Iceland: The Highlands and Islands

Iceland Part One of our 3-week adventure around the country. This movie includes the highlands and islands of Iceland. We camped 2 nights at Landmannalaugar. The first day we hiked our own trek up the valley (from the campground). The second day we woke up early to climb Mount Bláhnúkur. It's a switchback, steep (but short) hike with sweeping views of lava fields and rolling sandstone mountains. After the hike we dipped into the natural hot spring located directly in the campground ( The second half of the movie shows highlights of Vestmannaeyjar (the Westman Islands). Only a short ferry ride from Landeyjahöfn in the south, this was one of our favorite places on Iceland explored. We arrived in the small, quiet fishing town of Vestmannaeyjabær. It was a short walk up the main road to Herjólfsdalur (old viking homes in a Glamping & Camping park). They are located in a bowl of green grass walls under Blatindur. There are two very steep sheep trails visibly seen that will take you to the top of the ridge (The Herjólfsdalur Ridge Trek). We chose the western-most trail of switchbacks as the northern-most was directly straight up and looked eroded. At the top of the ridge are views of endless ocean, more Westman Islands, and Iceland mainland. Similar to the West Fjords (video coming soon), this was one of the most vibrant green hikes we experienced in Iceland.
