Martin Koenig has documented Bulgarians from around the country in their traditional costumes and in their everyday lives. The body of photographic work, which will be on display at the Chicago Cultural Center from July 11, 2008, was produced from 1966 to 1979 during Martin's travels throughout rural Bulgaria and some of the neighboring countries. It was first shown in its entirety in a large exhibition at the National Art Gallery in Sofia in 2005.

Bulgaria is situated in the Balkans. It borders Romania to the north , Serbia and FYROM to the west, and Greece and Turkey to the south.

Sofia is the capital and largest city of Bulgaria. It is located in the western part of country at the foot of the mountain Vitosha, and is the administrative, cultural, and industrial center of the country. Sofia got its present name in the 14th century after the name of St.Sofia Church, which means wisdom in Greek. On 3rd April 1879 the town became a capital.Sofia was originally a Thracian settlement called Serdica, named after the Thracian tribe of Serdi. The city was destroyed by the Huns in 447, but rebuilt by Byzantine Emperor Justinian I and renamed Triaditsa. Sofia was captured by the Bulgarians for the first time in 809. Afterwards, it was known as Sredets, the name given to it by the Slavs. It was renamed Sofia in 1376 and conquered by the Ottomans in 1382, becoming the capital of the Turkish province of Rumelia for more than 4 centuries.
Veliko Tarnovo, a former capital of Bulgaria, is one of the most ancient cities in Bulgaria. Its history dates back to the 4th millennia BC. Veliko Tarnovo is famous for its remarkable architectural monuments, miniatures, mural paintings, literature, arts and crafts.
Plovdiv, the second largest city in Bulgaria, is located in the Thracian Plain in Southern Bulgaria at 150km distance from Sofia. Plovdiv was built on seven hills along the Maritsa River, and its ancient history lend the city a characteristic charm. Also It's the best city for people who love shopping!
Nessebar. Situated on a beautiful peninsula and prominent with its numerous family churches from the time of the Second Bulgarian Kingdom 11th - 14th c., Nessebar is small fishermen's town today. The Old Town with its narrow cobbled streets and the distinctive architecture of the typical Nessebar Renaissance houses has a unique atmosphere that attracts tourists from all over the world.

The folk dance ensemble “Chavdar” was established in 1946, and already two years later, under the direction of Stoyan Bogdanov and Alexandar Kadiyski, it won a gold medal in the 1st Bulgarian Festival of Amateur Art. Since 1979, the ensemble has been led by Boris Ganchev, and its repertoire includes more than 20 dances from different regions of Bulgaria. Taking inspiration from Bulgarian folk traditions, the dances performed by the group are created by the leading Bulgarian choreographers. During its existence, “Chavdar” has participated in many national and international competitions and festivals, it has also gone on several concert tours, bringing joy to people around the world and taking numerous prizes back home.

At 5.30 p.m. Kuldīga County invites everyone to dance together with the festival participants at the event “Everybody dances “Sudmaliņas”” on one of the symbols of Kuldīga – the 19th century brick vault bridge.
At 6 p.m. a concert “Dance up a Storm” will be held in Kuldīga Town Garden, where the audience will be able to enjoy various dance group programmes. Participants: Chavdar(Bulgaria), Djido (Serbia), Folk Dance Ensemble of the Austral University of Chile, Folk Dance Ensemble of Sahashra Performing Arts Centre (India), Podmoskovnie vechera (Russia), “Venta”, and “Vektors” (Latvia).

ソフィアで宿泊しているマリネラホテル。1980年代共産党支配化に建てられたホテルです。前述したとおり、日本の御三家ホテル・ニューオータニが建てたものです。設計は建築家の黒川紀章です。
10年少し前にドイツの0会社にわたり、今は他の別会社が経営してますが、現地の人々から日本ホテルと呼ばれ親しまれてます。
5つ星のホテルで、日本庭園等日本に関連したものも多く残っております。

A different kind of exhibition with unusual presentation changed the foyer of the National Radio on the 13th of February 2012 with its presence there and welcomed its guests in a special way for its consecutive opening. The culprit for this beautiful and really Bulgarian holiday is the artist Pavlin Petrov. His traveling exhibition The Glagolitic Alphabet and Proto -- Bulgarian Runes is touring the country under the banner of The Arts and Crafts Development Association -- 7 /A.R.I.Z. -- 7/ four years already and highlights almost unknown but extremely important page of our own history. The evening started with the special participation of the soldiers from the Proto -- Bulgarian School for survival BagaTur -- Sofia, who accompanied the emergence of the artist, disguised as an ancient Bulgarian Khan. His garment is made by Mrietta Nedkova, talented receiver of the crafts traditions of her family, who knows and practices five different crafts. The quartet Ranina, a part of the Ensemble for folk songs and dances Philip Kutev and the representative choir of the cultural center, named Slavic talk, more known as the Choir of Mr. Bukorishliev, complemented the warm and intimate emotion of the evening. On behalf of the hosts the guests and the artist were greeted by Radomira Mihova -- Head of the Advertising -- publishing house of BNR. As a sign of respect the author gave away one of his pictures with the monogram of Khan Asparuh to the hosts in the face of the Bulgarian national radio /BNR/. The upcoming creative plans of the artist Pavlin Petrov were revealed to the visitors by his art manager Daniela Kapincheva and the exhibition was officially opened by the Vice President of A.R.I.Z. -- 7 -- Chef Penyo Ivanov. The compere of the evening was the journalist Raina Mandzhukova. The cocktail, accompanied the opening, was prepared by Rai Catering Company and the dairy products for it were provided by the Rodopeya Company.
BLD - New Office Space Project in the Heart of Sofia
BLD Office Park* will be class A contemporary office complex of five buildings, comprising 23,500 sq m office space and 3,500 sq m. retail area together with 182 underground and 58 above-ground parking spaces. BLD and its joint venture partner Northridge Capital Ltd., London acquired five out of the eight buildings of Dimitar Blagoev Printing House, spread upon approximately 50,000 sq m on an island site surrounded by four streets.

