The Cave Temple at Kottukal, Kollam
A rare entity among the temple architecture of Kerala, cave temples is few and arouse great curiosity. The one at Ittiva at Chadayamangalam in Kollam district is one such temple, virtually carved out from a gigantic piece of rock, lying in the middle of a paddy field. From a distance this architectural wonder gives the impression of a sleeping elephant.
This rock cut temple represents the vibes of an ancient culture and also the traditional artistic excellence prevalent at that time. The temple known as Kottukal Kal Thrikovil Cave Temple has two square rooms with the main deity of Lord Ganapathy in between. The other deities include Lord Siva in the form of Siva Lingam, Hanuman and Nandikeswara. A Mandapam (roof) in front of one of the rooms stands testimony to the skill of those who build this temple from a single piece of rock. The temple premise also has a well that never dries up.

It is situated in the village of Kotthukkal, near Anchal, Kollam district, Kerala, India. The name Kothukkal (which means Kothiya Kallu- carved rock) is a reference to rock cut shrine. There are two caves of unequal size, both facing the east with the sculpture of main deity Ganapathy in between.[1] The smaller cave has an idol of Hanuman and the larger one has a monolithic Nandi (bull) in it. Lord Shiva is also a deity in the temple in the form of a Shiva Ling.
According to local traditions, the big rock was brought to the area by the incarnations of Shiva including Nandi to the area, and another small rock near to it called 'chummaadu para' is believed to be the support to relieve the pain when the bigger hard rock kept in head. Historians read its origin back to the 7th century AD when 'Nedila Paranthaka Nedumchadayan' who ruled Chadayamangalam the nearby place, made the rock cut temple. It is now situated in the centre of a large extent of paddy fields and daily rituals are done under Travancore Devaswom Board. The calmness and tranquility of the area attracts the travellers, and one can reach the spot travelling 45 kilometers from Kollam.

ഗുഹാ ക്ഷേത്രങ്ങൾ എന്ന് കേൾക്കുമ്പോൾ അജന്തയും എല്ലോറയുമൊക്കെയാണ് നമ്മുടെ മനസിൽ വരുന്നത്. എന്നാൽ കേരളത്തിലും നിരവധി ഗുഹാക്ഷേത്രങ്ങളുണ്ട്. അതിൽ പ്രശസ്തമായ ഒരു ഗുഹാക്ഷേത്രമാണ് കോട്ടുക്കൽ ഗുഹാ ക്ഷേത്രം. പ്രാചീനമായ ഈ ക്ഷേത്രം എപ്പോഴാണ് നിർമ്മിച്ചതെന്നോ ആരാണ് നിർമ്മിച്ചതെന്നൊ ഉള്ള കാര്യങ്ങൾ അത്ര വ്യക്തമല്ല. കൊല്ലം ജില്ലയിലെ ഇട്ടിവ ഗ്രാമപഞ്ചായത്തിൽ, കോട്ടുക്കൽ എന്ന സ്ഥലത്താണ് ഈ ഗുഹ ക്ഷേത്രം സ്ഥിതി ചെയ്യുന്നത്. ഒറ്റ കല്ലിൽ തീർത്ത ക്ഷേത്രമാണ് ഇത്. അകലെ നിന്ന് കണ്ടാൽ ഒരു ആന കിടക്കുന്നതായേ തോന്നു. കോട്ടുക്കൽ ഗുഹാ ക്ഷേത്രം, കൽത്തിരി കോവിൽ തുടങ്ങിയ പേരുകളിലാണ് ഈ ക്ഷേത്രം അറിയപ്പെടുന്നത്. കോട്ടുക്കൽ എന്ന സ്ഥലനാമത്തിനു പിന്നിലും കോട്ടിയ കല്ല് എന്നർത്ഥം വരുന്ന ഈ ക്ഷേത്രം തന്നെയാണ്. കേരളസർക്കാരിന്റെ സംരക്ഷണയിലാണ് കോട്ടുക്കൽ ഗുഹ ക്ഷേത്രമുള്ളത്.
