Chania Tour with MANOS - best Cretan taxi driver and Chania's own Zorba the Greek (October 11, 2013)
With special THANKS and much appreciation to our wonderful taxi driver while in our Last Port of Call - Chania (Souda Bay) in sunny Crete, Greece
(Friday, October 11th 2013 aboard RCI cruise ship Navigator of the Seas)
While in CHANIA (aka Hania or Xania), do not hesitate to call Taxi Chania or email them at info@taxichania.gr and ask the lovely Dispatcher Katerina Lakiotaki for MANOS, the best local taxi driver!
σας ευχαριστώ !
We only had Manos for 2.5 hours that day in Chania Port of Call, but he proved to be professional, knowledgeable and even funny!
Stops in our own itinerary: Suda Bay War Cemetery (historic value and great views of our RCI cruise ship at sunrise), Agia Triada Monastery (in the Akrotiri Peninsula), the famous Venizelos Graves (for historical value but also fantastic panoramic views of Chania and the Cretan Sea or the White Mountains) and finally the drop off at the wonderful Manousakis Winery (visited on our own).
Γειά σας & Καλὴ τύχη! !

Chania Tour - The Venizelos Graves stop in Crete, Greece (Friday, October 11th 2013)
CHANIA Port of Call for Navigator of the Seas cruise ship docked in Souda Bay actually - in sunny Crete, Greece
Friday morning (October 11, 2013), we had a TAXI waiting for us in Souda Bay -- pre-scheduled for a day tour (at 30 EURO/hour standard rate). Mano was our driver for the day!
First, we enjoyed a beautiful sunrise and views of our RCI cruise ship from the Souda Bay War Cemetery (British Commonwealth War Cemetery) -- located approximately 5 km east from the center of Chania (Xania).
Then, we visited The Monastery of Agia Triada (Holy Trinity) -- or Tzagarolon Monastery as it is also known -- one of the most impressive monasteries you will see in Crete.
NEXT STOP -- The famous Venizelos Bros Graves
At the magical and historical location of Profitis Ilias, in Akrotiri, at the east of Hania lays the tomb of Eleftherios Venizelos -- one of the most long-standing prime ministers of Greece and whose political life was focused on doubling the size of Greek territory and on the creation of a contemporary State.
Eleftherios Venizelos himself had designated this position to be his resting place before his death.
For the visitor, it affords a panoramic view of the rich green plain of Hania, the imposing White Mountains, the Cretan Sea, the town of Hania and the Chalepa quarter which is the location of the house where the great politician spent most of his life (and today is the headquarters of the National Research Foundation 'Eleftherios K. Venizelos').
Well maintained olive trees give great shade and a wonderful statue of Spiros looks out over Chania and the Cretan Sea... lovely, lovely place!
It is said that Spiros Kayales was one of the Cretan revolutionaries that stood here amidst a vicious bombing raid from a European fleet.
Famously, after the flag pole had been shattered by gunfire and bombs, he bravely jumped into the fray and held aloft the Greek flag, using his body as a pole. Upon seeing this magnificent bravery, the European ships ceased fire.
When the flag fell the fighters broke down in tears. At that point a cry went up among them: The flag! Raise the flag!
The heroic freedom fighter Spyros Kagiales rushed into the heat of the battle and took the fallen flag in his hands and standing tall and proud on a rock he raised it high against replacing the broken flagpole with his human body, while other fighters were ready to take his place if he fell.
The crews on the Greek vessels began to shout while the Italian and French sailors, deeply moved by the enthusiasm of the Greeks, began to applaud incessantly.

Chania Tour - visiting the Monastery of Agia Triada in Crete, Greece (Friday, October 11th 2013)

