Annapolis is the capital of the U.S. state of Maryland, as well as the county seat of Anne Arundel County. Situated on the Chesapeake Bay at the mouth of the Severn River, 25 miles (40 km) south of Baltimore and about 30 miles (50 km) east of Washington, DC, Annapolis is part of the Baltimore–Washington metropolitan area. Its population was measured at 38,394 by the 2010 census.
The city served as the seat of the Continental Congress in 1783–84 and was the site of the 1786 Annapolis Convention (which called for the Constitutional Convention held the following year) and the Annapolis Peace Conference, held in 2007. Annapolis is the home of St. John's College as well as the United States Naval Academy.
The United States Naval Academy (also known as USNA, Annapolis, or simply Navy) is a four-year coeducational federal service academy in Annapolis, Maryland, United States. Established in 1845 under Secretary of the Navy George Bancroft, it is the second oldest of the United States' five service academies, and educates officers for commissioning primarily into the United States Navy and United States Marine Corps. The 338-acre (137 ha) campus is located on the former grounds of Fort Severn at the confluence of the Severn River and Chesapeake Bay in Anne Arundel County, 33 miles (53 km) east of Washington, D.C. and 26 miles (42 km) southeast of Baltimore. The entire campus is a National Historic Landmark and home to many historic sites, buildings, and monuments. Candidates for admission generally must both apply directly to the academy and receive a nomination, usually from a Member of Congress. Students are officers-in-training and are referred to as midshipmen. Tuition for midshipmen is fully funded by the Navy in exchange for an active duty service obligation upon graduation. Approximately 1,200 plebes (an abbreviation of the Ancient Roman word plebeian) enter the Academy each summer for the rigorous Plebe Summer, but only about 1,000 midshipmen graduate. Graduates are usually commissioned as ensigns in the Navy or second lieutenants in the Marine Corps, but a small number can also be cross-commissioned as officers in other U.S. services, and the services of allied nations. The United States Naval Academy has some of the highest paid graduates in the country according to starting salary.[5] The academic program grants a bachelor of science degree with a curriculum that grades midshipmen's performance upon a broad academic program, military leadership performance, and mandatory participation in competitive athletics. Midshipmen are required to adhere to the academy's Honor Concept.
Homeschooling Laws in Washington State
If you homeschool in Washington state, be sure to know the laws and what you are getting yourself into. What are the requirements?
If you're living in Washington and you are planning to homeschool your children, there are a few homeschooling laws in Washington state that you'll need to be aware of in order to be legal.
In order to qualify for homeschooling you'll need to notify your local school district of your intent to homeschool. A from is required to be filled out including your child's name, age and your name and address.
You will then submit this form to the local school district. You'll also need the information here so that the school district knows what your plans are. Any child not in public school by age 8 should have these forms on file with the local school district.
This form keeps the school from being in trouble if your child is not in attendance. It also protects you and your child from truancy laws.
You'll need to either have 45 quarter units of college level credits, go through a homeschooling group or attend a parents qualifying course. You could also work with a certified teacher who meets said requirements.
When considering homeschooling laws in Washington state you'll need to keep track of the hours your child is doing school work so that you can prove your child is receiving the required number of hours of education. You'll also need to keep track of attendance on a daily basis.
Homeschooled students have all of the same opportunities of public school students. Any homeschooled student may still participate in any public school class offerings including sports, music, drama and similar classes. Homeschool instruction can be part time or full time as long as the information is on file with the local school district.
Homeschooling laws in Washington state stipulate that children should learn 11 required subjects but these can be rolled together into one or two subjects such as a unit in science requiring reading, history and health of a species.

