A cyclo trip around Hoan Kiem Lake, Hanoi, Vietnam
We finally gave in and hired a cyclo to take us on a short ride around the lake. We saw Thap Rua (Tortoise Tower), Martyrs' Monument, and KFC.
Legendary Hoan Kiem Turtle Hanoi Vietnam - Last footage before he died
While filming in Hanoi with our Drone camera with YESD organization, we spotted the legendary Hoan Kiem turtle near to the turtle tower in the middle of the lake. Less than a month after we made this footage, the turtle passed away and we found out that we recorded the last footage ever of the turtle. Also, it is the only known aerial footage ever made of this legendary turtle, known as Cụ Rùa, meaning “great grandfather turtle” in Vietnamese. We made this footage on the 22nd of December 2015, one day after the official date that it was claimed the last time the turtle was seen alive. This turtle is incredibly rare as it believed that there are only 4 in the whole world. Now there are only three living specimens of the Rafetus swinhoei turtle remaining in the world.
Planet Hero feels very blessed to have seen the legendary Hoan Kiem turtle.

Hanoi, Huan Kiem Lake P-1, Vietnam 28.12.2017
Ho Hoan Kiem (Hoan Kiem Lake) is number 1 attraction in Hanoi, the capital city of Vietnam. The Lake is located in the center of the city in Old Quarter and is the most visited place in Hanoi by locals as well as tourist because of its manifold charms and attractions.
‘Ho Huan Kiem’ means ‘Lake of the Returned Sword’ which allures to an interesting local myth. According to the legend, Emperor Le Loi (1384-1433) of Vietnam was given a sword by the Dragon King who lived in the Lake, to help him liberate his land from Chinese yoke by revolting against Ming Dynasty of China. After the country stood liberated, one day in 1428, when the Emperor was boating in the lake, a Golden Turtle, Kim Qui appeared and asked him to return the sword of Dragon King. He returned the sword with thanks and hence the name of the lake. A Turtle Tower (Thap Rua) is standing in the Lake to remind the legend. It water is green, so it was also called Luc Thuy Lake (Green Water Lake). Its area is about 30 acres. There is a small island in the lake which is called Jade Island on which the Temple of the Jade Mountain (Chua Ngoc Son) was built in 18th century. The Island is a beautiful religious as well as cultural place and is connected to the city by a red-colored iconic wooden bridge called Cau The Huc (Huc Bridge). The Lake and surrounding area has great value for the people of Hanoi who gather around the lake and its adjacent parks to enjoy leisure time in enchanting atmosphere. Turtle Tower in Hoan Kiem Lake Viet Nam- Tháp Rùa Hồ Hoàn Kiếm Hà Nội về đêm
The historic Turtle Tower, known as Tháp Rùa in Vietnamese, is a small tower standing on an islet in the middle of Hoan Kiem Lake in Hanoi. It is believed that the structure was erected to commemorate one of the greatest heroes of Vietnam, Le Loi, who founded the Le dynasty. Even though the tower is in a state of disrepair, it is still viewed as a symbol of peace, harmony, and patriotism by the people of Vietnam.
Initially, the small islet featured the Ta Vong Temple that was built during the 17th-18th century by the Trinh rulers. However, it disappeared during the reign of the powerful Nguyens. The foundation of the tower traces back to the end of the 19th century when Vietnam was controlled by the French forces.
A Vietnamese bureaucrat working for the French government received permission to construct a tower in memory of Le Loi, a warrior who led the Vietnamese people to victory against the forces of Ming dynasty in the 15th century. Legend has it that Le Loi was endowed with great strength by a mystical sword given by Kim Qui (the Golden Turtle God), allowing him to unite the forces and secure victory. It is believed that the sword is now guarded by a magical turtle in the depths of the Hoan Kiem Lake.
When the tower was constructed, the Vietnamese official in charge was involved in a scandal. He secretly tried to bury the remains of his father on the islet, which was considered auspicious as per the customs of feng shui. However, the people were aware of his intentions and so his father’s body was removed.
Architecture
The Turtle Tower has a unique combination of local Vietnamese and French colonial architecture. The three-storied tower is constructed on a large heap of land measuring 350 square meters. It gradually narrows to the top since its first two stories are larger than the third. The ground floor, as well as the first floors, has three doors on the eastern and western sides while two doors are found on the southern and northern sides. The first and the top floor are fenced with horizontal and vertical rails.
Atop the Turtle Tower, stood a version of the “Statue of Liberty”, which was placed by the French. However, it was removed when the Tran Trong Kim regime gained control of the city in 1945. During the French rule, the local people would often hang Vietnam’s revolutionary flag from the tower in order to show their defiant spirit.

