Restoring Texas's Historic Courthouses
Brantley Hightower, AIA, discusses the importance of preserving this important part of Texas's architectural legacy.
ECOREGIONS OF TEXAS - The Balcones Escarpment Part 1
The Balcones Escarpment is an interesting geological feature which starts near Del Rio, runs eastward to San Antonio, and then northeastward up the IH 35 corridor all the way to Georgetown. Interstate 35 runs just east of the fault line and follows the length of the Texas Blackland Prairie region. When driving between San Antonio and Dallas on IH 35, you will see (almost exclusively) Blackland Prairie (this excludes IH 35W to Fort Worth because it enters the crosstimbers and grand prairie regions). The prairie is easy to recognize with small hackberry trees which grow along fence lines, rich black soil, fields, and wild sunflowers which grow everywhere. Other towns within the Blackland Prairie are Waco, Temple, Belton, Taylor, Seguin, Lockhart, Plano, Dallas, Frisco, Hillsboro, Corsicana, Rockwall, Marlin, Mexia, and many others. Dallas, Rockwall, and Collin Counties are the only three Texas counties which lie completely within the Texas Blackland Prairies. (Eco-Region 32 according to EPA maps) .
Cities which strattle the Balcones Escarpment are Del Rio, San Antonio, New Braunfels, San Marcos, Austin, Round Rock, and Georgetown.
Towns which lie within the Balcones Canyonlands region are Blanco, Wimberly, Dripping Springs, Spring Branch, Boerne, Kerrville, Comfort, Kendalia, Waring, Sisterdale, Bandera, Medina, Leakey, Utopia, Concan, Bulverde, Grey Forest, Leander, Lakeway, and Bee Cave.
Personally, I believe the most scenic Hill Country drive is Ranch Road 337 between Medina and Leakey, just a short drive NW of San Antonio.
EPA ECOREGIONS:
Level I - Great Plains (9);
Level II - South Central Semiarid Prairies (9.4);
Level III - Texas Blackland Prairies (32) MEETS the Edwards Plateau (30);
Level IV - Northern Blackland Prairie (32a) MEETS the Balcones Canyonlands (30c).

Boeing B-17G Flying Fortress “Madras Maiden - Erickson Aircraft Collection
The Erickson Aircraft Collection’s B-17G Bomber was manufactured by Lockheed-Vega and delivered to the U.S.A.A.F. on October 16, 1944. It was modified to be a “Pathfinder” B-17, equipped with the latest ground scanning H2X radar for nighttime bombing. From 1944-1959 he aircraft spent its entire military career as a research and development aircraft before being dropped from the U.S.A.F. inventory in May 1959. In 1961, Albany Building Corporation purchased the B-17 and used it for hauling freight, before selling it in 1963 to Dothan Aviation Corp. where it was used as an agriculture sprayer. In 1979, Doc Hospers of Fort Worth, Texas purchased the airplane and restored it to flying condition. The airplane was then sold to Jerry Yagen at the Military Aviation Museum in 2009. In 2013, N3701G was sold to the Erickson Collection, an aviation museum in Madras Oregon. Restored to her combat configuration and painted in the colors of the 381st Bomb Group, and sporting the Madras Maiden nose-art. Of the B-17 “Pathfinders” that were built, it is the only one left in existence.
Old To New: Remodel, Restore, Revitalize
For decades, downtown was the hub of the economic and social lives of rural residents across North Dakota. Since their heyday in the 50s, small town business districts have been shrinking. Many small communities in North Dakota are on the cusp of extinction. As the rural population declines and the state's agriculture-based economy struggles, boarded buildings and empty storefronts now dominate once prosperous streets.
Seeking to reverse years of decline, some local organizations are taking steps to revitalize their communities. Across the state community groups and entrepreneurs with vision are rehabilitating old buildings and putting them to new uses -- renewing their sense of identity in the process.
An empty hardware store becomes a high tech incubator
A church is converted into a library
A former jail becomes a restaurant
An abandoned school house turns into a family
Transformations are occurring across the State of North Dakota with a former school building becoming a bed and breakfast, and a long dormant opera house filled with performers and audiences once more. Each effort is helping small towns preserve their identity and quality of life, while strengthening the local economy.
