Tekka Centre Singapore Info:
Tekka Centre is a multi-use building complex comprising a wet market, food centre and shops, located in the northern corner of Bukit Timah Road and Serangoon Road, in Little India, Singapore.
The case of Tekka Centre is often used to illustrate the complexities of Chinese language romanisation in Singapore. The market was originally known as Kandang Kerbau (or just K. K.), Malay for buffalo pens, referring to the slaughterhouses operating in the area until the 1920s, and the name still lives on in the nearby Kandang Kerbau Women's and Children's Hospital, Kandang Kerbau Police Station and the Kandang Kerbau Post Office. In Hokkien, the market was known as Tek Kia Kha, literally meaning foot of the small bamboos, as bamboo plants once grew on the banks of the Rochor Canal. This was adapted into the popular name Tekka Pasar (笛卡巴刹), where pasar is Malay for market.
The original market was built in 1915, and was located across the street between Hastings Road and Sungei Road. When it was torn down in 1982 and relocated at its present site, the new multi-use complex was named Zhujiao Centre (Chinese: 竹脚中心), the pinyin version of Tek Kha. However, to locals, especially non-Chinese, the new word Zhujiao was both hard to read and pronounce and bore no resemblance to Tekka. Eventually, the complex was officially renamed Tekka Centre in 2000 as it better reflected the history of the place. The market was closed for a significant renovation in 2008, reopening in 2009.
Little India's first air-conditioned mall, Tekka Mall, was built on the original site of the market in 2003. This building is currently being torn down to be rebuilt into a new shopping mall opening end 2019.
Tekka Centre remained a landmark in Little India, where different ethnic communities congregate. There are Chinese stallholders who speak Tamil, and vice versa. Shops sell traditional Indian costumes and inexpensive casual clothes. Some of the more notable shops include those selling Taoist and Buddhist paraphernalia, hardware shops, and tailors who can alter clothes in minutes.
On the ground floor is a hawker centre with stalls which sell Indian vegetarian meals, served on banana leaves or on stainless steel platters, besides Chinese vegetarian, North Indian and Malay food.
At the wet market which was on the same level, stalls sell fresh seafood, especially crabs from Sri Lanka, and vegetables. There are also many Chinese stalls selling vegetables that are specially flown in from India.
The centre is served by the adjacent Little India MRT Station. There are also an underground car park and two taxicab stands. Amenities nearby include the demolished shopping mall The Verge and Little India Arcade.

Allauddin's Briyani - MUST-EAT Singapore Indian Food at Tekka Centre!
Allauddin's Chicken Briyani in Singapore is fragrant and delicious!
►SINGAPORE FOOD GUIDE:
►SINGAPORE TRAVEL GUIDE:
If you’re looking for excellent Indian hawker food in Singapore, one of the best places to go is Tekka Centre, located in Little India. You’ll find a tempting variety of different Indian food stalls to choose from, many of them serving south Indian dishes. You can get paratha, banana leaf rice and curry, and what I chose to eat was chicken biryani from a famous stall called Allauddin’s.
But before beginning with my chicken biryani, I first had an onion paratha, a greasy and crispy pieces of fried bread filled with onions and served with a side of curry sauce. It was pretty good. But nothing compared to my plate of chicken biryani. The rice was fluffy and fragrant, and not too dry, but had some nice moisture to it. The chicken was incredible - it was soft, yet not mushy at all, but remained a fantastic silky texture. Finally, the curry sauce that my plate of biryani was served with is what really elevated the plate to the next level.
For a wonderful plate of chicken biryani in Singapore, head over to Allauddin's Chicken Biryani at Tekka Centre.