Hoàn Kiếm Lake
Settlements Hanoi
Hoan Kiem Lake (Vietnamese: Hồ Hoàn Kiếm, meaning Lake of the Returned Sword or Lake of the Restored Sword), also known as Hồ Gươm (Sword Lake), is a lake in the historical center of Hanoi, the capital city of Vietnam. The lake is one of the major scenic spots in the city and serves as a focal point for its public life.
History[edit]
According to the legend, in early 1428, Emperor Lê Lợi was boating on the lake when a Golden Turtle God (Kim Qui) surfaced and asked for his magic sword, Heaven's Will. Lợi concluded that Kim Qui had come to reclaim the sword that its master, a local God, the Dragon King (Long Vương) had given Lợi some time earlier, during his revolt against Ming China. Later, Lợi gave the sword back to the turtle after he finished fighting off the Chinese. Lợi renamed the lake to commemorate this event, from its former name Luc Thuy meaning Green Water. The Turtle Tower (Thap Rùa) standing on a small island near the centre of lake is linked to the legend. The first name of Hoàn Kiếm lake is Tả Vọng, when the King haven't gave the Magical Sword back to the Golden Turtle God.
The Huc Bridge
Large soft-shell turtles, either of the species Rafetus swinhoei or a separate species named Rafetus leloi in honor of the emperor, had been sighted in the lake for many years. The last known individual was found dead on January 19, 2016. There are three remaining turtles of the species R. swinhoei.
Near the northern shore of the lake lies Jade Island on which the Temple of the Jade Mountain (Ngoc Son Temple) stands. The temple was erected in the 18th century. It honors the 13th-century military leader Tran Hung Dao who distinguished himself in the fight against the Yuan Dynasty, Van Xuong, a scholar, and Nguyen Van Sieu, a Confucian master and famous writer in charge of repairs made to the temple in 1864. Jade Island is connected to the shore by the wooden red-painted The Huc Bridge (The Huc, meaning Morning Sunlight Bridge).

Touristic Center of Hanoi by Day and Night - Vietnam 4K Travel Channel
The tourist center of Hanoi includes the old town and the area around the Hoan Kiem Lake. The old neighborhoods, that have largely withstood the colonisation of France and the bombing of the Americans during the Vietnam war, house a huge number of small businesses, hotels, restaurants and bars. The lively traffic makes the narrow streets almost impassable.
Nevertheless, you will find everything you need in this area. Some of the roads are organized by product group. For example, in the Pho Hang Dau you can buy almost exclusively shoes.
The Hoan Kiem Lake is the most famous lake in the heart of Hanoi. It lies between the Old Town and the former French colonial quarter. In the past it was connected to the red river and served as retention basin. Today, many channels and the connection to the Red River are filled.
Along the lakeside you find recreation areas.
The Hoan Kiem Lake was the habitat of the favorite animal of the Vietnamese people, the giant tortoise Cu Rùa. It passed away on January 21, 2016 at the age of 120 years.
Landmark of Hanoi is the Turtle Tower (Thap Rua) on a small island in the lake.
The lake and the Turtle Tower are connected to a legend. Once, a turtle appeared to the poor fisherman Le Loi and gave him a magical sword with which he could free Vietnam from the Chinese and crown himself king. As the turtle wanted to have the sword back, it was transformed into a dragon and plunged into the lake. To commemorate these events, Le Loi let build the tower.
During our evening walk through the Le Thai To, we discover the temple with the same name, which is also connected to the legend of the sword.
On another island is the Ngoc Son Temple, the Temple of the Jade Mountain. It is the most visited temple of Hanoi and dedicated to General Tran Hung Dao, who expelled the Mongols in the 13th century. The island is connected with the mainland via the picturesque Huc Bridge, Cầu Thê Húc.
The large square with the illuminated fountain, on the northern shore of the lake, serves as a meeting place of the youth.
A number of excellent restaurants can be found along the promenade.

Dennoch findet man in diesem Viertel alles was man benötigt.
