Ghost Train Haunted Britain - BBC '40 Minutes' Documentary, Spooky Journey Around the UK 1989
You can actually hear everyone now!!!
Wonderfully shot around the UK in 1989 and shown on BBC2 as part of their long running & respected '40 Minutes' series. My favourite section is the grand old man with the dragon motif in his ceiling, the music & story are very touching, it's often brought a tear to my eye - Here is the exact piece as used in the film youtube.com/watch?v=R42bD2X6n34&index=7&list=FLq4ErovReR2KZfenO8p36Pw
Most believable story is the man talking about his aunts who were sisters. Watch out for the hilarious little boy talking about his sister, cute doesn't cover it; as to the story of his grandma, I'm not sure about this one, the daughter could have over heard what her grandma was wearing, and the rest is her imagination. I'm not mad about the last part at the airfield, but overall this is an entertaining & well made programme, in vintage BBC style.
New recording over S-VHS & separate audio cables to a top of the line S-VHS VCR. I've removed some of the hiss, but not too much, the picture is also upsampled then upscaled to 720p. It will never have perfect audio as unfortunately I recorded it in LP (long play), which reduces sound quality. This is the best I can do at home, so hope you enjoy this better version.
Enjoy!
Rationing In Britain
COI 155
An American commentator looks at the effects of rationing on the people of England in 1944.
The film presents a 'typical' family of 4 (housewife, engine-driver husband, factory-working daughter, schoolboy son) to illustrate the basic rationing system, the workings of 'point' systems and other restrictions, and the difficulties the average family faced when eating 'on the ration'.

405 Line Dynatron TV Working
Nigel Hunt looks at a vintage Dynatron 405 Line TV from 1959.
This set (which contains an Echo chassis) was purchased by the Hunt family in 1959. It was first used in Burnley, Lancs, using Holme Moss for BBC (Ch2) & Winter Hill for ITV (Granada weekdays & ABC TV at weekends) (Ch9). At this distance from the transmitters an outdoor aerial was required. In 1962 the family moved to Bury, Lancs. The same transmitters were used, but as they were now closer, a loft aerial was adequate.
From Bury it was possible to get a weak (sound only) signal from Emley Moor (Ch10 - Granada Yorkshire region) and, if conditions were good, it would pick up (sound only) from Sutton Coldfield (Ch8 - ATV).
In the late 60s the Holme Moss signal, though still covering the whole North of England, now carried the BBC Regional Programmes for Yorkshire, so new tuning coils were fitted for BBC from Winter Hill (Ch12) which carried the Lancashire service.
In the early seventies a 625 line B/W set became the main method of viewing for the family followed in 1973 by a colour set. The Dynatron still saw occasional use however when there was a programme clash.
Over the years there have been many memories. Nigel can remember some of the first ever editions of Blue Peter with Christopher Trace in 1959 - blurred Eurovision pictures from the Rome Olympics in 1960 - The Kennedy Assassination in November '63, followed the next day by the first ever episode of Dr Who - Winston Churchill’s Funeral in 1965 - Our World (the first round the world satellite programme) in 1967 - The first Moon Landings in 1969 - and much else besides.
After 405 line shutdown in 1985 the set fell into disuse. Several options for its future were considered. One was to rip out the innards & convert the set into a cocktail cabinet. Another idea was to replace the innards with a modern colour chassis, thus becoming a colour set in a nice cabinet. Neither fate was to befall it, more a matter of inertia than a particular desire to preserve it at the time.
It was only in the late 90s that Nigel heard of the wireless museum and the existence of the old 625 to 405 standards converter from Crystal Palace. The set was brought to London, tested & found to be working, albeit a little wobbly. Terry Martini kindly did much restoration, replacing worn out components (mostly capacitors) which had decayed, either through age or lack of use.
The set is now in full working order, and resides at the Vintage Wireless Museum in South London.
After looking at this and a few other vintage TVs, we take a brief look at a waveform scope followed by a quick view of some of the many old radios on display. Finally a picture of the late Gerald Wells who created the museum.
Orkney Islands Wireless Museum and Classic car show Kirkwall
While on a round Great Britain Cruise in Sept 2012 on Thomson's Spirit I stumbled across this little gem of a wireless museum in Kirkwall on the Orkney Isles. I only had a very short time to grab these snaps and there is so much more to look at I hope I can get back someday. If you are on the Island I am sure that enthusiasts of old radios will enjoy this as much as I did. After a lifetime in the radio and TV business from the 1960 this exhibition brought back fond memories and even the smell of gently toasting mains droppers and thermal valves took me back 50 years. As an added bonus :- there was also a classic car event going on close by so just had enough time to grab a few snaps before rushing back to the ship as the pulled the gang plank up! Enjoy!

There are more surviving violins and cello's by Stradivari than there are pre-war televisions
Michael Bennett-Levy set out to collect the earliest surviving television technology in the world, and explore the battle for its control that was fought between Britain, Germany and America in the 1920’s and 30’s.
Using historic artefacts and rarely seen archive the film charts John Logie Baird from his seminal breakthroughs in 1925 and 1926, to his struggles with the BBC's Lord Reith and the Radio Corporation of America along with their subsidiary Marconi/EMI.
In Berlin an incredible survivor is found in the stores of the old East German Postal Service - the Einheits receiver. Launched in 1939 and intended for the propaganda control of the German people, this is the worlds first set with a square screen.
In Dresden, in a very rare interview, Germany’s great television pioneer Professor Manfred Von Ardenne describes his meetings with JL Baird, and his chilling encounter with Adolf Hitler during the 1936 Olympics.
First screened in 1994 for BBC Scotland Ex-S Arts strand, before being screened in Germany, Australia, NZ, Spain, Italy and Canada. The film is often used as a primary source in classes being taught the history of television.

A brilliant comic actor Terry Scott was one of the most familiar faces on British television in the 1960s and 70s. At the height of his popularity his classic comedy series, Terry and June, (in which he co-starred with June Whitfield) was watched by 15 million viewers weekly.
Born Owen John Scott in Watford he began his theatrical career in his teens at the Watford Amateur Dramatic Society playing small comic roles. During the Second World War he served in the Royal Navy and in 1945 he used his demobilisation gratuity to enter show-business as a manager of seaside shows around Britain.
In 1949 he was contracted by the BBC to appear on a radio show with comic Bob Monkhouse which was not successful. Later he teamed up with another comic Bill Maynard which led to the popular TV series Great Scott, It's Maynard.
On stage in the late 50s he worked in farces with comedians such as Brian Rix before going on to star in another popular TV comedy Hugh and I (with Hugh Lloyd) which regularly topped the ratings during the 60s. In 1969 he joined up with comic actress June Whitfield in the series Happy Ever After which later evolved into Terry and June and ran for a record breaking 14 years. In 1978 the Scott and Whitfield were named by the Variety Club of Great Britain as Join Personalities of the Year.
On the London stage he starred he proved hugely popular in shows such as A Bed Full of Foreigners, The Mating Game and Run For Your Wife which he also toured in the Middle East. He was also one of Britain's most famous pantomime 'dames'.
Scott was dogged by ill-health for many years and in 1979 his life was saved by a four hour brain operation after a haemorrage. By 1985 he was suffering from creeping paralysis and often had to wear a neck brace on stage and TV. When his TV series Terry and June was axed in 1988 he suffered a nervous breakdown partly brought on by his public confession that he had indulged in a series of affairs during his marriage to former dancer Margaret Peden (whom he wed in 1957) and that he was suffering from cancer.
