Nine Emperor Gods 九皇大帝 Festival at Ba San Miao八仙廟 Temple Labuan 2015
For general information and entertainment.
Hope this video is of value to you all.
This video shows the ceremony before the sending off of the Nine Emperor Gods. This event always take place on the 9th of the ninth Chinese Lunar Month.
Every year, Labuan Ba Xian Miao (八仙廟) plays host to the Nine Emperor Gods (九皇大帝).
Nine Emperor Gods (九皇大帝 Jiǔ huáng dàdì) Festival is a Taoists festival. During this period, Taoists observe vegetarianism as spiritual cleansing. Devotees practise a strict vegetarian diet to cleanse and purify themselves during the nine days of the festival.
This year the festival took place on the 13th to 21st October 2015.
It is dedicated to the nine sons of the Great Dipper, a constellation of nine stars, two of which are invisible to the naked eye, of Dou Mu, the Goddess of the North Star who is believed to control the Books of Life and Death. Her sons are said to have the ability to cure illnesses and conferring luck, wealth, and long life to devotees.
It was normal to deify a person or a thing who had done tremendous good to a community in ancient China.
It begins on the eve of the ninth month with the raising of the Jiu Qu Deng (nine wicks oil lamp). This is a way to invite the divinities to the temple. It remains lighted for nine days to signify divine presence.
As a symbolic gesture of welcome, a procession to a nearby river or sea to welcome the Nine Emperor Gods (九皇大帝) is done first at the start of the festival. Both the welcome and send off of the spirits are done via the water.
At present, Ba San Miao八仙廟 (Eight Immortals Shrine) does not have any local Taoist priest.
All the Taoist priests, numbering twenty, in Labuan for the ceremony were specially invited from Phuket, Thailand. They were to perform the intricate ritual ceremony and at the same time initiate local worshippers into the art.
On the fifth day of the Ninth Lunar Month (17 Oct. 2015, Sat.) of the festival eight men from Phuket had their cheeks punctured
with skewers by assistants. Very little blood or scarring from the injury occurred. From the photos taken by a studio and others, the men looked like they were doing self-hypnosis before being pierced by spikes. A mind over matter feat. The Taoist devotees believed they were in trance when the perforation occurred.
In the evening, on the same day, they performed a procession which was a round trip, commencing from the Ba San Miao八仙 廟 (Eight Immortals Shrine). Leading the way were the men in trance-like state (but did not show it in appearance) with skewers across their cheeks, together with all the Taoist devotees and other interested people who found it bizarre or just enjoyed the evening walk. The procession made its way pass a mosque, schools, hotels, government departments, banks, a ferry terminal, shops and a superstore which is right in front of the oldest Kwang Fook Kong 廣福宮 Temple in Labuan Town.
Kwang Fook Kong (aka Kwong Fook Kung) 廣福宮 Temple, Labuan, celebrated the opening of its new temple building
(some said 100 years anniversary) with a carnival ceremony in 1978.

Chinese Figure Paintings of Eight Immortals (八仙) @ Golden Dragon Temple 金龍宮 @ Tebong, Melaka
Golden Dragon Temple 直望金龍宮 (Tebong Jinlong Temple) is located in Tebong, Alor Gajah, Malacca (Melaka). The beautiful Chinese brush paintings of the 8 Immortals (Chinese: 八仙; pinyin: Bāxiān) were done by my father-in-law, Li Thau Shau (at 2:06) , more than 10 years ago. They are displayed on the wall in the interior of this temple.
(Update: It is with deep regret to inform that the paintings are no longer in the temple as the temple is now renovated and all the interior decorations and artifacts were removed. This video is now the only memory of this awesome pictures that you can view.)
The Eight Immortals (Chinese: 八仙) are a group of legendary xian (immortals; transcendents; saints) in Chinese mythology. Each Immortal's power can be transferred to a power tool (法器) that can give life or destroy evil. Together, these eight tools are called Covert Eight Immortals (暗八仙 àn Bāxiān). Most of them are said to have been born in the Tang Dynasty or Song Dynasty. They are revered by the Taoists, and are also a popular element in the secular Chinese culture. They are said to live on a group of five islands in the Bohai Sea which includes Penglai Mountain-Island.
The Eight Immortals are:
钟离权、张果老、吕洞宾、李铁拐、何仙姑、蓝采和、韩湘子 和 曹国舅
Immortal Woman He (何仙姑 He Xiangu),
Royal Uncle Cao (曹国舅Cao Guojiu),
Iron-Crutch Li (李铁拐 Li Tieguai),
Lan Caihe 蓝采和,
Lu Dongbin, (吕洞宾 leader)
Philosopher Han Xiang (韩湘子 Han Xiang Zi),
Elder Zhang Guo (张果老 Zhang Guo Lao), and
Han Zhongli 汉钟离 (钟离权 Zhongli Quan).
The Eight Immortals are considered to be signs of prosperity and longevity, so they are popular themes in ancient art. They were frequent adornments on celadon vases. They were also common in sculptures owned by the nobility. Their most common appearance, however, was in paintings. Many silk paintings, wall murals, and wood block prints remain of the eight immortals. They were often depicted either together in one group, or alone to give more homage to that specific immortal.
An interesting feature of early Eight Immortal artworks is that they are often accompanied by jade hand maidens, commonly depicted servants of the higher ranked deities, or other images showing great spiritual power. This shows that early on the Eight Immortals quickly became eminent figures of the Taoist religion, and had great importance. We can see this importance is only heightened in the Ming dynasty and Qing dynasties. During these dynasties, the Eight Immortals are very frequently associated with other prominent spiritual deities in artwork. There are numerous paintings with them and the Three Stars (the gods of longevity, emolument, and good fortune) together. Also, other deities of importance, such as the Queen Mother of the West, are commonly seen in the company of the Eight Immortals.
The artworks of the Eight Immortals isn't limited to paintings or other visual arts. They are quite prominent in written works too. Authors and playwrights wrote numerous stories and plays on the Eight Immortals. One famous story that has been rewritten many times and turned into several plays (the most famous written by Mu Zhiyuan in the Yuan dynasty) is The Yellow-Millet Dream, which is the story of how Lǚ Dòngbīn met Zhongli Quan and began his path to immortality.
