This is the first of 5 videos of the Heritage Center and the Interpretive Trail.
Well worth the drive to get there. The history and artifacts are incredible. We have 5 short video’s here taking you through the Center and the interpretive trail. We will also be following up with video’s of the Canyons of the Ancients and 6 different ruins.
On June 9, 2000, a presidential proclamation set aside 164,000 acres of rugged desert canyons and high mesas for preservation as Canyons of the Ancients National Monument. The Anasazi Heritage Center is the gateway to this significant archaeological landscape, and was completed in 1984 as part of the Dolores Archaeological Program. Nearly 1,600 archaeological sites—hunting camps, granaries, households, villages, etc.—have yielded artifacts, some of which are on display at the museum today. Owned and operated by the Bureau of Land Management, the Anasazi Heritage Center also provides information on a number of sites that have benefited from SHF grants. Nearly $1.5 million dollars has been awarded for approximately 24 projects to various non-profit organizations to conduct research, stabilization, and interpretation involving archaeological resources in the Canyon of the Ancients. The goal of the Heritage Center is to increase awareness of archaeology and cultural resources, as well as the Ancestral Puebloan (Anasazi) and other peoples of the Four Corners region.

Canyons of the Ancients National Monument Colorado - Goosenecks State Park Utah
After one and a half months of vanlife around Colorado we made our way towards Utah via Cortez, located on the Southwest corner of Colorado. We planned to explore the stunning Canyons of the Ancients National Monument but due to several days of pouring rain we chose to instead visit the Anasazi Heritage Center, located in Dolores, Colorado. The museum offers a beautiful exhibit with artifacts and tools from the ancient people with education on the Anasazi culture and film documentaries and photo exhibits:
We stayed a couple of days in Cortez to get some work done at the Spruce Tree Espresso House, a cafe with delicious coffee and tea, smoothies and vegetarian and vegan food options as well as free wifi and lots of seating which is a welcoming way to get some work done as a digital nomad.
The small town has a couple of different restaurants and we especially loved the farm to table food at the Farm Bistro:
We were delighted to find a great yoga studio called Heart and Core Yoga Studio where we enjoyed a great vinyasa flow class. After speaking to the teacher who is also a homesteader we met the next day for an interview on sustainable living, check out the interview here:
After a few days in Cortez, we made our way into the State of Utah and visited the incredible Goosenecks State Park, a state park with picnic area and campsites located in Balding UT where we took a hike along the canyon and enjoyed the gorgeous views:

Hanging Flume - Dolores Canyon, Western Slope, Colorado
It's probably not too clear but the hanging flume in this video is the dark horizontal band on the rock face about two thirds up from the river. A roadside information sign describes the flume like this;
In need of water to work its Dolores Canyon gold claims, the Montrose Placer Mining Company built a thirteen -mile [21 kilometre] canal and flume to deliver water from the San Miguel River. The last five miles [8 kilometres] of the flume clung to the wall of the canyon itself, running along the cliff face [in this video].
Constructed between 1888 and 1891, the four-foot-deep [1.2 metre], five-foot-four-inch-wide [1.6 metre] 'hanging flume' carried 23,640,000 gallons [89,487,134 litres] in a twenty-four hour period. Its construction dazzled mining pros with its sheer ingenuity.
The placer claim, unfortunately, dazzled no one; after three years of indifferent yields the company folded, abandoning the flume to the ravages of weather and time. Now listed in the National Register of Historic Places, this engineering marvel symbolizes the twists of fate so often encountered in the pursuit of Rocky Mountain gold.

The County Seat - Protecting Utah's Archaeological Sites
“Life can only be understood backwards, but it must be lived forwards” Those words by renowned existentialist philosopher Soren Kierkegaard (Kier-ka-gaerd) frame our County Seat Episode today as we talk about the value of artifacts in the context of the
field where they are found, not the museum or gallery where they end up.

Mesa Verde Area Attractions
In the mood for adventure? Southwest Colorado offers some of the best. No trip to Cortez, Colorado or Montezuma County would be complete without a visit to Mesa Verde National Park. Mesa Verde (Spanish for Green Table) is nestled in the mountains of Southwest Colorado. Established June 29, 1906 by President Theodore Roosevelt, Mesa Verde National Park was the first park of its kind.
Today this national park protects over 4,000 known archeological sites. This includes 600 Anasazi Cliff Dwellings. These Anasazi dwellings are some of the best preserved in the United States. While visiting the park make it a point to visit Cliff Palace, Long House and Spruce Tree House. The tours are ranger-guided and give you the opportunity to experience these Ancestral Puebloan sites first hand.
There are also many hiking trails in Mesa Verde National Park, however you are asked to stay on the designated trails to preserve the natural surroundings. The park truly has something for everyone and is open year round. Cortez, Mancos and Dolores, Colorado are all just minutes away from Mesa Verde offering many hotels, restaurants and vacation rentals.
For more information, please visit
The Cortez area is a center for archeology lovers. In addition to Mesa Verde National Park there are many other archeological attractions just a few miles away. These include: Hovenweep National Monument, Crow Canyon Archeological Center, Anasazi Heritage Center and Canyon of the Ancients National Monument. If you are looking for stone architecture, Arches National Park or Natural Bridges National Monument are just a few hours away.
The San Juan Skyway Scenic Byway takes you through the beautiful San Juan Mountains as you look out at the 14,000 ft. mountains around you. This tour is breathtaking during the changing colors of the fall season.