Singapore. Great Street Food from India in Tekka Hawker Centre
Tekka Centre is a landmark in the neighbourhood, serving up large dishes of fresh food to visitors and locals only steps away from the MRT at Little India. This bright yellow and orange warehouse was renovated a couple of years ago and has quickly become a hub for those in search of decent food at honest prices. It stands out from the rest of the hawker centres in Singapore, serving predominantly Indian food, including a great number of Halal dishes.
Inside it is set up like any other hawker centre, with rows of individual stores and tables around them, so you can grab a variety of dishes to try.
There is plenty of food to suit all palettes whether you hanker after rich curries or a simple dish of duck and rice. There are plenty of stalls to choose from, so follow the crowds and delicious smells.
Favourites include a spicy biyriani from Yakader nasi briyani, tender mutton with spiced rice and a portion size big enough to share. If you enjoy flatbread, check out the roti murtabak, try prata saga sambal berlada – an over-sized griddled dough filled with chicken, mutton or sardines and served with a side of spicy gravy and cucumbers.
There are also plenty of drinks to be had, freshly squeezed lime soda, juices made to your exact specifications.
Tekka Centre may not have all the frills of some of the other hawker centres in Singapore, but it does offer a great choice, including some rather unusual dishes, and a visit here is a fantastic way to experience Little India on a plate.

Tekka Centre is a multi-use building complex comprising a wet market, food centre and shops, located in the northern corner of Bukit Timah Road and Serangoon Road, in Little India, Singapore
Part wet market, part food centre and part shopping mall, Tekka Centre is a place where several ethnic communities converge to create a multicultural shopping fiesta. Established in 1915, Tekka Centre moved to its current location in 1982 and is a landmark in Little India.
Tekka Centre is a dining landmark in the Little India neighbourhood, serving up large dishes of fresh food to visitors and locals just steps away from the Little India MRT station. Housed in a colourful warehouse, it has quickly become a hub for those in search of decent food at honest prices.
The hawker centre stands out from the rest of the others spread throughout Singapore, serving predominantly Indian food as well as a great number of halal dishes. You’ll hardly miss the Tekka Centre – it’s the large building outside the MRT at Little India, which gets repainted every so often (once bright emerald green, then orange and yellow).
Inside, Tekka Centre is set up like any other hawker centre, with rows of individual stores and tables around them, so you can grab a variety of dishes to try. If you want to experience a genuine local shopping experience, head upstairs after you’ve eaten.
The higher floors sell everything from Bollywood music to silk for saris. There is plenty of food to suit all palates, whether you hanker after rich curries or a simple dish of duck and rice. There are plenty of stalls to choose from, so follow the crowds and delicious smells.
For those with a sweet tooth it is worth hunting down the much sought-after chi kak kueh, they may not be much to look at, with a sludge green covering and pale rice centre, but the filling is a paste of sugared mung beans that will leave you wanting more.
There are also plenty of drinks to be had, freshly squeezed lime soda, juices made to your exact specifications, or if you come later in the day you can even have a beer.
Tekka Centre may not have all the frills of some of the other hawker centres in Singapore, but it does offer a great choice, including some rather unusual dishes, and a visit here is a fantastic way to experience Little India on a plate.

Bugis Street Info:
Bugis, in Singapore, was renowned internationally from the 1950s to the 1980s for its nightly gathering of transvestites and transsexuals, a phenomenon which made it one of Singapore's top tourist destinations during that period.
In the mid-1980s, Bugis Street underwent major urban redevelopment into a retail complex of modern shopping malls, restaurants and nightspots mixed with regulated back-alley roadside vendors. Underground digging to construct the Bugis MRT station prior to that also caused the upheaval and termination of the nightly transgender sex bazaar culture, marking the end of a colorful and unique era in Singapore's history.
Today, the original Bugis Street is now a cobblestoned, relatively wide avenue sandwiched between the buildings of the Bugis Junction shopping complex. On the other hand, the lane presently touted as Bugis Street by the Singapore Tourist Promotion Board is actually developed from New Bugis Street, formerly Albert Street, and is billed as the largest street-shopping location in Singapore. An attempt by the Singapore Tourist Promotion Board to bring back the former exotic atmosphere was unsuccessful. Although the street is now not a well-known tourist destination, it is frequented by many Singaporeans
Little India Singapore Info:
Little India is an ethnic district in Singapore. It is located east of the Singapore River—across from Chinatown, located west of the river—and north of Kampong Glam. Both areas are part of the urban planning area of Rochor. Little India is commonly known as Tekka in the Indian Singaporean community.

