The British Cemetery in Funchal
presents: The British Cemetery in Funchal
The British Cemetery dates its origin from 1770. Prior to this date, Madeiran Law dictated that the mortal remains of those deceased who were not Roman Catholic by faith were to be buried at sea.
However, from 1772 onward, British interests in Madeira secured a burial ground in the outskirts of Funchal. This cemetery remains today, although the boundaries have been slightly move and added to.
Over two hundred years, some note-worthy people, of various nationalities, have been buried here.
Our video provides directions to walk to the cemetery from the centre of Funchal. We then have footage of the surrounds, reflecting the tranquillity and beauty of the grounds.

Hey Ghouls and Boos!
Another day, another cemetery.
And this one, I must say, didn't knew it even existed. How crazy is that? It is so well hidden...
Once more, this visit was organized by my city, as part of its cultural programme.
I hope you like it.

Haunted Madeira : Funchal Cemetery
A site survey of the haunted cemetery. Submitted by Jukka Sandberg of Finland, during Paranormal Investigations upon the island. Funchal cemetery is situated upon the island of Madeira, and has a reputation for being haunted. It is the largest municipal cemetery in Madeira, though there are other necropoli.
Madeira was first settled by Portuguese settlers between 1420 - 1425 AD. Though it appears on maps since at least 1339 and was visited by Vikings between 900 - 1030 AD. Its location however was known to the scholars of the ancient world.
Funchal cemetery today is a well maintained necropolis with some very interesting gravestones and monuments. It is known locally to be haunted, as Paranormal Investigators who live there will tell you. It has not been possible to identify any individual Ghost by name.

Strange Funnelled Saga Pearl 11 Belfast Sept '16
I had dropped down to see the MS Amadea sitting in Thompson dock. Just about to head for home I looked across towards Pollock dock and noticed the very distinctive funnel of another cruise ship sitting over in Pollock dock. This boat had not appeared on the Belfast Cruise ship Schedule so I was surprised to see her in. At that time I didn't even know her name. Pollock dock is a wee bit more tricky for me to get to but it proved well worth the effort today. The place was buzzing with activity.
Saga Pearl 11
This ship has had some name changes along the way. The cruise ship Saga Pearl II (formerly Astoria and Quest for Adventure) has been operating for more than 28 years, making cruises worldwide. The vessel has a near (but bigger) sister-ship also named Astor. Both ships were operated by Transocean Tours. In August 2009, Saga Cruises made a successful bid for the ship at auction. The ship was renamed Saga Pearl II and embarked on her first cruise in March 2010. She was renamed as Quest for Adventure in May 2012, and then back to Saga Pearl II in November 2013.

Grave of Charles I of Austria, Monte, Madeira
Grave of Charles I of Austria in the Church of our llady of the Mountain in Monte, Madeira. Wiki says
Exile in Madeira and death
After the second failed attempt at restoration in Hungary, Charles and pregnant Zita were briefly quarantined at Tihany Abbey. On 1 November 1921 they were taken to the Hungarian Danube harbor city of Baja, made to board the British monitor HMS Glowworm, and were removed to the Black Sea where they were transferred to the light cruiser HMS Cardiff. They arrived in their final exile, the Portuguese island of Madeira, on 19 November 1921. Determined to prevent a third restoration attempt, the Council of Allied Powers had agreed on Madeira because it was isolated in the Atlantic and easily guarded.
Originally the couple and their children (who joined them only on 2 February 1922) lived at Funchal at the Villa Vittoria, next to Reid's Hotel, and later moved to Quinta do Monte. Compared to the imperial glory in Vienna and even at Eckartsau, conditions there were certainly impoverished.
Charles would not leave Madeira again. On 9 March 1922 he caught a cold walking into town and developed bronchitis, which subsequently progressed to severe pneumonia. Having suffered two heart attacks, he died of respiratory failure on 1 April in the presence of his wife (who was pregnant with their eighth child) and 9-year-old former Crown Prince Otto, retaining consciousness almost to the last moment. His remains except for his heart are still kept on the island, in the Church of Our Lady of Monte, in spite of several attempts to move them to the Habsburg Crypt in Vienna.

Cristo Rei By Drone | Madeira | Portugal | DJI Mavic 2 Pro | 23.05.2019.
The Christ the King statue (Portuguese: Cristo Rei) also known as the Sacred Heart statue, is an Art Deco statue of Jesus Christ in Garajau, Madeira.
It is here that non catholic Christians were thrown from the cliffs as only Catholics were allowed to be buried on the island until 1770 when the British Cemetery of Funchal was established for non catholic Christians. The Jewish Cemetery of Funchal was established in 1851. The statue was built in remembrance of the function of the area's history.
The statue was built in 1927 and consecrated on October 30, 1927. Financed by the local lawyer Aires de Ornelas and his wife, created by French artists Georges Serraz and Pierre Charles Lenoir. The statue was completed 4 years before Christ the Redeemer statue in Brazil.

I noticed these war graves while up in Ballywillan Old Churchyard that looks down over Portrush. Almost every graveyard here has war graves. So many died. So many tears.
