All England Lawn Tennis and Croquet Club
The All England Lawn Tennis and Croquet Club (AELTC), also known as the All-England Club, based at Church Road, London, England, is a private members' club. It is best known as the venue for the Wimbledon Championships, the only Grand Slam tennis event still held on grass. Initially an amateur event that occupied club members and their friends for a few days each summer, the championships have become far more prominent than the club itself. However, it still operates as a members' tennis club, with many courts in use all year round.
The club has 375 full members, about 100 temporary playing members, and a number of honorary members, including past Wimbledon singles champions and people who have rendered distinguished service to the game. To become a full or temporary member, an applicant must obtain letters of support from four existing full members, two of whom must have known the applicant for at least three years. The name is then added to the Candidates' List. Honorary Members are elected from time to time by the club's Committee. Membership carries with it the right to purchase two tickets for each day of the Wimbledon Championships.

Wimbledon - the world's top tennis tournament is underway - with the Number One men's player Pete Sampras opened the contest - hoping to make it 4 times in a row.
Some fans have queued for days to make sure they were first in line when the All England Club opened its doors.
The lucky ones who got tickets are now enjoying the unique mixture of tennis, tradition, strawberries and unreliable weather.
The normally quiet streets of Wimbledon were buzzing Monday morning as excited tennis fans queued for tickets for start of the tennis world's premier event.
The race for the men's title is the most open for years.
Reigning champion Pete Sampras -- seeking a fourth successive singles title - kicked off proceedings with a victory on centre court Monday afternoon.
Other players took the opportunity to for a bit of last minute practice on the outside courts.
Eighth seed Jim Courier was busy honing his grass-court game - but it didn't do him any good. He lost his opening match against unseeded fellow American Jonathan Stark.
German fan Marco Stein won the unofficial `prize' for being first in queue for public tickets on Monday.
He thought his three-night stay in a car outside the club was a small price to pay.

Over 12-thousand champagne corks are expected to be popped during the championships.
Accompanying them will be two tons of strawberries and 11-thousand pints of cream.
The price of a 10-berry punnet -- one of the event's most reported-on traditions traditional -- was set at one pound 80 pence (2.70 U-S dollars).
The increase means each strawberry will cost 18 pence each (27 cents).
And of course, Wimbledon wouldn't be Wimbledon without the possibility of rain.
If the clouds do hold off during the next two weeks, it will be the third dry championships in four years.
Bookmakers are offering odds of five-to-one against umbrellas being needed during the next fortnight's play.
Security was tight as the first of Wimbledon's wanna-be's arrived.
Gone are the days when outsiders bluffed their way inside armed with nothing more than rackets, shorts and sneakers.
Now all passes are screened by hand-held computers by the ever-vigilant security.
Fred Perry was the last Briton to win the men's title -- bookmakers are giving odds this year of 100-to-one for Greg Rusedski to bring the title home once again.

London 23 - Wimbledon Lawn Tennis Museum
Wimbledon Lawn Tennis Museum is the largest tennis museum in the world. The museum was inaugurated at The Championships centenary event in 1977. On the 12 April 2006, HRH The Duke of Kent declared the brand new Wimbledon Lawn Tennis Museum open to the public inside the grounds of the All England Lawn Tennis Club. This museum has exhibits and artefacts dating back to 1555 as well as touch screen computer consoles for visitors to interact with. Memorabilia from many famous players from Victorian times up to present day are included in several different exhibits, which change seasonally. The Museum also has a viewing platform called CentreCourt360 allowing guests to sample the atmosphere of Centre Court, except for the period around The Championships. Guided tours are also available which take visitors behind the scenes of the All England Lawn Tennis Club and includes admission into the Museum. Audio guides are available in 8 languages: English, French, German, Spanish, Italian, Japanese, Mandarin, Russian, Croatian and Brazilian. WLTM is opened year round to the public except during The Championships week where entry is possible for tournament ticket holders only.

