Seeing Orangutans in Bukit Lawang (for free) No guide ????????
This is a guide on how to travel Bukit Lawang. Some will not agree with my methods. I don't mind paying but the local government and guides have set a non negotiable price which is way to high. around 50usd for a one day trek. Don't go without a guide unless you are confident and can navigate easily and study the area.

Bukit Lawang, Sumatra - A hidden village of friendly people and beautiful nature
Bukit Lawang is a small tourist village on the bank of Bahorok River in North Sumatra province of Indonesia. Situated approximately 86 km northwest of the city of Medan, Bukit Lawang is known for the largest animal sanctuary of Sumatran orangutan (around 5,000 orangutans occupying the area) and also the main access point to the Gunung Leuser National Park from the east side.
The Bukit Lawang rehabilitation centre for orangutans was founded in 1973. Its main purpose was to preserve the decreasing number of orangutan population due to hunting, trading and deforestation. The centre closed in 2002 as the place was getting too touristy and unsuitable for animal rehabilitation.
A flash flood hit Bukit Lawang on 2 November 2003.The disaster destroyed the local tourist resorts and had a devastating impact to the local tourism industry in the area. Around 400 houses, 3 mosques, 8 bridges, 280 kiosks and food stalls, 35 hotels and guest houses were destroyed by the flood; 239 people including 5 tourists were killed, and around 1,400 locals lost their homes.Local authorities and an environmental NGO attributed it to illegal logging. Thanks to several international cooperation agencies, the site was rebuilt and re-opened again in July 2004.

Orangutans and Sumatra Jungle Trekking in Bukit Lawang, Indonesia
INDONESIA: Orangutan Gunung Leuser, Bukit Lawang, Sumatra (HD-video).mp4
With a guide we walked into the jungle of Gunung Leuser national park (near Bukit Lawang, Sumatra) and of course we did like to encounter orangutans.
We were lucky, we saw a mother with her child. Though they were in the wild now, they were not yet afraid of humans and accepted fruit.
During our walk we saw some Thomas Leaf monkeys too.
As more tourists come for a walk, they often meet humans and we could come very close to them.

The film is based in Bukit Lawang, where devastating floods caused over 239 deaths in 2003. The flooding was attributed to illegal logging in the surrounding Gunung Leuser National Park. Since the floods, this village community has been involved in voluntary forest governance enforcement schemes in an attempt to curb illegal logging in the National Park. The community has also started to recognise the important role of ecotourism in the preservation of their surrounding forests. See more on The films were made by Handcrafted Films and Gekko Studios.

Tube Rafting in Bukit Lawang - Sumatra
In the rainforests of Sumatra are many opportunities to enjoy a taste of river rafting. One of them is tube rafting or tubing in the village of Bukit Lawang, which is divided by Bohorok River. It runs straight through the village and is part of what makes the place so special. The Bohorok river is a popular venue for tubing. Tubing is floating down the river in an inflated truck inner tube. You can hire tubes at many points along the river in the village for the day, walk up stream, and then float down the river.
Rafting traditional ‘jungle style’ on large tubes tied together by expert guides is fun and amazing adrenaline experience. Tubes are attached together to form a kind of canoe and our guide Nurdin as ‘captain’ makes as reach the village safely.

Massive Orangutan in Bukit Lawang
This video highlights the best bits from our 2 day trek through the thick Sumatran jungle in Indonesia to see the amazing Orangutans.
We started our trek in a place called Bukit Lawang, which is located right next to the jungle. We stayed there the night and met our guides who helped us prepare for the trek.
Bukit Lawang is a magical place. The people, food and general atmosphere there is something to be experienced for yourself. During my 3 month trip through South East Asia, this place and seeing the Orangutans was definitely one of the highlights of my trip.
Many thanks to everyone who made this trip so amazing.
