Fira (Thira)
Best places to stay in Santorini are Fira, Firostefani, Imerovigli and Oia. But Fira is the capital of Santorini. It clings to the top of the cliff (on the edge of the Caldera) just like Oia, Imerovigli and Firostefani and has the most magnificent view of the volcano. To save you a lot of travelling time and cheaper hotel accomodations, Fira is the best of all. The central bus station is in Fira and is accessible to many destination in Santorini . The bus fare ranges from 1.80€ to 2.40€. You can ask a copy of the bus time table from your hotel. Every bus will have a sign of the destination (attractions) such as Kamari beach (Black beach), Perissa Beach (black beach), Red Beach and Akrotiri (Excavation archaeological site), Oia, etc and bring you to the doorstep of the destination (The buses are coaches and are very comfortable with air conditioning ). Fira has the most shoppings and restaurants and is very convenient to go anywhere in Santorini. Though Fira is buzzling from morning to night, traffic there is also chaotic. Be very careful when crossing the road. There are not many pedestrian pathway.
Donkey rides. I personally don’t encourage these rides as the donkeys have to ferry tourist up and down the cliff (about 587 steps). Weather is extremely scorching and I can see the donkeys were exhausted doing this all day long.
Walking down the cliff is fine but walking up is merely impossible and what more about the donkeys ferrying tourist up and down. Take the cable car. Cable car is only €6.00 per person per trip.
Kamari and Perissa Beach (Black Beach)
Kamari and Perissa beach are located on the easten side of the island with shops, restaurants and hotels. Kamari and Perissa are just separated by a hugh mountain of rock. The beaches are so beautiful with lots of nice hotels located directly infront of the beach. The water is deep blue and the sand is black and is magnificent. The water is so clear that you can see the bottom of the floor (volcano pebbles). Swimming here is great. If you are a beach person and love the peaceful surroundings, these places will be suitable for you to stay. At the far end of the beach, you can find watersports there. Tips: Beach umbrella is free when you buy a drink from the restaurant in Kamari.
Red Beach
Red beach is just next to the excavation archaeological site. This beach is well known of its unique colour of the rocks in red. It is one of the most famous and beautiful beaches of Santorini. In order to make your way to the beach, be prepare to climb over the rocks with a narrow path. There are no shops or maybe one restaurant high up the cliff on this beach. Its worth visiting this beach but be careful of falling rocks.
Akrotiri Excavations Archaelogical Site
Akrotiri Excavations is situated next to the red beach.
Volcano and hot spring tour Excursion
A must see place. Tips: Get good shoes and no slipper, plenty of water and a paper fan. Temperature there is scorching. Be prepared to climb but the view there is spectacular. After that the boat will bring you to the hot spring. If you can swim and have no medical problem, it is a good experience.
White Beach
We took a boat taxi to this white beach from the red beach. If you are in white beach, the only transport back is by boat taxi because there are no buses or hotels at the white beach. There is only one restaurant at the beach. There are no facilities. Still the boat ride was nice and the beach is beautiful.
Oia (Famous sun set)
From Fira to Oia, it takes about 30 minutes. The bus will bring you right to the square of Oia. Walk a few hundred meters up the castle, you can see the sun set. The best spot to watch the famous sun set. Oia has plenty of shops, restaurants and hotels with a magnificent view. You may want to visit Oia in the afternoon, relax and shop around and dine and watch the sun set. It’s a beautiful village that perched high up on the edge of the Caldera with a breathtaking view of the volcano and the whitewashed cliff top towns with that stunning blue roofs
Best Greek Restaurant in Fira : Parea Tavern. Best grilled chicken and pita ever had.
Lastly, you can also rent a quad bikes or cars to explore the island. There are many rental shops of quads/cars in Santorini. Driving in Santorini is really crazy, traffic is chaotic and the roads are very narrow, not mentioning the steep roads. Well, Santorini is a beautiful and romantic place that is unforgetable with that magnificent view and we love it all. Sitting and relaxing in the bar or restaurant having a martini at the high cliff of the Caldera overlooking the volcano and the deep blue waters and watching the sun set is a great experience for us.
We hope you enjoy the video and tips above.

Red beach is one of the most sought-after beaches on the island of Santorini, mainly for its unique red volcanic sand that helps you believe you could easily be on Mars.
Red beach lies on the south end of Santorini, not far from the Akrotiri archaeological site. It can be reached by regular bus service from Fira, the main town, or by renting a quad bike. A taxi can get you there rather quicker, for about 15 euros tops.

