Japan Trip - DAY 02 (Kyoto) [Onsen Experience]
2nd day of my Japan trip! (March, 21). Explored the streets of Kyoto and visited Mt Kurama. The small village lies at the foot of Mt Kurama, there's a temple called Kurama-dera (a Buddhist temple founded in the 8th century), and of course, an open-air Onsen.

How to do Japanese Onsen (adventures inside a traditional Japanese public bath)
Onsen (n): Japanese public bath.
Japanese onsen is one of my favorite things in the entire world. I go to the public baths twice a month (at least) - all over Japan. And one thing I've noticed is that no one forgets their first onsen experience.
Which is why I made this video.
My first time at onsen was... awkward. And terrifying. And it took nearly 12 more months of living in Japan before I felt comfortable going again (and then, only because my friend kept begging me).
Getting naked with strangers and sitting in a bath with a bunch of naked ladies can be awkward.
I believe information is power. So I made this video, letting people know exactly what to expect when you go to a Japanese onsen or sento.
And no, you're not going to see any boobies in this video.
Yumori no Sato Onsen (in Chofu) was nice enough to let me film the baths early in the morning (before they opened). Ryosuke and I's old house was pretty close - I HIGHLY recommend going if you're visiting Tokyo.
The water is dark because it is rich with minerals (and 100% natural).
This wasn't a sponsored video, by the way (since people seem to be curious). But I 100% recommend going to Yumori no Sato - and I am sooooo thankful to them for letting me film there.
Normally taking photos/videos/anything inside an onsen is WAY off limits.
To people actually reading this: what was YOUR first onsen experience like?

My First Japanese Onsen Experience | Nozawa Onsen
The Japanese Onsen, or Japanese hot spring, are a way of life in Japan. At the foothills of Mt. Kenashi lies the sleepy ski town of Nozawa Onsen. Home to just under 4000 people, its built on local farming and seasonal tourism.
That is because, until recently, very few homes in town had their own showers or baths. The local onsen was the daily bathing ritual - and for many villagers it still is.
Throughout the village there’s about thirty different types of hot springs and fourteen public baths.
Most are tucked away behind beautiful wooden doors hidden from the untrained tourist eye.
For my first onsen experience, I ventured into the traditionally-styled Furusato No Yu.
For my second Japanese onsen, I went into SPArena - a newly renovated Onsen which incorporates indoor/outdoor pools.
The big difference between SPArena and the other onsens around town is that you can wear your bathing suit and men/women/children can bath together.
There’s also a restaurant and massage room. It looks like a giant YMCA.
Throw your stuff in a locker, hit the showers and then take your pick on one of the oversized hot tubs!
And perhaps the greatest aspect of this experience, after a soothing soak is the relax room!
Thanks to an invitation by the great staff over at the Ryokan Sakaya hotel, I upgraded from the staff lodge and checked into the one of the most luxurious traditional Japanese hotels in town.
I'm escorted to my room by a lovely little woman who explains the layout and then prepares a welcoming green tea.
She then says that I needed to change into a more appropriate outfit for dinner, and proceeds to show me how.
Dressed to impress, I make my way downstairs to meet the director of the Nozawa Onsen Ski School and his family for dinner. And I had no idea what to expect…
What came next is me joyfully lost in sake-infused state of bold flavors and new discoveries.

FEATURES IN THIS EPISODE:
Shijo-Omiya Station
This is the train that takes you directly to Arashiyama Station, since I am staying at Hotel M Plus Omiya.
Tips: Always Plan your trip in advance – so everything is easily accessible.
Arashiyama Bamboo Forest
The Bamboo Forest is one of the major Tourist Site here in Kyoto, the place is beautiful and you can only appreciate this in its glory around 6 in the morning. Around 7am the tour bus will start to come and trying to get your perfect video or photo would be nearly impossible. So do come early, as they say it the early bird gets the kill
Arabica Coffee
Arabica Coffee is located in front of the Arashiyama Mountain, Ooi River, and Togetsukyo Bridge. Arashiyama is famous for the Tenryū-ji, a UNESCO World Heritage temple with heavenly garden, and the famous Arashiyama Bamboo Grove.
So if you are an avid coffee lover as I am or simply itching to get your morning coffee fix after that early trip to the Bamboo Forest (if you followed my guide) then this will wake you up and prep you ready for your Next adventure..
Generally, peak times are during the afternoon. So to avoid a long wait, please visit them in the morning for a coffee with an amazing view.
Other recommend place and activities in Arashiyama
- Arashiyama Monkey Park
- Tenryu-Ji Temple
- Boat Rental in Arashiyama
- Tenzan-no-yu Onsen (Hot Spring)
Menbakaichidai Fire Ramen
Oh boy, if you love Ramen or generally just a foodie like I am, you must visit this restaurant.
Warning though: they do use a lot of green onion and unfortunately it’s a necessary ingredient to make the Fire go KABOOM – Fortunately I love onion.
The Broth itself is smooth and not too thick, it almost felt like Gogyo Ramen (Burnt Ramen) – as you can taste the burnt onion which actually amplifies the Ramen flavour to a whole new level.
Reservation: Not needed – they do not take reservation
My Tips: Come on off hours aka not during Lunch time or Dinner, try and come between the popular dining hours
If you have read this far down, do feel free to support me by commenting, thumbs up and subscribing goes along way.
And see you next week for more Japan Adventures

Hiya everyone! So here is the next vlog or the seventh video for my friends and I trip to Hong Kong and Japan. Out of the 5 days in Kyoto, we spent our 4th day in Osaka and Kobe. TRAVEL VLOG • Kyoto Day 1 | Golden Temple and Arashiyama ????Grove | wendy in the wild
TRAVEL VLOG of Kyoto Day 1. Our first full day in Kyoto! After stopping for the best iced matcha we've ever had, we started our day at the Kinkaku-ji, or the Golden Temple. We explored the surroundings and paid our respects. Then, we took a bus to Arashiyama Bamboo Grove. The Grove itself was beautiful, but we loved the nearby river and quiet neighborhoods even more. There is a single coffee shop by the river that makes a great latte and is so aesthetic. I highly recommended stopping there. The nature was so lush. It felt like we were walking around in a Studio Ghibli movie. We ended the night at the Tenzan No Yu Onsen (no filming allowed!) to soak in the outdoor hot springs and eat some delicious food. The next vlog is the last in the Japan series!
Hope you enjoy watching!
