Impromptu musicians on a Tuesday night
The Barber Shop
In my travels through Dripping Springs, Tx.in the Hill Country.
I stopped by this late night barber shop. Why was a barber shop open so late and with so many customers? I guess it used to be a barber shop but too many folks wanted a place to hang out and be entertained. I couldn't pass up sharing some of this experience with y'all.
Bill Garza was playing some traditional country music. Enjoy!

Hattie Cleo Jordan Irving
On February 28, 1929, in Okmulgee County, Oklahoma, God in His infinite wisdom blessed Hillary and Hattie (Hutchinson) Jordan with a beautiful baby girl. This precious gift from God was the eleventh of thirteen children born into the family and was given the name Hattie Cleo Jordan.
Hattie was raised in a Christian home and was always nurtured in the admonition of the Lord. She accepted Christ as a young girl and was baptized in the family church of Dripping Springs Baptist Church. Beginning in the early 1960s, Hattie C. Irving spent the remaining years of her life as a Catholic in worship at the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception where she dedicated over fifty years faithfully serving the Lord.
Hattie Cleo Jordan attended public school in Okmulgee County, Oklahoma where she completed her high school education at Rosenwald High School. Her college years were spent at Wiley College in Marshall, Texas and Oklahoma University in Norman, Oklahoma. She received a business degree upon graduation and completed her graduate work. She received her master’s degree from Memphis State University, now known as the University of Memphis.
Hattie’s first teaching assignment was in Texarkana, Arkansas. There she met her lifelong partner in marriage, a pharmacist, George W. Irving, Jr. The couple was united in holy matrimony on February 2, 1952. To this union, three children were born: a son, George W. Irving, III and two daughters, Rhonda C. Irving and Angela M. Irving. Hattie and George relocated to Memphis, Tennessee in 1959 and shared 62 years of marriage.
Hattie exhibited her loving and giving spirit in helping others by volunteering and dedicating her adult life to teaching and educating. She concluded her teaching career at Carver High School in June, 1989 with thirty years of service for Memphis City Schools.
Hattie’s commitment to service did not end with her retirement. She was actively involved as a “Golden” member of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. for over 50 years and served as Beta Epsilon Omega’s nineteenth chapter Basileus in Memphis, TN. As a dedicated member of the Immaculate Conception parish for over 50 years, Hattie was selected to serve on the Diocesan Council of Catholic Women and Church Women United for Memphis and Shelby County. She was an active participant in the Glenview-Edgewood Manor Area Association which obtained classification as a historical area for her community. Her work extended beyond the local level to her participation as a lifetime member of the NAACP and providing financial support for the National Civil Rights Museum and the Museum of African American History. Lifelong service as a volunteer and efforts to create a nurturing environment for raising a family are her contributions and legacy.
In God’s appointed time, Hattie’s husband, George, father, Hillary, mother, Hattie, and siblings Frank, Herbert, Myrtle, Annie, Ruth, Willa, Oliver, Peter, Edna, Daniel, Cornelius and Helen have all preceded her in death.
Left to cherish her memory are her three children, George W. Irving, III (Vicki) of National Harbor, MD, Rhonda I. Dykes (Roland) of Newport, TN and Angela I. Hawkins (Raybon) of Memphis, TN; six grandchildren, Roland A. Dykes, IV (Knoxville, TN), George W. Irving, IV (Cincinnati, OH), Ross M. Hawkins, Amber M. Hawkins, Joshua A. Hawkins and Rebekah H. Hawkins (all of Memphis, TN); two great-grandchildren, Jaydon and Jayce Hawkins as well as a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and other relatives and friends.
