washed down with tasty Pisco Sours.
From Lima, we headed to Santiago. It was great timing as a friend had an open room in her apartment, so we got to live there for a month and see the city from a more local perspective.
In that time, we also traveled to Valparaiso for their epic NYE party. We also spent a week hiking and camping down south in Patagonia. Not bad for a month in Chile as digital nomads!
After Carnaval in Brazil, we spent another week in Santiago, this time in our own Airbnb downtown. Overall, we really enjoyed the city and would happily spend more time there.

Chorrillana: Typical Chilean Snack in Santiago, Chile
One of the classic Chilean snack food dishes worth trying when visiting Santiago is something called Chorrillana. This dish, which is worth sharing with a friend of two, is basically a mountain of french fries with sliced beef, fried egg and fried onion on top. We've now had it enough times to realize no two restaurants make it the same. We've seen fried egg versus scrambled egg, tenderloin versus sliced sausage and several different ways of preparing the onion. At the restaurant we filmed this video (Galindo) they prepared it with tenderloin, scrambled egg and caramelized onions. We've also heard of chorizo, tomatoes and even bananas being thrown on top of the fries! It's the kind of dish, much like poutine in Canada, where you can play around with it to suit any kind of taste. Regardless, be sure to bring your appetite (and possibly a friend or two) because portions tend to be huge and we struggled to finish ours. You can pick one up in a typical Chilean restaurant or Chilean pub.

Chorrillana: Typical Chilean Snack in Santiago, Chile Travel Video:
So it is time for a little afternoon snack in Santiago. Today we're at a restaurant called Galindo and we're going to be trying a dish that is called Chorrillana. And this is a lot like a Canadian poutine. Now if you're not too familiar with Canadian poutine that is kind of like when you get some French Fries with gravy and cheese and other ingredients over top. So this is going to be similar but with a Chilean twist so we're waiting for the food to arrive now.
Well as you can see the food has arrived and the funny part is this is listed as an appetizer or a starter for one person. If you have a look at that, that is enough to feed two grown people. I think Sam and I are going to struggle with this. It is our main. It is our main. Definitely.
Alright Sam, so it is time to give us the tour of the plate. Yes, so before I tuck into this tasty little treat I'm going to explain what we've got here. So we have tenderloin, onion and scrambled egg on top of those french fries. It is actually a little bit different from the first time we tried Chorrillana because they put a fried egg on top and also sausage. Yes. But this has a lot more meat. This is a very generous portion.
So dig right in hungry boy. Thank you, thank you, thank you. Yeah. Enjoying that meat? Oh, yeah. Wow, those are like really tasty onions. You can tell they've been marinated in something. I think they're caramelized. Yeah, caramelized onions I think. And the french fries are a golden perfection. It is just going to be an awesome filling carb loaded delicious little treat.
So we've had this dish a few times since we've arrived in Santiago and no two Chorrillanas are the same. This one is different, I mean it has no sausage or hot dogs and that was our first experience trying Chorrillanas. And also this one has scrambled eggs instead of fried egg on top. So it is kind of nice that you can always find a bit of variety when you go to a different restaurant. And I think I am ready for my first bite. Got a little bit of everything in there.
Mmmm.
Wow. That meat is tender isn't it? It is tender. It is tenderloin, so it should be tender. It should be tender. Wow. That is nice. In a way it is kind of nice that they only have the beef and there is no sausage because like this is a really good cut of meat. It is very juicy so the flavors really come through. You don't have too many competing tastes. Yeah, you don't need a whole lot of ingredients with this dish. Not when it is done well.
Alright, but now it is time for the big question. Which do you prefer - Canadian poutine or Chilean Chorrillana?
Well, this is really good but you know what nothing compares to Canadian poutine. That is like in a league of its own. But this is really tasty. And if you want come and try it at this restaurant it is going to be just under 8000 Chilean Pesos which currently is about 10 US dollars. So it is not bad value. Bring a friend or two to help you out. That is my tip.

Entry from: Valparaiso, Chile
Entry Title: Beautiful UNESCO listed Valparaiso
Entry:
Following blurb Ive cut and pasted from the guide so I can remember in the future... sorry... skip over if not interested. Valparoisa is 115km NW of Santiago and said to be Chile's most captivating. During the 19th century, ValparaÃso ranked as a port town of such wealth that few others in the world could compare, but in the years following the completion of the Panama C****, ValparaÃso sunk into poverty. Today, especially on hills such as Cerro Concepción and Cerro Alegre, the city's rundown buildings are being rebuilt. The historical importance of this city - a reason why UNESCO designated ValparaÃso a World Heritage Site in 2002. Much like San Francisco, the city is made of a flat downtown surrounded by steep hills. The jumble of multicolored clapboard homes and weathered Victorian mansions that cling to sheer cliffs and other unusual spaces and you could spend days exploring the maze of narrow passageways and winding streets that snake down ravines and around hillsides. OK - .... the bus trip there was lovely with viws of pretty wineries all along the road. I rang Alberto the hostel owner from the bus as he was picking us up at the teminal which was just as well as the city spreads over 3 steep hills with all the buildings filling the hills with no plan and often alleys and steps but no roads seperating the properties. The Alecon hostel is in a great position on the top of Cerro Alegre and 2 minutes from one of the 100plus year old funculars. - we would never have found the place ourselves. Its a small hostel with only 4 rooms and we were the only ones staying thre. Alberto is a spanish Valapraisian and a very ¨proud¨one... sigh... because this resulted in him sitting us down on our arrival and giving us a walking trail to follow with an explanation of every nook and cranny along the way with history and antedotes thrown in.... which was great until at last we escaped from him more than an hour in only to find it took us less than half this time to cover his route! Its an absolutely beautiful town with all its multicoloured buildings, cobled laneways and steps going straight downwards disappearing around corners into alleys and the steps down again... and when you look up there is wonderful views over the port below. Add to this over various spots across the hills all the lovely funiculars that are all so different, big small, steep, short long, with most built in th early 1800´s Each ride cost about 25 cents to take you up or down different parts of the hills... a really pretty and unique place. As per Alberto's instructions we ended down near the prot where where he hd recommended a supposedly great seafood restaurant. Found it and there standing outside hawking for passerbyers to enter for lunch was a fantastic looking old guy with curly black dyed hair and wearing a white suit and shoes - looking just like a gangster out of a 40's movie! hee While we were eating the mobster guy came in and tuned on the kareoke machine and proceeed to sing at each table. Of course he sang me and Rob a love song....??? and then he spoilt the moment?? by proceeding to give each table an envelope for us to place a tip in! ha We spent the afternoon taking the funiculars up and down the hills and for dinner we went to the terrace at the Brighton Hotel which is a beautiful little pink hotel that hangs off the side of a cliff. Dinner at a place like this in Australia would have cost a bomb but was peanuts here (about $20 for 2 including drinks). Next morning we woke to rain! Guess we'd be lucky again yesterday being able to wander Valparaiso in the beautiful sunshine ...