Overview:
Studies from the Center for Disease Control (CDC) and the Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA) show that a child struggling with childhood obesity has at least an 80% likelihood of carrying that struggle into adulthood. Today 13 million (approximately 17%) children in the United States are considered obese, and Washington State falls just short of this at an estimated 11%. While trends within the last decade have shown that these numbers are not rapidly increasing, they are not actively decreasing either. Needless to say, childhood obesity – closely linked to other health risks such as heart disease, stroke, type 2 diabetes, certain cancers, among others – presents a major threat to the future health of our nation and state.
Half of the battle is with physical activity, or lack thereof. According to the CDC’s “School Health Policies and Programs Study,” less than 10% of elementary, middle, and high schools nationwide meet the national standards for physical education, which are 150 minutes per week for Grades K-5 and 225 minutes per week for grades 6-12. With increased pressure for standardized testing results from districts due to budget and spending cuts, public schools often choose to cut PE class time before other academic classes.
Schools in Washington State are no exception. During the most recent legislative session Representative Marcus Ricelli (3rd Legislative District) sponsored House Bill 2669, proposing to raise PE requirements in Washington public schools to meet national standards by the 2020-2021 school year. Unfortunately, HB 2669 did not pass before the fiscal cutoff, but because this bill advocates such an important part of childhood education, it cannot be forgotten. Children who learn healthy exercise habits at a young age are much more likely to carry those habits into adulthood; a crucial step in the fight against obesity.
Certainly, increasing mandatory PE time in schools will prove a hassle for Washington school districts as they have to reshuffle schedules, staff, and funding, but the reward is well worth the initial struggle. Currently health care costs relating to childhood obesity cost the nation around $14 billion annually in addition to the emotional and physical costs to those who suffer from the condition and their families. Even at a little cost to school districts, increased physical education will not only eliminate greater costs in the long run, but will undeniably serve to better the education, health, and, most importantly, lives of our state’s, and nation’s, children. Thus, we cannot let necessary progress face the impediment of legislative discouragement on account of the fiscal schedule.
This petition aims to ensure the reintroduction of HB 2669 in the next legislative session for another chance to pass and make proper and necessary physical education a reality in Washington schools. For the benefit of children across our state and across our nation, please take just a moment of your time to show your support for Representative Ricelli’s bill and chance for every child to lead an active and healthy life.

Earthquakes of Cascadia: 1979 - 2019
The widely-felt M6.3 earthquake of August 29, 2019 on the Blanco Fracture Zone was only the most recent of many moderate-size earthquakes to strike this region off of the Oregon coast. As this animation shows, such earthquakes are common along the boundaries of the Juan de Fuca plate with the Pacific Plate, which also includes the Juan de Fuca Ridge, the Gorda Ridge, and the Mendocino Fracture Zone. Fortunately these events rarely pose a tsunami hazard since the largest of these earthquakes tend to have strike-slip mechanisms that move the seafloor mostly sideways with little disruption to the ocean above.
The Juan de Fuca Plate meets the North American Plate, however, with a very different sort of plate boundary: a subduction zone. This plate boundary can produce megathrust earthquakes with large vertical motions that cause devastating tsunamis. It has been more than 300 years since the last time the Cascadia Subduction Zone generated such destruction, on January 26, 1700. This subduction zone also created the volcanoes of the High Cascades, stretching from northern California into southern British Columbia.
To put the recent earthquake in context this animation begins 40 years earlier, in 1979. In that time frame 10 earthquake of M6.0 or larger occurred on the Blanco FZ and more than a dozen along the Mendocino FZ, some with M7.0 or larger. The fracture zones off of Vancouver Island have also produced numerous earthquakes larger the M6.0, with one as large at M6.8. The largest earthquake on the Cascadia Subduction Zone in the last 40 years was the M6.8 Nisqually Earthquake in southern Puget Sound on February 28, 2001. The volcanic activity of Mt. St. Helens is also visible in 1980-1982 and 2004-2008. As the area covered by the animation extends over North America, it also includes activity unrelated to Cascadia, such as the October 28, 1983, M6.9 southern Idaho earthquake and numerous small events associated with the Yellowstone Caldera.