Nike- Flyknits (Multicolor)
Food/Drinks:
Greek Gyros- Any place around the island is great! Pork, Lamb or Chicken and fries come packed inside the pita!
Niki Restaurant- Decent Food, not the best but a great place to watch the sunset in Fira. Not as pricey as one may think. A good meal with drinks will run you €10-25 depending on your appetite.
Murphy's Bar- Contiki mates get 2 for 1 drinks but still costs €10 euro. Good hip hop upstairs. Make your way down the spiral stairs to the bottom floor where it's much more relaxed with oldies/rock/alternative music playing.
Liogerma Cafe- A Contiki sponsored cafe where wine and appetizers are included along with reserved seats to watch Ioa's unforgettable sunset. €25 via Contiki tour.
Red Beach Parking Lot Food Stand- Fresh Fruit Smoothie for €2.50 euro delicious and perfect before making 10-minute hike to the secluded Red Beach.
BOSS Ice Cream Bar- Cookies and Cream. Can Be found at almost every place that sells ice cream in Santorini.
Santa Irini Bakery Shop- Open 24 hours, this place is great to stop by late night after partying by the Black Sand Beaches or anytime during the day for that matter! Very nice people and all their bread, croissants and product is served warm! Their Baklava was phenomenal!!
Transportation:
ATV Rental- (Recommended)- LIVE A LITTLE! Rent an ATV for only €15 for 24 hour period at Mark's Bikes in Perissa and explore the island on your own and be adventurous!
Public Bus- Cheapest option but heard nothing but bad experiences from my Contiki Mates. Crowded, Hot and unreliable. It will get you around but also get you irritated. Not worth it on Vacation.
Taxi- Can be expensive if you're traveling across the island. If you have the money, do it but I suggest renting a car or an ATV!
Donkey Ride- In Fira and Ioa for about €5-10 up/down the cliffs or round trip. I think it's cruel and riding a donkey does nothing for me. JUST WALK!!
Fira Funicular Ride- €4 each way. Get ready for a Disneyland type line. Like I said... get some exercise and walk.
Rental Car- I heard it's not bad to rent a car and if you get one do yourself a favor and get a drop top!!
Accommodations:
IRA Family Vassalos- Located in Perissa, it is a little off the path but the hard working family does it's best to be swift in making food orders and drinks at their poolside bar. The air-conditioning was hard to control but the rooms were decent enough to stay in for a couple days. It's only a 15-Minute walk to bars and the black sand beach, so that's a plus.
Ioa- If I had the choice, I would have found a place to stay in this quaint, quiet and breathtaking town. With Santorini's best views and most famous for it's sunsets, Ioa would be my choice of area to stay.
Fira- If you are into night life and a little more hustle and bustle, Fira is the place for you. Fira is Santorini's largest town with the most restaurants, shops and famous Donkey Rides can be found here. Still a ways away from the beach!!
What to do in Santorini - Over rated? Red Beach
You hear lots of amazing things about Santorini... some might say TOO many amazing things! Is it over rated? I ask myself this question as I explore and swim at red beach Santorini.

Santorini | Perissa Village
Perissa village is located on the southeast coast of Santorini, where most of the main beaches are. Perissa village is a sea-front fishing settlement that has expanded to become a tourist magnet in its own right, mainly thanks to the presence of Perissa beach a short distance away. 15 Things to do on Santorini, Greece Travel Guide Video Transcript: (Σαντορίνη / Θήρα Ελλάδα):
We got our first glimpse of Santorini aboard the ferry and it was immediately apparent why this place has been linked to the Lost City of Atlantis.
What was once a single island, was destroyed by a massive volcanic eruption, and all that remains today is the caldera rising out of the Aegean Sea.
The first thing that caught our attention were the soaring red cliffs, and atop these, a collection of villages, all painted white.
We imagined we’d spend our week in Santorini just lounging around, but the island lured us out to hike its trails, get lost in its towns, and look back at its history. So with that in mind, in this travel guide we’re going to share with you a few things to do in Santorini on your visit!
The hike from Fira to Oia turned out to be our favourite activity on the island, but we’ll warn you, it took us closer to 5 hours, so go prepared with lots of sunscreen, plenty of water, and a few snacks to sustain you along the way.
Of course, no trip to Santorini would be complete without spending a bit of time in Oia.
Situated on the northern tip of the island and built on the slope of the caldera, this is probably the most picturesque town on the island, and a very popular spot right around sunset.
We had a leisurely ride out to the island and once we docked, we paid an additional 2 Euros and 50 cents per person for admission to Nea Kameni Volcanic Park.
From there we hiked along a gravel path until we reached the top of the crater, where we did a full circuit around the rim.
There were a few spots where we could even see active sulphur vents.
And that’s a wrap for our time in Santorini! We came here thinking we’d do a whole lot of relaxing and not much else, but as it turns out, this is a great island for an active holiday.
Our week in Santorini was spent village hopping, hiking the trails, learning about the island’s history, and feasting on Greek food.
It was the perfect way to end our travels in Greece, and also wrap up our Eurotrip.
Wishing you happy travels, and we’ll see you in the next video!
This is part of our Travel in Greece video series showcasing Greek food, Greek culture and Greek cuisine.
