Kanazawa’s Teramachi: Two Distinctive Temple Districts in One | Nippon.com: Japan in Video
The Teramachi area of Kanazawa, Ishikawa Prefecture, is one of the city’s three major clusters of temples dating back to the Edo period (1600–1868), when Kanazawa was the seat of the powerful Maeda clan, rulers of the Kaga domain. In 2012 Teramachi—literally “temple town”—was designated as an “important preservation district for groups of traditional buildings.” The designated district actually consists of two areas. The first is Noda Teramachi. This is one of the three districts into which Maeda Toshitsune (1594–1658), third lord of the domain, had all the city’s temples concentrated for administrative purposes. It lies along the old Noda Kaidō (Noda Highway), and to this day the thoroughfare passes by a series of Edo-period temples with impressive gates and walls. The second area is Izumi Teramachi, which developed as a temple district more gradually than Noda Teramachi and has a different aspect, featuring a mixture of temples and townhouses (“machiya”).
A townhouse built in 1892, formerly consisting of family quarters above a street-level shop, has been converted into a guest house accommodating just one party a night. Here visitors can experience the atmosphere of a traditional Japanese residence. Another townhouse, which was built 150 years ago, has been converted into a gallery. As these examples show, contemporary owners are finding new ways of using the area’s buildings while preserving the streetscape.

A Trip To Kanazawa's Nishi Chaya And Teramachi Temple Districts
I took out my iPhone and ZhiYun Smooth Q many times on my trip to Japan! This day I filmed my walk through Kanazawa's Nishi Chaya and Teramachi districts.
Kanazawa Teramachi temples walk , Japan - Virtual Trip
The interest in coming here is to continue the walk to the temple district of Teramachi. In some parts of the district are exposed plans where you can see the incredible abundance of temples. These plans are oddly often upside down, so you get lost a little. There are in total more than 70 temples spread throughout the area. As can be seen, there is a whole series along Teramachi-dori Avenue (the one along the river on the plan). But there is also to the north on the plan, (but in reality towards the south) on the avenue Minami Odori (the great perpendicular which leaves from the river) and in all the small streets which go to the east ( to the west on the map), especially the small street indicated by the red inset below.
It is in this last street that we find the temple Ninja-dera or Myoryuji, a small temple in which we can admire a series of traps and secret passages. This temple is open from 9 am to 4:30 pm and the entrance costs 800 yen.

Even in Japan, there are temples being neglected and abandoned because population of the world is heading in the direction of selfish and reflective meaningless life practices.

Nagamachi (長町) was a samurai district located at the foot of the former Kanazawa Castle, where samurai and their families used to reside. The area preserves a historic atmosphere with its remaining samurai residences, earthen walls, private entrance gates, narrow lanes and water canals.

Kanazawa Utatsuyama and Higashiyama Temple area | Canon 80D | Virtual Trip
When you learn about the city of Kanazawa in Japan, you can easily find information about its historic districts, its park and its castle. On the other hand, one finds only little information on its temples, which count however by hundred. Discreet, small and lost behind some of the city's best-known historic districts, they seem completely abandoned by the majority of tourists.
However, by extending the city's tour beyond the beaten track, we are quickly struck by the impressive number of places of worship. Higashi Chaya is himself inside the temple district generally called Utatsuyama, and Nishi Chaya is attached to Tera machi, the other big district of the temples of the city.

Visit Kanazawa, Japan Day 3: Important Ninja Temple, Bits and Bytes
I wanted to tour the Ninja Temple with its hidden doors, etc., but tours are in Japanese only and no cameras/videos! That takes care of that...
However, Kanazawa has adorable, intact and walkable districts. Nagamachi samurai and Higashi Chaya entertainment (Geisha) districts are just two that have survived in good condition.

Japan Trip (2017) - Chapter 10: Kanazawa (Conveyor belt sushi, Kenroku-en Gardens & shiba dog!)
Kanazawa was one of those cities where I had no expectations at all. I went completely blind in exploring it. They say these kind of experiences are usually the best ones, and I completely agree with that statement after visiting Kanazawa!
It is a more cultural and artistic city. The first thing you notice when you enter the city is the variety of sculptures, statues and interesting looking buildings. It is a very rich looking city. With that said though, some locals told me the city has some dead areas, and that can be explained by the fact that they're putting most of their money towards the reconstruction of Kanazawa castle, which I do visit and cover in the video.
The first thing I did was go to Soku's guest house. He has a very cute shiba japanese dog called Gao! It was probably the best place I've stayed at yet! He also had a Super Famicom game system with many Japanese games I've never seen before! Who needs a SNES Classic when you get the real deal?
For diner, after looking at the prices of one of the best sushi restaurants in the city (and saying heck nooo! to myself), I went to eat at another conveyor belt restaurant, Mori Mori sushi. While I was waiting in line to actually enter the restaurant, I talked to a mother with her two children and she told me it was one of the best and cheapest places to eat sushi. According to her, there aren't a lot of conveyor belt restaurants in Japan, believe it or not! This is why there are always lineups. She also said that the delicious season for sushi is usually in winter, but it was still delicious and fresh anyways!
When I visited, it was a national holiday, so almost nobody was out! In the many districts I've visited, barely anyone was there. The first district was Higashiyama Higashi Chaya district. It is known for its geisha tea ceremonies that only happen at night. The second was Nishi Chaya district. For the same reason, you need to reserve and I obviously didn't do that!
The third and final district is Nagamachi Chaya district, also known as the old ninja district. Remains of houses of old lords can be found there. It is also in this district that you can find the Ninja Temple! No photos inside! Trust me when I say this though, they show you all the secret and hidden paths that you could find in the temple and more! They were so sneaky!
Speaking of art, I visited the beautiful Kenroku-en gardens close to Kanazawa castle. Kanazawa castle was huge! The castle parks were also huge, but so empty. It's crazy to think emperors lived in these things at the time! The castle itself is very different from Matsumoto's. It has a lot of length, and its purpose was to be able to see invaders from afar and move from one gate to the other to escape faster if needed. You could seal off invaders on one side!
Finally, there is the Omi-cho market close to Takayama station. It's kind of like Nakano Broadway, but with a speciality in selling food!
Overall, I enjoyed my visit to Kanazawa. The people seemed a lot nicer than other places and the food was very good.
Enjoy!