Please note that this animation shows every earthquake in the USGS/NEIC catalog for this region. As the animation moves forward in time so too does the science of seismology with the continual addition of newer and better instruments. As the animation approaches the present day these instrument networks are able to detect smaller and smaller earthquakes, creating the illusion of increasing activity. In reality these smaller earthquakes have always been there, but the technology has only recently been able to detect them.

Revelstoke, British Columbia, Canada, in the Canadian Rockies, is located on the Canadian Pacific Railway (CP), where their Shuswap Sub meets their Mountain Sub. The Shuswap Sub runs to the west to Kamloops, BC (towards Vancouver, BC), and the Mountain Sub runs to the east to Field, BC, through Rogers Pass.
The CP traverses the Canadian Rockies over 2 passes. Rogers Pass, which is to the immediate east of Revelstoke, and further east, Kicking Horse Pass, which is to the immediate east of Field. Rogers Pass is at 4,360 feet (1,330 meters), and Kicking Horse Pass is at 5,339 feet (1,627 meters). To the west of Revelstoke is the lower Eagle Pass, at 1,804 feet (550 meters).
Among the freight trains seen here are unit potash, unit grain, and unit coal. Loaded westbounds feature both mid-train and end-of-train DPU’s, and empty eastbounds have fewer engines, both on front and as DPU’s. Many but not all eastbounds will stop to enter the yard, which is located to the east of the museum and cameras. Also seen are manifests, intermodal, and combined intermodal/manifest..
On occasion, the gates will activate, but will soon after deactivate, with no train, which is due to the switcher in the yard proceeding far forward enough to enter the crossing's track circuit.
There are no VIA Rail passenger trains through Revelstoke, however, during part of the year the Rocky Mountaineer can be seen.
There are 2 ATCS layouts, one for each sub, but there is no server coverage. No radio feeds are available.
There’s no schedule for freight trains, but some of our more knowledgeable members will provide real-time information when it’s available. Please refrain from asking.

• Locate the parking space – is the space legal and is it approximately 1 ½ times the size of your car
• Mirror, signal, shoulder check and ensure that it is safe to stop and that there aren't any vehicles tailgating you
• Pull up beside the car (3 feet from the car—in front of the parking space you wish to back into--and stop
• Line up the rear bumpers—you will be able to see the rear corner of the vehicle through your rear right window
• Put the car into reverse so the reverse lights activate telling traffic that you are going to park
• Put on your right signal to communicate to other traffic that you are going to park
• Locate your 45° degree reference point, which should be straight out form the door post—the reference marker can be any fixed object
• Release the brake pedal and back slowly, steering rapidly all the way to the right without any throttle and backing until your are facing your reference point
• At this point the rear bumper of the stationary car should be in line with your steering wheel
• Straighten the wheels and back until the bumper of the parked car is ½ to 1/3 the way down your hood or the front of your car clears the parked car
• Steer rapidly all the way to the left and back until the car is straight in the space
• Stop
Put the transmission in “Drive” or a forward gear and pull forward
• You should be able to see the top of the rear bumper of the car in front of you
• When park your vehicle should be 6-9” inches from the curb
• Secure your vehicle by applying the parking brake and putting the transmission into park (or a forward gear if you’re driving a manual transmission)
When pulling up to parallel park off the other vehicle, take note of how far the other vehicle is from the curb. If the vehicle is far from the curb, you will have to drive farther into the space. If the vehicle is close to the space, you will have to drive less deep into the space. If it is a wide vehicle, that too will dictate that you drive farther into the space.

Politics in the United States have operated under a two-party system for virtually all of the country's history. For elective offices at all levels, state-administered primary elections are held to choose the major party nominees for subsequent general elections. Since the general election of 1856, the two dominant parties have been the Democratic Party, founded in 1824 (though its roots trace back to 1792), and the Republican Party, founded in 1854. Since the Civil War, only one third-party presidential candidate—former president Theodore Roosevelt, running as a Progressive in 1912—has won as much as 20% of the popular vote.