The Championships, Wimbledon, The Wimbledon Championships or simply Wimbledon, is the oldest tennis tournament in the world, and widely considered the most prestigious.[2][3][4][5][6] It has been held at the All England Club in London since 1877. It is one of the four Grand Slam tennis tournaments (Majors), the others being the Australian Open, the French Open (Roland Garros) and the US Open. Since the Australian Open shifted to hard court in 1988, Wimbledon is the only Major still played on grass, the game's original surface, which gave the game its original name of lawn tennis.
The tournament takes place over two weeks in late June and early July, culminating with the Ladies' and Gentlemen's Singles Final, scheduled for the second Saturday and Sunday respectively. Five major, junior, and invitational events are held each year.
The hard court (Plexicushion) Australian Open and clay court French Open precede Wimbledon in the year, and the hard court (DecoTurf) US Open follows. For men, the grass court Queen's Club Championships, in London, England, and the Gerry Weber Open in Halle, Germany, serve as warm-up events; for women, the Aegon Classic in Birmingham and two joint events, the Topshelf Open in 's-Hertogenbosch, Netherlands and the Eastbourne International.
Wimbledon traditions include a strict dress code for competitors, the eating of strawberries and cream by the spectators, and Royal patronage. The tournament is also notable for the absence of sponsor advertising around the courts. In 2009, Wimbledon's Centre Court was fitted with a retractable roof to lessen the loss of playing time due to rain.
The Club was founded on 23 July 1868 at the height of a croquet craze[4] as the All England Croquet Club, and held its first croquet competition in 1870. Its original ground was situated off Worple Road, Wimbledon. Croquet was very popular there until the then-infant sport of lawn tennis (a game introduced by Major Walter Clopton Wingfield a year or so prior, and originally called Sphairistike) was introduced in 1875,[5] when one lawn was set aside for this purpose.[6] The first tennis Gentlemen's Championship in Singles was held in 1877,when the Club changed its name to The All England Croquet and Lawn Tennis Club. That year at Wimbledon service was underarm. The champion, Spencer Gore, opined that Lawn tennis will never rank among our great games.[7] In 1878 the height of the net was altered to 4 feet 9 inches (1.45 m) at the posts and 3 feet (0.91 m) at the centre.[8] In 1882, croquet was dropped from the name, as tennis had become the main activity of the Club. But in 1899 it was restored to the Club's name for sentimental reasons, and the Club's name became The All England Lawn Tennis and Croquet Club.
In 1884, the Club added Ladies' Singles and Gentlemen's Doubles, and then in 1913 Ladies' Doubles and Mixed Doubles.[9] For the 1908 Summer Olympics, the venue hosted the Grass Courts tennis events.[10] The early Club colours were found to be almost identical to those of the Royal Marines, so they were changed in 1909 to the present Club colours of dark green and purple.[11] The popularity of Frenchwoman Suzanne Lenglen was largely responsible for forcing the Club to move to larger grounds at its present site in Church Road, Wimbledon, in 1922,[12] where its first Championship was plagued by rain each day.[13] The current Centre Court dates from that year. It has been improved and extended on several occasions. Most recently a sliding roof was added in time for the 2009 Championships. In 1924 the old No. 1 Court opened on the west side of Centre Court. During World War II The Championships were suspended but the Club remained open with a much smaller staff, and was used for fire and ambulance services, British Home Guard, and a decontamination unit, and troops stationed nearby drilled on the main concourse. At 5:20 p.m. on October 11, 1940, five 500 pound German bombs struck the grounds, demolishing 1,200 seats in Centre Court.[14] The old No. 1 Court was replaced with the current No. 1 Court in 1997, and the Broadcast Centre was built at the same time. Shortly afterwards, the Millennium Building, which houses facilities for players, press, officials and members, was built on the site of the old No. 1 Court.

Two weeks of tennis mania began today (Monday) - after last minute preparations that ranged from checking the court surface to choosing the best quality strawberries.
Favoured to win this year are Pete Sampras and Steffi Graf.

For many people Wimbledon is THE tennis tournament of the year.
A fortnight in the middle of the English summer where the top players from around the world gather in London's south-west to play on the grass courts of this most famous tennis club.
Traditional greetings are offered by the local town crier to the thousands of people who queue for tickets at the gates.
This woman queued for two days, but said it's all part of the high point of her tennis year.

With seating for 27,000 people around 18 courts, Wimbledon is not only a tennis spectacular but a catering extravaganza as well.
Hospitality tents are as important a part of Wimbledon's atmosphere as the champagne that flows freely in them.
But it's strawberries that are the tournament's real trademark.
Up to 24 tons of strawberries are likely to be served over the two week period.
But once thirsts have been quenched and strawberries consumed - all eyes turn to the courts.
For fans without tickets to center court, they can often catch glimpses of their favorite players on the practice courts.
Big names like France's Henri Lecomte are treated like Hollywood movie stars.
Peter Sampras, the Wimbledon singles men's champion for the past two years, was overwhelmed by the autograph-seeking mob. If he wins again this year, he'll become the first American to win the championship three times in a row. The last man to do so was Bjorn Borg.
Jana Novotna made it to the finals here two years ago. She is remembered for her tearful breakdown after she lost to Steffi Graf.
Former Wimbledon winner Stan Smith says he doesn't expect any major surprises this year.

Well, I think I'd have to go with Pete in the men's and Steffi in the women's. I mean they're obviously the top seeds but Pete has really gone through a tough time and after Queens he's playing well. American sixth seed Michael Chang is a superstar in Asia, and could do well this year. Last year he made it to the quarter finals.
