Temple of the Six Banyan Trees - Liurong Temple- Guangzhou, China
This temple was built in 573 AD to house relics of Buddha received from India. The temple has had different names through history, but settled on Liu Rong or Six Banyan Trees Temple in 1100 A.D. when famous writer Su Dongpo wrote about the beautiful trees that once stood here. The Flowery Pagoda appears to be 9 stories high from the outside, but is actually 17 stories on the inside. The temple houses massive brass Buddhas each weighing 10-tons and being 3 meters or nearly 20 feet in height.

The Temple of the Six Banyan Trees or Liurong Si is a Buddhist temple in Guangzhou, China, originally built in AD 537.
The temple's proximity to foreign consulates in Guangzhou has made it a regular destination for families participating in the international adoption of children from China. Typically families receive blessings for their newly adopted children at this temple in front of the statue of Kuan Yin.
The Baozhuangyan Temple was first constructed by the monk Tanyu under orders from Emperor Wu of the Liang in AD 537. It was constructed to house the relics of Cambodian Buddhist saints which had been brought to Panyu (modern Guangzhou).
The temple was burned down and rebuilt during the Northern Song dynasty. Around the same time, Su Shi composed a poem Six Banyans (Liu Rong) in honor of a visit to the temple. It was since renamed in honor of the famous poem.
Flower Pagoda, the main structure of the temple, was built in 1097 and was named for its colorful exterior. The Flower Pagoda once had a square base in its architecture, but was given an octagonal shaped base after it was rebuilt in 1097. It was rebuilt again in 1373 after another fire in the early Ming dynasty period and restored in 1900.

This was my first day on my own in Gaungzhou. I was still completely jet lagged and honestly I don't even recognize myself in this video! I was completely overwhelmed with emotion the moment I entered this beautiful place. Hard to explain. I'm going to chalk up my naming mishaps and couldn't-hold-it-together-ness to the exhaustion. But I couldn't let those superficial things prevent me from sharing this incredible landmark with you all.

六榕寺位於中國廣東省廣州市越秀區的六榕路,為一座佛教寺廟,至今已有1460多年歷史,內有六榕花塔。六榕寺為廣州佛教聖地,亦為廣州旅遊景點及名勝古迹之一。大門上有一副對聯「一塔有碑留博士,六榕無樹記東坡」,為民國初年順德文人岑學侶撰寫,聯中「博士」指的是王勃,「東坡」指的是蘇軾,以紀念他們對六榕寺的貢獻。
南北朝時期,梁武帝蕭衍派他的母舅沙門曇裕大智法師到真臘(今柬埔寨)求得佛舍利帶回廣州後,便命令廣州刺史蕭譽建造了這座寺和塔,當時分別稱寶莊嚴寺和舍利塔。相傳唐上元二年(675年),初唐四傑之一的王勃來到廣州,應寶莊嚴寺主持之邀,揮毫寫下了《廣州寶莊嚴寺舍利塔記》。到唐朝高宗時重修。五代南漢時改為長壽寺,每逢上元節、中秋節,人們都蜂擁到寺裡,點燈祈求豐年。到宋太宗時再重修,改名淨慧寺。後毀於火災,塔亦被毀。宋哲宗年間,廣州人林修,在原塔基下重建千佛塔,並將佛舍利埋於塔下。北宋元符三年(1110年),蘇軾被貶嶺南時,從海南北歸,路經廣州,時淨慧寺僧人慕東坡之名,力邀其為寺題字。蘇東坡見寺內有六棵枝葉繁盛的古榕,便欣然提筆寫下「六榕」二字,字為楷體,遒麗奇雅,厚重雍容。明成祖永樂九年(1411年)改名為六榕寺。蘇軾所題匾額,今天仍高懸於寺門上。[1]

千佛塔,廣州人俗稱花塔,此塔塔基是用花崗岩石砌築的九井環基,塔頂有元至正十八年(1358年)鑄造的千佛大銅柱,連上面的九霄盤、寶珠及下垂的鐵練總重達5000公斤。 花塔從北宋重修到現在已有900年的歷史,中間又經過多次重修,直到明朝嘉靖二十八年由住持德隱進行了一次大修,花塔的面貌,基本上與今天一樣。
宋代廣州淨慧寺山門在今中山六路,明初割寺之半為永豐倉,山門亦在被割之列,洪武八年(1375年)在千佛東重建覺皇殿,改後山門東向。民國十年(1921年),市政府拆城築路,在六榕寺東部先後闢建花塔街(今六榕路)和淨慧公園(今廣東迎賓館),以致山門再往後退與天王殿相連,寺院範圍再次縮小。而今佔地面積不足八千平方米,塔、殿、堂、樓、閣、廊、舍等建築總面積4350平方米。此外,東北距寺院三公里處之白雲山柯子嶺,尚有一片面積為4315平方米的祖師墓塔杯,1996年闢建為墓圓。