Who is behind BLD: Mr. Christo Iliev is a founder and CEO of Bulgarian Land Development (BLD) an independent company incorporated to act as a residential and commercial property developer in Bulgaria. The company listed on the AIM market of LSE in March 2006.

APRILTSI, BULGARIA
Apriltsi is the administrative center of Apriltsi municipality in Lovech region. The town is situated at an altitude of 550 meters at the foot of Botev Peak in Balkan mountain, on the riverside of Vidima. The climate is characterized by cool summers and cold winters with persistent snow cover. The most valuable thing in Apriltsi is the gorgeous and well-kept nature. The nearest to mountain peaks Ostrets, Maragidik and Botev, the green slopes, the solar valley in the heart of the mountain makes it a favorite place for vacations. From Apriltsi is easy to get to the Central Balkan National Park, whose boundary passes through the municipality. You can see in this movie the suburb of Apriltsi - Ostrets, the Museum of national crafts and applied arts, the Troyan Monastery - the third largest monastery in Bulgaria, Natural Museum in the village of Cherni Osam and pictures of the peak Maragidik, which mystery had been revealed by the author of the movie -- Nikola Nikolov. Maragidik is a monument of the Egyptian pharaoh Hatshepsut Maatkara acted the part of the Goddess Bast. Maragidik is the biggest monument in the world.

The town of Kotel (population 7270 inhabitants) is situated in a picturesque small valley in the eastern part of the Balkan Range, 527 m above the sea level. It is 328 km east of Sofia, 49km northeast of Sliven.
Kotel is not only a place with majestic nature, fresh air, and pure mountain water, but also an important cultural and historical center. It is called the Stronghold of Bulgarian spirit, Cradle of the Bulgarian Renaissance. The town is a native place of a number of eminent National Revival figures: Georgi Sava Rakovski (one of the main ideologist of the movement for national liberation), the Renaissance men of letters Neophyte Bozvelli, dr. Petar Beron, Sofroni Vrachanski, the socially active men Gavril Krastevich, Aleko Bogoridi, Stefan Bogoridy and many others.
Kotel is a town with beautiful architectonic models from the late Revival and one of the most important centers of weaving art. Its rich history, Renaissance architecture, and marvelous vicinity make this picturesque Balkan town a desired place for national and international tourism.
HISTORY
A Turkish register of 1486 contains the earliest information about the town known then as Kazan Panaru. At the beginning of the Ottoman rule Kotel was inhabited by the so called dervendgis (they used to guard the passes in the Balkan) and dgelepis (traders of cattle, sheep). Long term contracts for cloth deliveries to the Ottoman army had provided relative independence of the town. That, as well as the economic growth in 18 – 19 century, contracts for trade, the Orthodox passion of the inhabitants of Kotel contributed to the transformation of the town into a centre of Bulgarian culture and education, of the struggle for church independence and national freedom.
In 1812 the first Bulgarian secular elite school was open there.
After the liberation in 1894 Kotel suffered devastating fire that devoured 4/5ths of the town. Only the suburb called Galata survived and today it renders an approximate idea of what the old town looked like.
LANDMARKS
The town of Kotel has been declared an architectural and historical reserve. There have been preserved over 110 Renaissance houses.
There is a museum exposition of brilliant fabrics – symbol of the ancient craft of carpet weaving in the Galatan School.
The house of Kyorpev's is an ethnographic museum.
The Museum of Renaissance illustrates the life of more than 200 national heroes from the region.
The Museum of Nature and Science shows the natural variety of the area.
The “St. Trinity” and “St. St. Apostles Peter and Paul” church preserve beautiful woodcarvings.
There is high musical folk school Filip Kutev in Kotel.
SURROUNDING AREAS
The village of Zheravna is 14 km south of Kotel. Every building in the village is an unique monument of culture.
The village of Medven is 12 km southeast of Kotel. There are more than 120 cultural monuments dating back to the renaissance epoch. The village of Katunishte is 15 km southeast of the town. 80 buildings there have been declared cultural monuments. The town of Gradetz is situated 17 km southeast of Kotel. It is rich in architectural monuments. Some 7 km away is the antique dividing wall at Zhelezni Vrati.
There are more than 30 caves that have already been investigated in the region of Kotel. Most interesting are: Ledenika, Dryanovska, Kurvavata lokva, Rakovski.
Martenitsa flashmob in Copenhagen
On the 1st of March Tuk-Tam Copenhagen together with Dilmana folk dance group gave martenitsas to people in the center of Copenhagen in order to celebrate the end of the winter and the beginning of the spring. Martenitsa is a tradition in Bulgarian and other Balkan countries, where people give each other a martenitsa and wish each other health and happiness during the year.