Within American political culture, the Republican Party is considered center-right or conservative and the Democratic Party is considered center-left or liberal. The two ideologies competing within the political mainstream are modern liberalism and modern conservatism. The former is distinguished through its belief in Positive liberty, holding that freedom requires the opportunity to live life as one would choose. Consequently liberalism seeks the universal provision of all three generations of human rights, including for example, freedom of speech, property ownership, education, health care and a clean environment - all of which are seen as prerequisites for liberty and human development.[49][50] Modern conservatism is a hybrid of classical liberalism, which promotes Negative liberty, holding that liberty is nothing more than the absence of direct coercion by other individuals, and social conservatism, which emphasizes hierarchy and authority. It consequently often rejects state efforts to secure second and third generation rights, seeing the state's rightful role almost exclusively limited to securing first generation rights and the social hierarchy necessary for the maintain order.[51][52] While modern liberalism was the dominant ideology on domestic policy throughout the mid 20th century, during a period often dubbed the Keynesian consensus, it has been engaged in a fierce battle with modern conservatism, since the latter's rise in the late 1970s, leading to a sharp resurgence in political polarization.[53][54] The states of the Northeast and West Coast and some of the Great Lakes states, known as blue states in political parlance, are relatively liberal-leaning. The red states of the South and the Rocky Mountains lean conservative.

Artist in Residence Rodrigo Valenzuela | Clark College Vancouver WA
Clark College Artist in Residence discusses his influences, his collaboration with Clark students, and his exhibition Help Wanted.
As the title Help Wanted implies this exhibit is about labor -- the menial work done by migrant workers and the jobs that Clark College students take to support themselves. The gallery itself is divided between videos and photographs by Valenzuela and work (a video, wall murals, and 3-D objects) done in collaboration with Clark College students.
Rodrigo Valenzuela left Chile in 2005 to look for a place where he could grow personally and artistically, initiating his transition from being an emerging award-winning artist and teaching assistant at the University of Chile to being an illegal concrete laborer in Boston which, not surprisingly, changed his art-making process completely.
True Story. I lived three years without documentation in the United States. I searched for work standing on the street and at labor agencies. I hired out as general labor on various construction sites. During this time, I never felt that my job defined me. Not because I thought that I was better than the other workers. Honest hard labor always makes me feel more skillful than editing videos or taking a photo.
Valenzuela chooses the singular figure of the goalkeeper as metaphor for the persisting existence of social stereotypes of migrant workers in America. The idea of the goalkeeper is powerful because there is an opportunity to relate, pass judgment, empathize, or sympathize. The goalkeeper can be seen as an underdog of society; a person, who invisibly takes all the risks, but reaps little to none of the reward when the majority succeeds. (Brian Ohno)
Location and dislocation are central themes for Valenzela's work.
In the series Auriatic Workers, Rodrigo hired day laborers to play soccer in his studio. He took photographs and videos and then rearranged the figures and erased the ball. These altered scenarios have a poetry and pathos that transcends reality, the images and videos exist in a strangely other cinematic zone. The dislocation of the workers is the only truth that remains.
In other works Valenzuela shows the viewer every detail of photographic set or mise-en-scène. He asks you to consider how the arrangement of photographic set or location effects your perception of spatial relationships and alters the mood a photographic studio. His Goalkeeper series captures information that exists both within and outside the pictorial frame.
Valenzuela's work has been shown at: MOCA Miami; National Academy Museum in New York; North Dakota Museum of Art; Henry Art Gallery, Seattle: El Museo Cultural de Santa Fe, NM; COCA, Seattle; Longwood Gallery in the Bronx, NY; and Perspective Gallery in Chicago. He is represented by the Bryan Ohno Gallery in Seattle
