How used cooking oil powers a school bus in Bali | Kyla Langostky and Maxwell Hidajat | TEDxUbud
Used cooking oil is a major problem in Bali. The Bio Bus team has found a way to make this a thing of the past. Providing more than 1,800 biodiesel-fueled rides, the Bio Bus saves 3 tons of carbon dioxide from being released into the atmosphere every month. And the best part of it? This is a 100% student run social enterprise!
Learn how students stepped out of the classroom and into the ‘real world’, allowing them to create change with a tangible impact.
Take the young bright minds of Bio Bus Team members such as Maxwell and Kyla, and the Green School Bali, committed to social responsibility and ecological sustainability, and presto, things get rolling. Via biodiesel that is. These two high school students tell us about the Bio Bus initiative: from cooking oil to fuel, from fuel to soap, and providing employment for locals.
The Bio Bus Team, invited to France to attend COP21 (The 2015 Paris Climate Conference), and COY11 (the Conference of Youth), garnered international attention for their work in Bali.
Maxwell is the Bio Bus Web and App Developer. Kyla is the GS Bio Bus Social Media and Outreach Coordinator. Both love their work with the Bio Bus project because they are “setting a green example.”

The other side of corruption in Indonesia | Elizabeth Pisani | TEDxUbud
This talk was given at a local TEDx event, produced independently of the TED Conferences. With over 17,000 islands, 700 languages, and 249 million people, Indonesia is truly an improbable nation. In this talk, Elizabeth explores what holds this country together and the unique role of corruption and patronage.
Elizabeth Pisani eats dog for dinner. She also argues with local politicians about corruption and idleness. The result of a just say yes rule she adopted for 2012, when she travelled 23,000 kilometers by boat, bus and motorbike through Indonesia. It's a country that has fascinated and maddened her since she first lived there over two decades ago. Her book Indonesia Etc.: Exploring the Improbable Nation, is a clear-eyed, though not unsympathetic, portrait of a complex and contradictory land.
In her day job Elizabeth studies risky behavior (when not engaging in it herself). She has a PhD in Infectious Disease Epidemiology and other degrees in Classical Chinese and Medical Demography. In a previous life, she was a political correspondent for Reuters and The Economist, covering stock markets, revolutions, and the messy end to the occupation of Tiananmen Square.
She has lived in a dozen countries and can flirt at a bar in several languages, including Indonesian.

Why the food revolution hasn't ended for Indonesia | Lisa Sibagariang | TEDxUbud
Lisa was born and raised in Siantar, a small town in North Sumatra. After dropping out of college she left her hometown and started a culinary career in Batam island, which eventually led her to Bali.
Joining the Locavore team in early 2017, Lisa went over to Nusantara when it opened in mid-2017, alongside Chef Putu, the former Sous Chef of Locavore.
Lisa loves the flow of a finely tuned kitchen, as she says 'when I am on the line with my team, dancing through the flow of the ticket printer rhythm and fire the dish right on time, receiving a good feedback from our guests—it's like an achievement, something that I will carry home'.
Although Lisa has only been cooking for six years, she holds her own in an industry still dominated by men and is currently working in Locavore's Lab on some special, new experiments remixing the best of Indonesia's traditional flavours with contemporary culinary techniques. Live: Social media’s role in the restaurant industry 社交媒体是如何影响印尼餐饮业的?
In today’s generation, the taste of the food is not enough. Restaurants and food businesses are catering to the major shift in how people consume their food, one that looks appealing in addition to its taste. Social media apps like Instagram, Facebook and Snapchat are behind this drive that’s changing the way people dine out. CGTN’s Silkina Ahluwalia speaks to a restaurant owner in Jakarta on how social influence has changed their business, the challenges of operating a restaurant in the social media era and what makes a successful restaurant in today’s digital age.
Make it nice, dessert that is | Will Goldfarb | TEDxUbud
This talk was given at a local TEDx event, produced independently of the TED Conferences. Will Goldfarb tells us how 15 years of failure made him into an overnight success. As a dessert alchemist he argues that the future is for people who make things, so make it nice.
Will Goldfarb is an internationally acclaimed pastry chef and has been in the spotlight for his dramatic interpretations for nearly 15 years.
Will was recently identified in Lisa Abend’s book The Sorcerer’s Apprentices, regarding the stagiares of El Bulli, as one of the finest chefs in the world to pass through the El Bulli kitchen. He was also listed in Ferran Adria’s recent book, Food for Art, Art for Food, as one of the most important chefs in the 20th century. This year, his desserts have featured in Sogood magazine, Pastry Revolution by Montagud, Emilie Baltz's Love.Food.Book, and Olivier Dupon's The New Patissiers.
Will currently resides in Bali and directs the research and development and pastry programs at Mejekawi and KU DE TA, Seminyak. June 2014 saw him return to a long burning love affair with Room4Dessert with the opening of his signature dessert, wine and cocktail bar in Ubud.

