Black Hills Wild Horse Sanctuary - Wild mustangs foals
The Black Hills Wild Horse Sanctuary is one of America's greatest private wilderness areas, founded in 1988 by Dayton O. Hyde. Is possible to see hundreds of wild mustangs and their foals roaming free across wind swept prairies.
A Mustang is a free-roaming feral horse of the North American west that first descended from horses brought to the Americas by the Spanish. Mustangs are often referred to as wild horses, but the more correct term is feral horses. In 1971, the United States Congress recognized Mustangs as living symbols of the historic and pioneer spirit of the West, which continue to contribute to the diversity of life forms within the Nation and enrich the lives of the American people.

C&F Worldwide: Susan Watt - President, Black Hills WIld Horse Sanctuary
C&F's Jason Carter sat down with Susan Ward, Persident and Program Director of the Black Hills Wild Horse Sanctuary to discuss the past, present, and future of the sanctuary. Hundreds of both wild and rescued horses call the 12,00 acre property home. Many rescues come from pens awaiting slaughter, a common occurance in the few states where wild American mustangs still roam.
Please watch and share this video, and be sure to visit the sanctuary's website at wildmustangs.com. If you are able, all doantions to the sanctuary are GREATLY appreciated and 100% tax deductible!!!

BLACK HILLS CONVOY - ARDMORE & HOT SPRINGS, SD
The Black Hills MVPA Convoy (day 3) passed through the old ghost town of Ardmore on its way north from Fort Robinson, Nebraska on the old Fort Sidney to Deadwood wagon road. The almost dead town was once the home of Texas Jack, a notorious horse thief, who later took to the stage and worked for Buffalo Bill who convinced Jack to enter the 1,000 mile Chadron, NE to Chicago horse race. I believe this is the basis to the film HIDALGO. As we continued north toward Hot Springs we passed the Wild Horse Sanctuary which where some of HIDALGO's scenes were filmed. We plan to stop here on the next Black Hills Convoy in June of 2016.
Proceeding north we crossed the Cheyenne River and entered the Black Hills stopping briefly at Cascade Falls for a picnic lunch. Next stop was at the Hot Springs' Information Center (their old train station) where the convoy split as some were anxious to get to the evening's destination, Blue Bell Lodge in Custer State Park. The more adventurous did a walk-about town and then drove up to the top of Battle Mountain, named for the Cheyenne vs. Sioux Indian skirmish there that took place in 1869. Battle Mountain is a SD conservation area with a great off-road jeep trail. This area can be accessed by taking Thompson Road east (near the Dew Drop Inn). In 2016 we plan for an evening sunset off-road drive to the top after dinner and a pre-breakfast longer incursion the following morning. Hot Springs will be our first stop after leaving Fort Rob in 2016 staying at the Historic Log Cabin Motel which is where we stayed on the convoy's return leg. Everyone liked their stay at this old 1929 road stop. The motel features views of the landmark old soldier's home (VA) and the Black Hills Natl. Cemetery from the patio.
The music is GHOST RIDERS IN THE SKY from (with permission) 'Live at the Circle B' DVD as sung by Stan Jones.
If you have been following the convoy you might ask, Why am I not seeing lots of vehicles? The convoy was kept small on purpose. The most we had, I think, was 13 including the two chase vehicles. As I was the lead vehicle and had no cameraman my video did not capture a lot of the convoy's vehicles which were all behind me. Whenever we stopped I was more concerned with taking photos of the places we toured rather than the vehicles as I already have photo albums full of old army wheels. Next time the convoy will be open to 30 vehicles + 6 chase vehicles. Registration will begin at the Louisville MVPA Convention in June of 2014.

National Day of the Horse
In 2004, Congress recognized the first official National Day of the Horse. The text of the resolution states:
Encouraging citizens to be mindful of the contribution of horses to the economy, history, and character of the United States and expressing the sense of Congress that a National Day of the Horse should be established.
Whereas the horse is a living link to the history of the United States;
Whereas, without horses, the economy, history, and character of the United States would be profoundly different;
Whereas horses continue to permeate the society of the United States, as witnessed on movie screens, on open land, and in our own backyards;
Whereas horses are a vital part of the collective experience of the United States and deserve protection and compassion;
Whereas, because of increasing pressure from modern society, wild and domestic horses rely on humans for adequate food, water, and shelter; and
Whereas the Congressional Horse Caucus estimates that the horse industry contributes well over $100,000,000,000 each year to the economy of the United States: Now, therefore, be it Resolved by the House of Representatives (the Senate concurring), That Congress--
(1) encourages all citizens to be mindful of the contribution of horses to the economy, history, and character of the United States;
(2) expresses its sense that a National Day of the Horse should be established in recognition of the importance of horses to the Nation's security, economy, recreation, and heritage; and
(3) urges the President to issue a proclamation calling on the people of the United States and interested organizations to observe National Day of the Horse with appropriate programs and activities.
On the anniversary of the first official National Day of the Horse, horse enthusiasts are encouraged to celebrate the horse's contribution to the United States.

WE ARE THE LAND, Uranium Mining in the Black Hills
WE ARE THE LAND, Uranium Mining in the Black Hills
A new documentary film from Christopher Crosby
Produced by PK Productions LLC and the Institute of Range and American Mustang.
ABOUT WE ARE THE LAND -
Governments and the uranium industry say the mining and milling of uranium provides high-paying and much-needed jobs in some of the most remote areas of the country, with manageable environmental risks. But it's an industry that has long attracted its share of controversy.
This is a major concern for the Black Hills Wild Horse Sanctuary in western South Dakota, and other residents including environmental and conservation groups. The Sierra Club of South Dakota warns that water pollution will be a major concern if the mining company Powertech is given a permit to mine for uranium. The Sierra Club's Black Hills Group, says there's a high likelihood that aquifers will become polluted if an injection-well recovery system is used to mine the ore.
Powertech Inc USA has submitted its uranium mining application to the Nuclear Regulatory Commission and it can be viewed at the NRC website. The NRC has announced a time period for interested individuals to voice their concerns regarding the uranium mine's impacts to the environment. This proposed uranium mine will be the first time folks can be heard under the new GEIS.
It's going to be my last great battle, but I'm going to win this one. says Hyde.
