Vancouver is For the Birds
If you've ever visited Vancouver or anywhere else in British Columbia, you'll know what a great destination it is for watching birds and other wildlife. But sometimes you may not have enough time to travel outside of Vancouver to go bird-watching on an extended tour. However, there are some incredible opportunities for birders right in and around Vancouver, no more than an hour's drive in any direction from the main downtown core. This video may inspire you to check out some of the cool bird sites in the B.C. Lower Mainland.
Vancouver PUBLIC ART: THE BIRDS BY MYFANWY MACLEOD at Olympic Village, False Creek
A late afternoon visit to Olympic Village to see the gigantic The Birds sculptures by Myfanwy Macleod located on the Olympic Plaza at False Creek.
From Wikipedia: The Birds comprises a pair of outdoor sculptures depicting house sparrows by Myfanwy MacLeod, installed after the 2010 Winter Olympics in Southeast False Creek Olympic Plaza, which served as the site of the 2010 Olympic Village in Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada. The work depicts one male and one female house sparrow, each approximately five metres tall, and was the first piece approved by the city's Olympic and Paralympic Public Art Program. It was inspired by Alfred Hitchcock's 1963 film of the same name, sustainability, the site's history as a shipyard, and immigration.
As you can see in the video, these birds have become very popular especially with children who love to climb all over them. Unfortunately, because of this, the sculptures have sustained damage so they will be removed later this fall for some badly needed repairs and strengthening, and will be replaced within 10 months. The city wants to ensure they are in place well before birders and bird scientists come to town for the 27th International Ornithological Congress in August of 2018. When the two birds are repaired and improved, they will each have a much harder and more durable aluminum shell. The colour of the female will change slightly from browny-grey to a more yellowy-grey as intended in the original design. Otherwise, the two birds will appear the same as when they were first installed.
“People, especially kids, love to climb on stuff,” MacLeod said. “You can’t stop people from being people. So you need to figure out how to make your work survive the realities of that.”

City Bird Watching, Bird Calls From a Pole, Vancouver BC, Canada
Unintended bird watching in the city happened to me in Vancouver BC, Canada while walking down a street lined with blossoming cherry trees. I heard bird calls very close to me which turned out to be coming from a bird sitting just above a pole.
This is my very first bird watching video and although the bird without a zoom can't be seen very clearly, the bird song it produces is very beautiful and makes watching the video very worthwhile at least for bird watchers, bird lovers and those curious about bird sounds.
Enjoy.
