Kathleen Blanco - Newcomb College Institute Leadership Summit Power Lines
Newcomb College Institute Leadership Summit: Power Lines: Women Transform the Grid.
As a long-term public servant in Louisiana, Kathleen Babineaux Blancos political career has been marked by a series of firsts. On January 12, 2004, Blanco became the first woman to serve as governor of Louisiana. She had been in office less than two years when Hurricane Katrina, one of the most devastating hurricanes ever to make landfall in the United States, struck the Louisiana Gulf Coast. In March 2007, she decided not to seek re-election, saying that she would focus her time and energy for the rest of her term on the people's work, not on politics. Before being elected governor, Blanco served two terms as lieutenant governor (1996-2004). In 1984, she became the first women elected to represent Lafayette, La., in the state legislature. Five years later, she was elected to the Public Service Commission, and became the first woman to chair the commission in 1993. A 1964 graduate of the University of Southwestern Louisiana, Blanco started her career as a high school business teacher.

Louisiana Opens Its Newest Hospital - Our Lady of Lourdes Regional Medical Center
Our Lady of Lourdes Regional Medical Center, one of the newest and most advanced medical facilities in Louisiana, opened the doors of its brand new hospital on Ambassador Caffery on June 25th. Patients were transferred to the new hospital by way of ambulance beginning at 6:00 a.m. this Saturday morning.
Part of the Franciscan Missionaries of Our Lady Health System, this Our Lady of Lourdes facility is a newly constructed replacement hospital representing a progressive step for healthcare in the state of Louisiana. Best practices in the medical industry drove the architectural design, resulting in a facility that saves valuable time in trauma cases, offers the highest patient safety standards and touts flexible bed concepts for the most efficient flow of care.
The cornerstone of Lafayette's medical corridor, Our Lady of Lourdes is situated on 45 acres of land off of Ambassador Caffery Parkway connecting to the I-49 highway. The expansive campus opens with a main acute care hospital, a four-story medical office building and neighboring complexes that house over 60 physicians who have located practices in the area since construction began in January 2009.
The new 396,000 square foot hospital will facilitate improvements in nursing including medical equipment that directly integrates with electronic charts in every room, automated alert communication for critical patient levels and management systems for pharmaceuticals and other supplies that streamline care at the bedside.
While total project cost was $211 million, a $28.5 million technology investment equipped the most advanced surgical and procedure suites in Louisiana and in room functionality such as patient education, room service dining and internet connectivity on television screens. The technology purchase also includes additional Information Technology infrastructure to support expanded electronic medical record systems.
Our Lady of Lourdes Regional Medical Center is an acute care facility with over 20 satellite centers and clinics serving as the cornerstone of Lafayette's medical corridor. Grounded in the Roman Catholic faith, this 200-bed facility offers specialized surgical programs and state of the art imaging. The newly constructed, technologically advanced hospital opened June 25th in Lafayette, Louisiana on Ambassador Caffery.