First STOP -- enjoyed a beautiful sunrise and views of our RCI cruise ship from the Souda Bay War Cemetery (British Commonwealth War Cemetery) -- located approximately 5 km east from the center of Chania (Xania).
Next STOP --
The Monastery of Agia Triada (Holy Trinity) -- or Tzagarolon Monastery as it is also known -- is one of the most impressive monasteries you will see in Crete.
The Monastery of Agia Triada is located on the Akrotiri Peninsula, north of Chania Prefecture.
It is 15 kilometres from Chania; close to the equally famous Monastery of Gouverneto.
Once again, we were the first to arrive (before the large tour bus caught up to us as their passengers did when we were leaving the Suda Bay Cemetery earlier that Friday morning).
As soon as you enter the gate, you will see the wells and stairs adorned with bougainvillea, oleander and other seasonal flowers, adding a lovely accent to the complex.
This may be one of the few Cretan monasteries where the inner courtyard is so beautiful and well cared for.
The west wing of the monastery is a three-story building and includes vaulted storerooms where the wine and olive oil were once kept, while most of the courtyard is taken up by a large cistern which was used to collect rainwater from the surrounding buildings.
The Monastery of Agia Triada has a distinctive façade with Doric columns, but the elements of Renaissance architecture reminded us that the monastery was built by the Cretan monks Ieremias and Lavrentios (of the Venetian Orthodox Tzagarolos family).
By Orthodox Church tradition, the Patriarch has the right, when a monastery is founded in his jurisdiction, to send a cross which is placed in the foundations and establishes its direct dependence on him.
Monastery of Agia Triada opening hours:
8 a.m. to sunset
Winter :8 a.m. to 2 p.m. and then 4 p.m. to sunset
Gentle REMINDER:
Please make sure you are decently dressed when visiting the monastery.
The Monastery of Agia Triada Tzagarolon was built in 1634, on the site of a small church dedicated to the Holy Apostles.
The monastery supports schools in Chania, and a seminary has operated within the monastery itself since 1892.
We visited the monastery church and complex and then wandered round the area for a while.
NOT to be missed -- the large exhibition of woodcarvings and icons in the monastery's Museum.
Inside the complex there was an olive press and a cellar for the wine produced by the monastery, while on the south side is the monastery library, formerly the Abbot's Room.
In recent years the Monastery of Agia Triada Tzagarolon has developed the systematic cultivation of organic vines and olives, and produces excellent wine, tsikoudia (raki), olive oil, honey, vinegar and olive oil soap.
The monastery produces 20 tonnes of organic virgin olive oil per year. It has won international prizes and is mainly sold abroad.
The following wines are produced: dry red Cabernet, dry red Fokiano Romeiko, dry red Merlot, dry white Trebiano
Naturally, all the products of Agia Triada are available for sale from the monastery shop.
We find the Monastery to be a lovely, peaceful and pretty impressive place - certainly worth a visit!

Chania Tour - sunrise at the Suda Bay War Cemetery in Crete, Greece (Friday, October 11th 2013)
CHANIA port of Call for Navigator of the Seas cruise ship -- Crete, Greece
Friday morning (October 11, 2013), we had a TAXI waiting for us in Souda Bay -- pre-scheduled for a day tour (at 30 EURO/hour standard rate). Mano was our driver for the day!
First STOP --
Souda Bay War Cemetery (British Commonwealth War Cemetery) -- located approximately 5 km east from the center of Chania (Xania).
We were the first ones to arrive and enjoyed a gorgeous sunrise and great views of our RCI cruise ship Navigator of the Seas (docked in Souda Bay, Crete).
It is truly a beautiful spot flanked by a steeply rising hillside to the north and only a few kilometers to the base of the white mountains to the south.
It is a quiet, peaceful spot and is immaculately kept, the cemetery proper bounded by trees and shrubs on three sides and the open sea of the bay in front.
The Cemetery is permanently open and may be visited at any time.
Wheelchair access is via the path to the right of the main entrance.
There are now 1,500 Commonwealth servicemen of the Second World War buried or commemorated in the cemetery.
776 of the burials are unidentified but special memorials commemorate a number of casualties believed to be buried among them.
The cemetery also contains 19 First World War burials brought in from Suda Bay Consular Cemetery, 1 being unidentified.
There are also 7 burials of other nationalities and 37 non-war burials.
Historical Information ---
In May 1941, the Commonwealth force in Crete was organized in five widely separated defence areas along the north coast - around the three airfields at Iraklion, Rethymnon and Maleme, and at Suda Bay and the port of Chania.
The Germans launched their attack on 20 May with airborne troops. The airfield at Maleme was quickly captured and used for landing German reinforcements.
On 23 May, the remainder of the Maleme position had to be given up and its defenders fell back to Chania. On 26 May, the Allied line west of Chania was broken. Suda Bay became indefensible and the troops from these two positions, with the remainder of the Maleme garrison, withdrew across the island to Sfakion, where many of them were evacuated by sea on the nights of the 28 - 31 May.
The airborne attacks on the Iraklion and Rethymnon positions on 20 May were repulsed. Iraklion was successfully defended until the night of 29/29 May when the garrison was evacuated by sea.
Orders for the Rethymnon garrison to fight its way southward for evacuation did not arrive, and it was overwhelmed on 31 May.
Of the total Commonwealth land force of 32,000 men, 18,000 were evacuated, 12,000 were taken prisoner and 2,000 were killed.
The site of Suda Bay War Cemetery was chosen after the war and graves were moved there by 21st and 22nd Australian War Graves Units from the four burial grounds that had been established by the German occupying forces at Chania, Iraklion, Rethymnon and Galata, and from isolated sites and civilian cemeteries.

From Chania to Platanias by ANEK bus
Another trip from Chania to Platanias, this time in daylight and by bus. As you can see, day route by bus takes 18 minutes (including stops), while night route by taxi is roughly the same (17 minutes). Costs are quite different: EUR 1,90 per person by bus (ticket) versus EUR 16 (practically 20 with tip) for taxi fare (for 2 persons). Anyway, both are quite affordable.