ഇനി ഈ ക്ഷേത്രത്തെ ചുറ്റിപ്പറ്റിയുള്ള രണ്ട് ഐതിഹ്യങ്ങൾ പറയാം; ശിവന്റെ ഭൂതഗണങ്ങൾ ചുമന്നുകൊണ്ടുവന്ന പാറയാണ് ഇതെന്നാണ് ഒരു കഥ, ശിവഭക്തനായ സന്യാസിക്ക് ഒരിക്കൽ സ്വപ്നദർശനം ലഭിച്ചു. അതെ തുടർന്ന് അദ്ദേഹമാണ് ഈ ക്ഷേത്രം നിർമ്മിച്ചതെന്നും പറയപ്പെടുന്നുണ്ട്. ഒരിക്കൽ ശിവഭക്തരായ രണ്ട് ദേവതകൾ ക്ഷേത്രസ്ഥാപനം നടത്തുവാനായി ആകാശത്തിലൂടെ സഞ്ചരിക്കുകയായിരുന്നു. അങ്ങനെ അവർ ഇന്ന് ഈ ക്ഷേത്രം സ്ഥിതിചെയ്യുന്ന സ്ഥലത്തെത്തിയപ്പോൾ കോഴികൂവുന്നതു കേട്ടു. അത് കേട്ടതും, സൂര്യോദയം ആണെന്നുകരുതി, അവർ ആ ക്ഷേത്രം ഇവിടെ സ്ഥാപിക്കുകയും ചെയ്തു എന്നതാണ് മറ്റൊരു ഐതിഹ്യം.
ക്ഷേത്രത്തിന്റെ പ്രത്യേകതകളിലേക്ക്: ശിവനാണ് ക്ഷേത്രത്തിലെ പ്രധാന പ്രതിഷ്ഠ. പത്തടി നീളവും എട്ടടി വീതിയുമുള്ള രണ്ട് മുറികളിലായി, രണ്ട് ശിവലിംഗങ്ങളോട് കൂടിയതാണ് ഈ ക്ഷേത്രം. ഓരോ മുറിക്കും പുറത്തായി ഗണപതിയും നന്ദികേശനും ഹനുമാനുമുണ്ട്. ഇത്തരത്തിലുള്ള ഈ രണ്ടു മുറികളെയും ഒരു ശിവ ക്ഷേത്രങ്ങളായാണ് കണക്കാക്കുന്നത്. യഥാർത്ഥത്തിൽ ഒരു കമാനത്തിനു കീഴിൽ ഒരു പൂർണ ക്ഷേത്രമേ ഉണ്ടാകാവു എന്നുണ്ട്. എന്നാൽ ഇവിടെ രണ്ടു [പൂർണ്ണ ശിവ ക്ഷേത്രങ്ങളാണ് ഒരു കാമനത്തിനു കീഴിലുള്ളത്. ഇതിനെ ദ്വൈത ക്ഷേത്രം എന്നാണു പറയുന്നത്. ഇന്ത്യയിലെ തന്നെ ഒരൊറ്റ ദ്വൈത ക്ഷേത്രമാണ് ഇത്. ക്ഷേത്രത്തിനു മുൻപിലായി ഏതു വേനലിലും വറ്റാത്തൊരു കുളമുണ്ട്. കൂടാതെ ഒരു കല്മണ്ഡപവും ഉണ്ട്. തിരുവിതാംകൂർ ദേവസ്വം ബോർഡിൻറെ മേൽനോട്ടത്തിലാണ് ക്ഷേത്രത്തിലെ പൂജകൾ നടക്കുന്നത്. കുംഭമാസത്തിലെ ശിവരാത്രി ദിവസമാണ് ക്ഷേത്രത്തിലെ ഉത്സവമായി ആഘോഷിക്കുന്നത്.
എം സി റോഡിന്റെ വടക്ക് ഭാഗത്ത് നിന്നും വരുന്നവർക്ക്, ആയൂർ നിന്നും 5 കിലോമീറ്റർ കിഴക്ക് ഭാഗത്തേക്ക് സഞ്ചരിച്ചാൽ ഈ ക്ഷേത്രത്തിലെത്താം. തിരുവനന്തപുരത്ത് നിന്നും വരുന്നവർക്ക് നിലമേൽ, കടയ്ക്കൽ വഴി കോട്ടുകൽ ക്ഷേത്രത്തിൽ എത്തിച്ചേരാനാകും.
