Lessons Learned: The Firebombing of Tokyo
On March 9, 1945, B-29 bombers in the U.S. Air Force began dropping incendiary bombs on the city of Tokyo. This raid, known as Operation Meetinghouse, caused incredible destruction, killing perhaps 100,000 people and burning out fifteen square miles of the city. Incendiary bombings continued in the months to come, targeting other Japanese cities and killing hundreds of thousands of Japanese civilians.
James M. Lindsay, CFR's senior vice president and director of studies, says the firebombing of Tokyo should remind us of the destructive power of conventional weapons. During the war, he points out, conventional bombings accounted for far more civilian deaths in Japan than did the nuclear weapons dropped on Hiroshima and Nagasaki. He argues that more recent conflicts, from the Rwandan genocide to fighting in Iraq, continue to illustrate the destructive power of conventional arsenals.

Last Surviving Member of Doolittle’s Raiders speaks at 75th Anniversary of Pearl Harbor Attack Event
The Harry S. Truman Center for Governmental Affairs hosted Last Surviving Member of Doolittle’s Raiders to Speak at 75th Anniversary of Pearl Harbor Attack Event: Lt. Col. Richard Cole on Wednesday, December 7, the 75th anniversary of the attack on Pearl Harbor, the National World War I Museum and Memorial, in collaboration with the UMKC Truman Center, Park University, the National Archives at Kansas City, and the Truman Presidential Library and Museum, co-hosted Lt. Col. Richard “Dick” Cole, 101 years old and the last surviving member of the Doolittle Tokyo Raiders, for a conversation on the significance of the air response that changed the course of World War II. The discussion, titled Before 9/11, there was a 12/7: Reflections of Doolittle Raider Dick Cole on World War II, was held at the National World War I Museum and Memorial.
Cole was joined on the stage by Dennis Okerstrom, Ph.D., Park University professor of English and the author of Dick Cole’s War: Doolittle Raider, Hump Pilot Air Commando. Okerstrom presented a brief history of the attack on Pearl Harbor and the U.S. response before introducing Cole, who served as co-pilot to Lt. Col. Jimmy Doolittle in the first B-25 to take off from the USS Hornet on April 18, 1942, in the U.S. air raid on Tokyo. Cole discussed his wartime experiences and answered questions from the audience, moderated by Okerstrom. Despite the raid on Tokyo resulting in relatively minor damage to the Japanese city, Cole and all of the members of Doolittle Raiders, in recognition of the tremendous boost their mission gave to American morale in World War II, were awarded the Congressional Gold Medal in May 2014 “for outstanding heroism, valor, skill and service to the United States in conducting their bombings of Tokyo.” The raid is credited by many historians as the critical factor of the Japanese defeat at the Battle of Midway, often cited as the turning point in the Pacific war.

Japanese Bomb USA - Bombing of Pearl Harbor, World War II Stock Footage 20550 HD
This short newsreel, produced for the home market, expresses deep outrage at the Japanese bombing of Pearl Harbor, Hawaii. Due to classification issues at the time the film was made, very little of the damage to Pearl Harbor itself is shown; rather the film focuses on damage to civilian areas of Waikiki and Honolulu. Footage includes: Emporer Hirohito reviewing his troops, Secretary of State Cordell Hull speaking with Japanese ambassadors, Waikiki during bombing attack, emergency hospitals during the Pearl Harbor attack, refugee center at University of Hawaii, a Japanese miniature submarine is seen beached, and President Roosevelt declares war. There is a lot of U.S. Navy footage in the film as well, including submarines, battleships, and other vessels. The USS Phelps (DD-360) is briefly seen during fleet maneuvers.

Bombing of Tokyo (東京大空襲, Tōkyōdaikūshū), often referred to as a series of firebombing raids, was conducted as part of the air raids on Japan by the United States Army Air Forces during the Pacific campaigns of World War II. The U.S. mounted a small-scale raid on Tokyo in April 1942. Strategic bombing and urban area bombing began in 1944 after the long-range B-29 Superfortress bomber entered service, first deployed from China and thereafter the Mariana Islands. B-29 raids from those islands began on 17 November 1944 and lasted until 15 August 1945, the day Japan capitulated. The Operation Meetinghouse air raid of 9–10 March 1945 was later estimated to be the single most destructive bombing raid in history.

During the final stage of World War II, the United States detonated two nuclear weapons over the Japanese cities of Hiroshima and Nagasaki on August 6 and 9, 1945, respectively, with the consent of the United Kingdom, as required by the Quebec Agreement. The two bombings killed 129,000–226,000 people, most of whom were civilians, and remain the only use of nuclear weapons in the history of armed conflict.
In the final year of the war, the Allies prepared for what was anticipated to be a very costly invasion of the Japanese mainland. This undertaking was preceded by a conventional and firebombing campaign that devastated 67 Japanese cities. The war in Europe had concluded when Germany signed its instrument of surrender on May 8, 1945. As the Allies turned their full attention to the Pacific theater, Japan faced the same fate. The Allies called for the unconditional surrender of the Imperial Japanese armed forces in the Potsdam Declaration on July 26, 1945—the alternative being prompt and utter destruction. Japan ignored the ultimatum and the war continued.
By August 1945, the Allies' Manhattan Project had produced two types of atomic bombs, and the 509th Composite Group of the United States Army Air Forces (USAAF) was equipped with the specialized Silverplate version of the Boeing B-29 Superfortress that could deliver them from Tinian in the Mariana Islands. Orders for atomic bombs to be used on four Japanese cities were issued on July 25. On August 6, one of the modified B-29s dropped a uranium gun-type (Little Boy) bomb on Hiroshima. Three days later, on August 9, a plutonium implosion (Fat Man) bomb was dropped by another B-29 on Nagasaki. The bombs immediately devastated their targets. Over the next two to four months, the acute effects of the atomic bombings killed 90,000–146,000 people in Hiroshima and 39,000–80,000 people in Nagasaki; roughly half of the deaths in each city occurred on the first day. Large numbers of people continued to die from the effects of burns, radiation sickness, and other injuries, compounded by illness and malnutrition, for many months afterward. In both cities, most of the dead were civilians, although Hiroshima had a sizable military garrison.
On August 15—six days after the bombing of Nagasaki and the Soviet Union's declaration of war—Japan announced its surrender to the Allies. On September 2 in Tokyo Bay, the Japanese government signed the instrument of surrender, which effectively ended World War II. The effects of ...

This short and apparently hastily assembled newsreel shows the events of December 7th, 1941 and expresses deep outrage at the Japanese bombing of Pearl Harbor, Hawaii. Due to classification issues at the time the film was made, very little of the damage to Pearl Harbor itself is shown; rather the film focuses on damage to civilian areas of Waikiki and Honolulu. Due to the lack of material available there are some laughable errors in the rather earnest film, including the presence of a plane with British markings around the 1:40 timecode mark. Other footage includes: Emporer Hirohito reviewing his troops, Secretary of State Cordell Hull speaking with Japanese ambassadors, Waikiki during bombing attack, emergency hospitals during the Pearl Harbor attack, refugee center at University of Hawaii, a Japanese miniature submarine is seen beached, and President Roosevelt declares war. There is a lot of U.S. Navy footage in the film as well, including submarines, battleships, and other vessels. The USS Phelps (DD-360) is briefly seen during fleet maneuvers.
