Riding the Longest Cableway in the World - The Wings of Tatev in Armenia (Guinness World Records)
Wings of Tatev is a 5.7 km cableway between Halidzor and the Tatev monastery in the Syunik province of Armenia. It is the longest reversible aerial tramway built in one section only and is officially recorded in the Guinness World Records book on 23 October 2010. The video is recorded while departing from the Tatev monastery on 23 August, 2012. The scenery depicts the Vorotan river gorge with the naturally formed bridge.

The Wings of Tatev Aerial Tramway was built as part of the Tatev Revival Project. The length of the aerial line broke the world record, and its construction was also completed in a record-breaking timeframe of ten months. The project was designed and implemented by Doppelmayr/Garaventa, an Austrian-Swiss company that is a world leader in aerial tramway design. A cable car ride to the Monastery takes just 12 minutes. By land it would take 40 minutes along the steep, winding road through the Vorotan River Gorge. As one tramway cabin reaches the Tatev Terminal, the other arrives at the Halidzor Terminal. Each cabin holds 25 passengers and a tram driver, and each hour 200 passengers ride this unique tramway. Three massive supports divide the ropeway into four sections, with the longest at 2.7 kilometers. From this section, passengers can enjoy a magnificent view as they approach the Monastery.

Tatev Monastery - marvel of architecture and nature
Tatev Monsatry (Tatev) is a masterpiece of confluence of ingenious medieval architecture and fabulous nature of Armenia. There is no doubt, that Tatev is one of the most spectacular tourist attractions on the Planet. Tatev was also widely regarded as one of the most famous spiritual and educational centers of the Middle Ages.
The Monastery of Tatev (Armenian: Տաթև) is a 9th century Armenian monastery located on a large basalt plateau near the Tatev village in Syunik Province in southern Armenia. It stands on a plateau on the edge of the deep gorge of the Orotan (Vorotan) River. It became the bishopric seat of Syunik and played a significant role in the history of the region as a centre for economic, political, spiritual and cultural activity.
In its day the monastery itself had a population of 1,000 and owned 680 villages. A vast wealth. It was a huge center of learning, art and culture. The Tondrakians, a medieval Armenian hippie sect fought the church rule in widespread revolt, including those in villages belonging to Tatev, before finally being stamped out. In 990AD, King Vasak even burned down Tsuraberd village to end their revolt.

HITCHHIKING ARMENIA / TATEV MONASTERY / WINGS OF TATEV
Tatev Monastery is one of Armenia's most spectacular historic buildings in an epic, remote location. The only way to get there is by a long winding road or by the Wings of Tatev cable car.
The cable car at 5.7 km long is the world's longest double cable cable car and a truly thrilling ride. It is a highlight of Armenia and is a experience not to be missed for any visitor to Armenia.
The trouble is that it's difficult to reach this remote location for the independent traveller. There is no public transport from the nearest town, Goris. The only options are to take a taxi tour (which means you will be limited for time as the taxi will wait for you) or hitchhike.
Our hostel in Goris - Hostel Lovely Goris, organised taxi tours to Tatev that were 3 hours long for 3000 Dram per person which is good value but I wanted the freedom to linger at Tatev and enjoy the scenery there at a leisurely pace.
I chose to hitchhike and had quite an adventure, meeting some wonderful people along the way. If you take the back road like I did, you have to be prepared to walk as there is very little traffic, but it will be an experience you won't forget.
One piece of advice I can give about the cable car is that it can get very popular in the peak summer months so it is best to book a place in advance to avoid the long queues. It was fine for me in June.
Tickets are 5500 one way or 7000 return.

The Tatev monastery (Armenian: Տաթևի վանք Tat'evi vank' ) is a 9th-century Armenian Apostolic monastery located on a large basalt plateau near the Tatev village in Syunik Province in southeastern Armenia. The term Tatev usually refers to the monastery. The monastic ensemble stands on the edge of a deep gorge of the Vorotan River. Tatev is known as the bishopric seat of Syunik and played a significant role in the history of the region as a center of economic, political, spiritual and cultural activity.
In the 14th and 15th centuries the monastery hosted one of the most important Armenian medieval universities, the University of Tatev, which contributed to the advancement of science, religion and philosophy, reproduction of books and development of miniature painting. Scholars of the Tatev University contributed to the preservation of Armenian culture and creed during one of its most turbulent periods in its history.
The monastery is the best-known site in Syunik. Wings of Tatev, a cableway from Tatev to Halidzor village was opened in October 2010. It was included in the Guinness World Records as world's longest non-stop double track cable car.

This is my last day in armenia and it was a good experienced while visiting this place. First, there culture amaze me more.. Second, the food was spectacular and tasty. Third, the locals are very friendly. Forth, the nature ohh well.. cant explain.. if u see there mountains, trees and flowers, totally beautiful paradise. In gods time, i will surely comeback here and stay more days. I really love armenia.. much loved!!
