Advanced Smoke Group Blackwall Tunnel Project: Largest AOV in Britain
A look at how the Advanced Smoke Group installed the Britain's largest Automatic Opening Ventilation in Blackwall Tunnel.
The Blackwall Tunnel project lasted approx 18 months and required AOV's to be built into the existing ventilation shaft structures.
Through ingenuity and innovation the team were able to design and install the AOV, weighing 8.2 tonnes and 8.5 metres in diameter yet still capable of opening within 60 seconds in the event of a fire to allow for the safe extraction of smoke and other harmful gases.

STORYLINE:
A fire in east London sent a towering column of black smoke over the British capital on Monday.
The blaze broke out shortly after noon (1206GMT) at a disused warehouse in Stratford within the construction site for the 2012 Summer Olympics, the British Broadcasting Corp. reported.
Fire crews were at the scene of the blaze in the industrial area, the London Fire Brigade said.
Extensive redevelopment is taking place in the area, about 9 kilometres (5.5 miles) east of central London, for the 2012 Olympics.
Police said there was nothing to suggest a suspicious cause.
There were no reports of injuries. One railway line was closed because of smoke, Network Rail said.

The fire at Cottons Wharf on Tooley Street, on 22 June 1861, was seen as the worst since The Great Fire of London. Engines arrived from all over the country to help the LFEE, but it still took two weeks to put the fire out.
The fire led to a big social change. Its huge cost forced insurance companies to tell the Home Secretary that they could no longer be responsible for the fire safety of London. This led to the creation of the Metropolitan Fire Brigade in 1865, of which The Fire Station in Tooley Street would be a part.

At least 30 injured after huge fire engulfs 24-storey London tower block
Fire engulfed a 24-storey block of flats in central London on Wednesday, killing some people, injuring at least 50 more and trapping some residents asleep inside the towering inferno.
Flames licked up the sides of the block in the north Kensington area as 200 firefighters, backed up by 40 fire engines, fought the blaze for hours.
Plumes of black and grey smoke billowed high into the air over the British capital hours after the blaze broke out at the Grenfell Tower where several hundred people live.