Painting a better future - art behind bars! | Nikita Nambiar | TEDxLavelleRoad
Art is our one true global language. It knows no nation, it favors no race, and it acknowledges no class. Nikita champions the value of making art in prison as a gateway to everlasting therapeutic change as art speaks to our need to reveal, heal, and transform. In prisons, therapy is neither desirable nor sought, but the majority of times a momentary abatement of stress and anxiety to get through a tough day is all that is needed.
Nikita Nambiar is a 15-year-old 10th Grader at The International School Bangalore. She is a 1M1B future leader whose work with incarcerated women has given her the opportunity to speak at the United Nations headquarters and at the 2018 Annual Meetings of the International Monetary Fund and World Bank Group held at Bali, Indonesia. She aspires to create a social change and redefine the way the incarcerated around the globe
are perceived through her project - “The Project Fresh Start ”, a Non-profit Organization which uses art as a platform to bridge the gap between punishment and parole for incarcerated women. She believes that resiliency and wellness can eliminate recidivism and aims to transform
the incarcerated through Tanjore art. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at

Louise Despont: Drawing from Life in Bali | Art21 New York Close Up
How deeply can a place permeate an artwork?
A native New Yorker now working in Bali, Louise Despont shares how her adopted island home shapes her intensive practice, informing the devotional, meditative, and fragile elements of her drawings. I know that the most important thing to make good work is time and space, says the artist, and living in Bali, that's where I was going to have the most of it.”
While the spirituality of Bali aligned with Despont's aesthetic, the tropical climate made her drawings vulnerable—a problem she solved with a dehumidified case. The artist herself was in a vulnerable place when she first arrived on the island in 2016, at the time of film; a long-standing relationship ended after they had moved to Bali together. I wasn't sure how I could make the work not being in love, she says, but she soon found that her drawing practice sustained her. Me in the studio with paper was there whether or not I was in a relationship.
For her 2016 exhibition at The Drawing Center in New York City, Despont created an immersive drawing that imagines energy as a physical body, documenting its lifecycle from embryo to a return to formlessness. Conceptual artist Aaron Taylor Kuffner's gamelatron—a robotic version of the traditional Balinese orchestra, the gamelan—transformed the space into a sanctuary, and gave viewers the opportunity to, as Despont puts it, travel through the drawings in their mind.
Louise Despont (b. 1983, New York, New York, USA) lives and works between New York and Bali, Indonesia. Learn more about the artist at:

GUATEMALA: TWO MEN EXECUTED BY FIRING SQUAD
(13 Sep 1996) Natural Sound
Two men were executed in Guatemala on Friday by a firing squad.
The two were sentenced to death for the kidnap, rape and murder of a four-year-old girl three years ago.
The execution was the first to take place in Guatemala in 13 years.
Roberto Giron, 49, and Pedro Castillo Mendoza, 39, were sentenced to death for the murder of a four-year-old girl.
These men kidnapped, raped and then killed Sonia Marisol Alvarez on the 18 April 1993.
Today (Friday) the execution took place at 12.00 G-M-T, in Canada prison, near Escuintla, 50 kms south of Guatemala City, after all appeals failed.
The execution had been suspended twice before, following an appeal by the Inter- American Commission for Human Rights of the Organization of American States (O-A- S).
The appeal was denied by Guatemalan Supreme Court.
Guatemalan President, Alvaro Arzu, prevented another appeal by the American Human Rights Convention.
He also denied a late petition by Pope John Paul II.
The last executions in the country happened in March 1983 during General Jose Efrain Rios Montt's government.