Little India - Singapore
A cacophony of car horns, bicycle bells and vibrant chatter of its residents, Little India is one of the most vibrant and culturally authentic districts of Singapore. Take in the sights, sounds and smell as you immerse yourself in an authentic Indian experience in Singapore.
As its name suggests, Little India is Singapore’s foremost Indian enclave. Its charm lies in the fact that many of olden-day trades can still be found by its roadsides, alleys and back lanes. Fortune-tellers and their parrots, flower vendors selling garlands of jasmine and street-side newspaper vendors are just some of the interesting sights to be found.
Amid the pungent fragrances of spices and blooms is Serangoon Road and its inner lanes like Campbell Lane, Dunlop Street and Hindon Road, look out for stalls selling Ayurvedic massage oils, gold, incense and fabrics in a variety of textures. For a glimpse of Hindu rituals, do stop by the Sri Veeramakaliamman Temple, Sri Srinivasa Perumal Temple and Sri Vadapathira Kaliamman Temple, all within the Little India Precinct.
While in this cultural enclave, don’t pass up the opportunity to dine in one of the many well-established restaurants like Komala Villas (vegetarian), Banana Leaf Apolo and Muthu’s Curry, where you’ll find spicy classic South Indian fare inclusive of Fish Head Curry. Or taste some of the best Indian hawker food in Singapore such as roti prata (dough flat bread) and thosai (Indian-styled pancakes) at Tekka Market and Food Centre.
???? Singapore Hawker Food - Tekka Centre in Little India
The Tekka Centre is located in Little India, Singapore. It is home to a famous hawker centre, or food market, selling a wide variety of great street food. The food is predominately Indian, although Sri Lankan, Malay, Chinese and others are on offer. From the man making roti prata to the sellers of chicken biryani, this short video attempts to capture some of the atmosphere, sights and sounds that make the Tekka Centre such an interesting place to visit and, of course, eat.
LITTLE INDIA TEKKA WET MARKET
I wanted to make a short film in Singapore about something local this time. Something off the beaten track. Something not so pretty, but that would still tell an interesting story from the perspective of my camera. So I took the advice of one of my friends from Singapore, Ana Luis. She said I should check out Tekka Wet Market in Little India where I would find a huge enclosed warehouse with row after row of stalls filled with local people, exotic fresh seafood, prime cuts of meat, fragrant Indian spices and fresh fruits and vegetables. The name wet market btw... comes from the constant wetting or spraying down the stalls and floors around the fish and poultry. It can get nasty in there!
I met my friend and assistant for the shoot, Rosalita Selamat on location early in the morning and began shooting almost immediately. The smells of the Indian spices and the stink of some of the fish was enough to wake me out of whatever jet lag stupor I may have been experiencing as I entered the building! Rosa had a good chuckle when I kept leaning too far into the fish stalls and dragging my camera strap through the fish. Man, that strap was stinky after that! I'll also mention it was very hot and humid in there!
For this DSLR film I used a Canon 60D utilizing a mix of handheld shots, some slides and static shots with a small tripod. The 60D flip LCD came in handy for the run and gun style of shooting I prefer on these types of shoots where there's no time to set things up as the action is happening so fast. I had tweeted some friends before the shoot about proper shutter speeds to use when filming with indoor 50 kHz fluorescent lights in Asia. I wanted to avoid that nasty flicker you tend to get if you are not careful. I ended up varying those shutter speeds from 50 -- 100 depending on where I was shooting in the building. It seemed to take care of the problem. I used an H4n for audio but the room was really loud and bustling for interviewing.
After a long and sweaty shoot I was rewarded with a nice lunch at the Hawker Food Center (in the same building) consisting of fresh boneless fish masala, roti chapati and a nice hot cup of famous pulled Indian tea with my friend and assistant on this shoot, Rosalita Selamat. Rosa is a talented photographer who lives in Singapore. I want to thank her for her time and for keeping the shoot happy with her infectious laugh and smile.
So enjoy the short film from footage I shot there.
